I like it. They don't sound so much like Jesus And The Mary Chain now. I like Jesus And The Mary Chain but I thought they needed to move on from that sound 'cos they ripped them off so much. They now sound more like a 50's girl group who's band have discovered distortion.
Which is nice.

Stephen Malkmus
"Face the Truth"
It's about time the man makes an album where everyone song is unique, interesting and fun. I mean, I have several songs going through my head when I'm not even listening to it. "Crooked Rain Crooked Rain" and "Wowee Zowee" of Pavement had the same vibe. I thought the rest of Pavement's albums were 1/10th good and S.Malkmus and the Jinks were total crap.
This album has it all. Sloppiness, out-of-tune, the clashes of chords... It's something people either "get" or "not get" as if it were a joke, or a mockery of modern music. The thing is, this guy knows what he's doing.
Writing a quick review makes me feel like I'm doing a book review of "Reading Rainbow" PBS

the Jicks record is by far the best released album of '05 so far to me. for my birthday i got an EXCELLENT comp called "Wheedle's Groove" which is collection of Seattle funk/soul from the mid 60s/70s. It's phenomenal. I also got "C'mon" by Town and Country, which i've yet to listen to, and the Complete Robert Johnson recordings.

I like the new Malkmus album, but I really don't find it a thousand times better than Pig Lib or anything (I generally liked Pig Lib a lot). I have only a half dozen listens to it, so we'll see. It definitely has some very good moments to it, and a few that are a little average, or not fully crafted, kind of like he had a good idea for a song but then didn't fully work it out (imo). His guitar playing gets me...I have always loved the sound he gets whether it is on this album or Pig Lib or Pavement or Silver Jews. The guy just comes up with great sounds and great catchy hooks.

I'm so fucking gutted today I'll go to the record store at lunch time and by a SHITLOAD of records and I don't give a fuck if I'm ruined.
Except it's a shitty store and I never find anything in there and I'll probably come back with empty hands. Self-pity thread, here I come!

I'm guessing they're Cut The Crap-era. I've never heard that, it seems a little bit dodgy!
By the way, Kathryn, yeah, I finally caught up!! Of course, I'll have to give those albums a good few spins, which should'nt be too arduous! ;) |

I do need to pick up that new Sufjan cd. I really enjoyed Michigan. I just found a copy of Oddballs finally, and also picked up My Morning Jacket "At Dawn" which my cd store has never had, and Pleasant Grove's first ep as well.

Picked up 5 cds today.... 4 of them for the US equivalent of $3 each... got Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals (already knew it, but at that price had to get an original) Billy Bragg and Wilco Mermaid Avenue part 1 (same as above) Shins - Oh Inverted World Iron and Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days
Incredibly stoked to get the last two, pretty rare to see them in stores down here let alone at that sort of price!
Also got the new Oasis album. |

Mikey Dread's a huge name in reggae - a legendary figure for many. I think he only worked with The Clash in the very early era. Incidentally, I saw him do a club show back in February and it was very very impressive. If you care for '70s-style reggae and get a chance to see Mikey Dread you should do so without question. He's still active - touring, recording, etc. He's never stopped and I hope he never does.
Nothing is ever something. |

Latest purchase: "Someday We Will Foresee Obstacles" by Syd Matters. Very nice indeed. More fleshed out than the first album, definitely a grower.
