I've heard 'accommodation' is the most commonly misspelled word in the English language. I don't seem to have much trouble with that one. 'Kindergarten' is one I always spell as if it's full of plants, 'kindergarden'. I don't know why (I swallowed the fly).
Spelling was always my forte in elementary school. I could even beat the uber-preppy, academically talented white girls at spelling. Then I watched Spellbound and realized I am only average at best. Those kids in that movie are asked to spell some crazy words, and I'm convinced many of those words were made up on the spot.

Mnemonic device for that one: "there is a rat in separate." I've got a boatload of them. They're dorky but they can be tremendously helpful.

As I've gotten older, I find that I can spell more and more words without having to look them up; a nice little benefit. One of my holdouts, however, is the word "maintenance." Years ago, I wanted to always spell it like an extention of the word "maintain," like "maintainence." But these days, I can't tell if it should be "-nance" or "-nence"

All I know is that if I see one more person spell ridiculous (root: ridicule) as rediculous (as in: something is 'diculous' again?) I will vomit in terror.

Wait, are you telling Cult_of_frank to not vomit, or me to not write(sic) on myself. I'm confused.

Of the five words that I misspelled on spelling tests when in school, the one that I still struggle with occasionally is "plural." For some reason, my brain always wants to make it "plurar."
For the record, the others were squirrel (grade 2), jewellery (grade 2, although I still dispute this because I used the accepted alternate spelling "jewelry"), guess (grade 3) and Isaiah (grade 7). |

I remember this one arcade videogame, the one with the pair of uzi submachine guns mounted in front of the screen? Every time you died, it said "Your Dead." And I thought, "My dead what??"

I've been spelling the name Michael wrong for virtually my entire life.
I'm 28 and it was only a few months ago that I happened to notice that it's not spelled Micheal. |

Haha. This guy I know named Michael spent years telling people that Michael was spelled like the word "ale" as in "Ginger ale". When he told my brother this, my brother said, "Ale isn't spelled A-E-L". Michael was convinced it was, so when they went to the Canada Dry website and he saw ALE, Michael's head exploded. No wonder people had been spelling his name Michale for so long.

For some reason, if I'm typing quickly(for me) I leave the y off of they. As in "What did the do"? Obviously, I know how to spell "they" but I do this fairly often. Quite annoying. |

Don't feel bad, I spell Michael wrong all the time. And it's MY NAME. Whenever I have to write it down, I pull out my ID, just to make sure. I can never remember if it's ael or eal. |

Jesus, are these prats going to come in and kill every thread on the forum? On topic, I could never spell the name John. I always used to put Jhon. I'm just glad it's not my name, or i'd be screwed.

I've never seen it spelled any way other than "jewelry" here in the States. Must be a crazy British/Canadian spelling.

i absolutely hate it when people spell "a lot" as "alot". there's a lot of space between "a" and "lot".
also, it's [notice i didn't spell "its"] not "alright", it's "all right", but no one cares, and now it is acceptable to spell it "alright".
words that end in "-ence" or "-ance" always get me.
