I don't! That's the best part of it. This month I bought 25 CDs and 2 DVDs for €90. I fucking love sales.

Well I'm a married guy, so the money I save on hookers is spent on CDs.
Seriously, I usually have a €50-60/month policy, but I can't resist when it's sales time.

I'm really looking forward to that album, but I'll probably just buy it in a store. I believe Belle and Sebastian's new one comes out the same day.
I've cataloged some Arvo Pärt CD's for work, but I have no idea what they actually sound like.

Just now giving a first listen to "Oral Fixation vol. 2" by Shakira. (Yes, some of us do buy on the basis of reviews.) First Shakira I've bought; sounds good through seven tracks. And ....
Lyle Workman provides guitar on nine of the eleven tracks! What a surprise, at least to me. Is that news here?
First noticed Shakira years ago channel-hopping through Spanish language TV stations. The disc is well-produced and I do love her voice. Sounds like the reviews were onto something.
The same order delivered the latest New Pornographers and the first album by Go Betty Go (Nov 2005), whom darwin and I saw opening for the Breeders when we caught them in 2004, around March or so. Haven't listened to them yet but I know I'll like the Pornos, and suspect the same of GBG. |

I love Boards of Canada, but are they doing anything different? They have a very unique sound, which I love, but are they doing anything new to wow us? I want to know before I get anything after Geogaddi.

I just bought this yesterday.
The band actually opened with "The Tain" when I saw them back in October.

Is this THE Shakira?
Yes, THE Shakira: Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll.
Having listened to it through twice, I really like it. It’s all over the stylistic map but mostly rocks and pops. Sweet disc. I wasn’t seeking it out but in perusing various review sites I kept running into positive mentions, so I bit, and then then learned of the Workman connection, which shows. I haven’t heard any singles or seen any videos, so I don’t know how they’re pushing it. Hopes it’s not the track “featuring” Santana, for that is just about the weakest thing on the disc (though I do like Santana here and elsewhere).
Here’s part of what All Music Guide has to say about it:
“... if anybody was expecting the [the album] to be a continuation of Laundry Service [her first English language album and her American breakthrough, I guess - E], consisting of nothing but sexy dance tunes and power ballads, Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 will be a bit of a surprise: it's a deadly serious, ambitious pop/rock album, most assuredly not frivolous dance-pop. Even when the album dives into pulsating neo-disco, it's in the form of a protest song in the closer, "Timor," which isn't exactly by-the-numbers pop. And that's a pretty good description of Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 in general -- it's pop, but it's unconventional.” “.... Shakira winds up with music that is distinctive as both songs and recordings. And that means that Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 is not only a markedly different album from Fijación Oral, but from every other record in her catalog -- or, most importantly, from any other pop album in 2005. Other artists may be bigger than Shakira while others may make more fully realized albums, but as of 2005, no other pop artist attempts as much and achieves as much as Shakira, as this often enthralling album proves.” |

the last few CD's I bought lately have been"
Franz Ferdinand- You Could Have It So Much Better *I met these guys in Seattle when I was there for a wedding. They actually stayed in the hotel room across the hall from me. They are extremely nice guys and talented. I really liked their first album and owned it. They gave me and 7 of my friends free tix to there show in Seattle. There shows are a lot of fun. When their new album came out I had to buy it. I think it is a good album.
Salim Nourallah- Beautiful Noise ( www.myspace.com/salim ) *This is a great cd. He is a local (Dallas) artist and actually just recorded my bands new E.P. He is very talented and writes great music. Check him out. He has been compared to Jeff Tweedy vocals and Beatles/Kinks style music.
The Kinks- The Village Green Preservation Society * Great album that I have never owned and had to buy.

I almost forgot:

Well, I listened to a couple MB albums a while ago and I didn't notice any difference between them. In fact, I didn't notice any difference between 2 songs. So I say, buy them all.

Reminds me of an old friend who once disparaged Jethro Tull's catalog as sounding like the same song over and over. When, years later, he praised them, I reminded him of that statement, to which he inevitably replied "Yes, but it's a great song!" |

This morning I woke up with a Shakira song, Hey You, in my brain.
By the way, it's her 28th birthday today, as well as Ayn Rand's 101st. Happy Ground Hog Day!
I know: enough with the Shakira. |

Yesterday my PO box delivered Barbara Manning's "One Perfect Green Blanket" (1991). Talk about a great alt-rock disc! It's been almost forever since I've been so blown away by a fresh audition.
I got it on the basis of a track included on the unreleased tracks disc of the double disc "What's Up Matador" compilation from Matador Records (1997). |
