I was having a dream that I was in a room with all sorts of rodent-esque creatures scurrying about, and I was wondering if there were any larger forms of life in the room. Suddenly, I wake up to a voice saying "hello" and this really tall, green semi-elephant man walked into my room and stood there. I stayed completely still, my mouth agap, freaked the fuck out for a good 10 seconds. And the bizarre creature no longer moved, but I could see his face just staring at me. Finally, I lifted my head up from my pillow and realized that the semi-elephant man was in fact a green shirt that I had hanging on the door to my bedroom. When I look at it now I can still see how I turned it into a face.
I could have sworn I heard it say "hello" and walk in the door, but you know... What crazy things have you seen when you haven't quite woken up yet?

I dreamt I had full sleeve tattoos done last night. Totally vivid right down to the sound, pain and itching afterwards. I actually checked the sheets for ink and blood when I woke up.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but, rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming "Fuck, what a trip!" |

In college one time, I dreamt of the apocalypse. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen in the movies. It was dreadful: rubble everywhere, it was difficult to breathe from all the dust in the air, men tearing each other's skin off during a fistfight, people living like cavemen, killing each other over food and water, little cabals constantly sprung up and fought with other groups, clawing for control of the chaos. It was the worst thing I'd ever experienced.
When I woke up, I was in a major funk for a couple days. My girlfriend at the time finally got fed up with me and said, "Oh get over it, it was just a dream."
So I did, and I haven't been able to remember a dream that vividly since. That was 15 years ago.

when I was a lot younger (13 or 14, probably) I had my most visceral dream experience to date... It started off as a "blank screen", all I could see was black but I heard a woman's voice. She had been brutally murdered, and was relating the exact events of her death in a really eerie, displaced kind of voice. All of a sudden, I saw this ghastly visage flash before my eyes (if you've seen the Exorcist, it was basically that weird pale demon face with the drawn lips and wide eyes that flashes for a brief brief instant once or twice during the movie) and simultaneously this deafening sound reverberated--i'm not exaggerating when I say that it was like someone took a trumpet to one of my ears and blew a shrieking note on it as loud as they could.
I fell OUT of my bed, clutching my ears, freaking out like shit. For about 20 or 30 seconds after that, I could still hear the reverberation of that sound in my ears, even though I was completely awake.
Almost gave me a frickin' heart attack |

Wow, that's insane. I've never had anything like these experiences, except for the shirt one. I was asleep in a strange room in Greece and very young (like six or seven). In the dream, someone had come into the room with unknown but definitely malicious intent. I could see his silhouette (no face, but I assumed it was a man) and he had no idea I knew he was there, I didn't even know if he'd seen me. I was laying still, scared to death and somehow or somewhere in there woke up without realizing I had woken up. The man's silhouette was still there. It stood unmoving as I laid there. For a really long time. Like 10, 20, maybe 30 mins. By now I realized my mind must be playing tricks on me but was still really scared. I decided I couldn't lay like this forever, so I called out "mom?". Nothing. Whoever it was now knew I was there? I called again, more shakily, but nothing.
I had to run for it. I jumped out of bed and sprinted for the door, hit the lights. Of course it was a trenchcoat hung on a coat tree, there was also a hat or something on top of it.
It was quite freaky at the time. Now it's mostly funny.

I'm not sure about telling this, but here goes.
Penis falling off. Laugh if you will but it was really upsetting. The thing is that this was a recurring dream. The head would fall off but everytime I would spit on it and somehow be able to stick it back. Once, however, this no longer worked and I came to the realization that my luck in miracle healing throughout the previous dreams had come to an end and that now i would eternally have a penis with no head. This was the only time I was woken up by the sound of my own scream. And from then on I never dreamt this again. |

I get ocular migraines. (It's pretty common, I guess.)
I lose my peripheral vision. Little shimmery blobs block most of the rest of what I can see.
Sometimes I wake up to them.

My mother recently died. I dream about her quite a bit.
Dreamt that we were sitting in the room we held her 'visitation' thing. We were chatting. She sat in her coffin, seeming very alive, and told me about being dead. She said she'd like for me to meet someone and took my hand. Everything went black and I started to panic.
Woke up. Couldn't see anything 'cosa the migraine. Thought I'd gone to hell.

Felt guilty afterwards.

I had a dream that I went into my flat and my mum was in the bath taking pill after pill after pill, washing it down with bacardi, I said "mum what are you doing?" she told me she was too tired and would I please leave her to do this, so I walked away and came back some time later and found her in the bath still, blue and floating. I woke up and phoned the poor woman at 5am to make sure she was ok. I used to dream after my parents divorce that I lived in a village in the woods, on olde worlde style village, and my dad disappeared one day and weeks later, playing in the woods I'd trip over his half buried yellowed corpse. I hate dreams.

Good grief. I've never had anything scary like that.
However, I quite regularly get up to go to the loo in the night, feel my way around my bedroom to wear I absolutely know the door is, only to fully wake up and find myself climbing into my wardrobe.

last night I had a dream it was a touch fuzzy though, I was running away from something along a wet rainy alleyway, as I ran I went over on my ankle and it snapped, I looked down and there was bone pushing through skin, that woke me up. I drifted off again after and had these mini dreams of someone trying to get into my flat, ringing the doorbell then banging hard on the door then kicking the door so the wood around the hinges splintered. I gave up sleeping after that, and pottered around for a bit.
You may mock, but I mean it, I hate dreams. Rarely very nice.

There was one morning I woke up to a symphony on the radio, which will happen if you listen to Brave New Waves at night on CBC. I reached over to turn it off, but the radio wasn't on.
It did fade away after four or five seconds. I assume it's a piece I'm writing no one will want to hear ('Just sing, a song, make it simple to last your whole life long...'). |
