I just got back from watching the Go! Team. Mike, you were soooo right. What an awesome show, one of the most enjoyable gigs I've been to in far too long. Particular note, the frontwoman is an absolute star.
Bottle Rocket's gonna be everywhere this summer.

I couldn't agree more. They create such a good party atmosphere. Everyone was moving at the gigs I went to, you just couldn't help it.
They are a nice bunch of people too.

Clutch both Monday and Tuesday night. I was expecting great things from them as I'd heard such amazing reviews from friends. Monday nights show was good - not enough for me to go into total raptures but good. Last night however was a different story entirely - they were barely halfway through the first song and I was crying with joy. Totally different set list - far funkier and heavier than Monday nights which had been more bluesy. Their albums suddenly now have a whole new sound to them. Neil Fallon is like a mad preacher on stage and JP the drummer is such fun to watch (double dose too since he was drumming for one of the support bands Five Horse Johnson). I think I'm in dire need of sleep and need to still absorb the previous two days fun. The big result was also that I hunted down a photographer that I keep seeing at pretty much every show I've been to this year - so not only does he have impeccable taste in music, but a visual record of everything I've seen. I'm just hoping I didn't terrify him too much.

DFA1979 again last night. Holy crap that is one hell of a lot of bass they throw at you. I had earplugs in and it hurt like hell at some stages. Probably the hottest show I've ever been to - Jesse and Sebastien were dying on stage however I'm in no position to complain, (if the heat drives them to remove their shirts then that is never ever a bad thing). Only let down for me was the crowd - the last show they did was outstanding and the crowd went absolutely insane (they reckoned their best show in the UK of their last tour - the first time they'd ever played a city where they'd never been before and sold out the venue) - whereas last night (and it kills me to say this) since the crowd was made up of far more women that normal because of last night's football, it just seemed a little bit less crazy than I like it to be. I definitely recommend trying to see them though - their music is such a strange blend of danceable heavy and it's quite something to see live.
Oh and no photographer (damn - clearly he doesn't have the impeccable taste in music that I thought he did) - did I mention that he's got a shaved head and tattoos all the way down his right arm Kathryn?

They don't seem to get great live reviews Nic, and my friends weren't impressed (and they are fans).

No - I'm merely commenting on the fact that NME has a policy now reducing the space and importance given to live reviews - they're seen as unimportant.
And like I said before your friends must have been unlucky and had a shit show. |

So does Q, and I'm guessing that other mags don't have a much greater percentage dedicated to live reviews.

Darn shame too. The Musician's Union will be incensed.
I used to write for a free magazine called Logo - they were mainly dedicated to new music, but they always had an extensive live review section, which complemented it nicely. Unfortunately, the website hasn't had an update for about a year I guess, and I've not seen the print copy anywhere for ages. You can get an idea however, here: http://www.logo-magazine.com/livereviews/display.asp?ReviewID=330 It's actually pretty good. There's some very early reviews of bands that made it pretty big.

Don't even THINK of getting me started on that pile of shite known as Q. And you've not been to a gig with me yet. So I have no frame of reference as comparison. |

Will do Shine will do - but it looks like I have to choose between either Download or Leeds Festival and since Pixies are playing Leeds I may have to go with the rather obvious choice of Frank. |

Don't - this is weighing very very fucking heavy on my mind. Did I mention that I have free hotel accommodation with my best buddy & another good friend of ours is flying in for LA to share the room.
But Leeds has the following:
Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Incubus, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Funeral for a Friend, NOFX, Alkaline Trio,Turbonegro, Bullet For My Valentine
Bloc Party, The Futureheads, LCD Soundsystem, British Sea Power, Willy Mason, The Duke Spirit, Hal, Sons & Daughters, The Rakes, Art Brut, Maximo Park
Echo & The Bunnymen, Adam Green, The Dresden Dolls, The Engineers, Amusement Parks On Fire, Komakino, Towers Of London, The Rifles, Battle, Every Move A Picture, Young Offenders Institute, Boy Kill Boy, Forward Russia
The Pixies, The Killers, Queens Of The Stone Age, The Coral, Elbow, Dropkick Murphys, Finch, Kasabian, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Cooper Temple Clause, My Chemical Romance, Fightstar, The Subways, Death From Above 1979, The Dead 60s, The Blood Brothers
The National, Saul Williams, Charlotte Hatherley, Ladytron, Mando Diao, The Paddingtons, We Are Scientists, The Blood Arm, The Cherubs, Two Gallants, The Rogers Sisters
The Foo Fighters, Kings Of Leon, Razorlight, The Charlatans, Dinosaur Jr, Roots Manuva, Simple Plan, Transplants, The Wedding Present, The All American Rejects
The Tears, Babyshambles, The Arcade Fire, Hot Hot Heat, The Longcut, The Cribs, Nine Black Alps, The Kills, Juliette And The Licks, Editors, The Others
The Go! Team, The Raveonettes, Sleater-Kinney, The Caesars, Yeti, Mystery Jets, 747's, Clor, Neon
Transplants, Hatebreed, Anti Flag, Rise Against, Eighteen Visions, Dwarves, Capdown, Emmanuel, Million Dead, No Comply, The Explosion
And that's still not the final line up. While I'm probably more excited about the download line up - those are all bands that I'd pay or go see in any case. The thing with Leeds Reading for me this year is that there are a fair few bands that I'd probably not make that much of an effort to see but am still interested in seeing.
I dunno. Need to decide by Tuesday though. |

I'm getting to go as freebies thanks to a good friend (did I mention these are VIP passes), which is why I'm having to choose (Leeds has sold out, so it's not as if I can buy a ticket for that, especially since I will not do ebay for tickets) - it's a case of too many people complaining that I get all the good freebies, so she's wanting to share the love. |

out of curiosity, what year/festival has been considered as the best ever?
i remember lolla 2, lush, pearl jam, j and m chain, soundgarden, ice cube, ministry, and the red hot chili peppers. i remember eddie doing his scaffolding climb during even flow (ten got huge between march and october that year). soundgarden's guitar(kim thayil) blew me away. ministry got big on the club scene here just before the show and everyone went crazy for jesus built my hotrod, and rhcp did the flaming hats and pure energy show, it was great.
i went to reading '93 and spent the first night wathcing main stage - ned's, rage vs the mach, porno 4 pyros, second night in the side tent - adorable, swervedriver, eat, blur, eat again(radiohead called in sick). i saw tool and therapy in the early afternoon, can't remember which days but they were both great.

SHINE SHINE SHINE! Les Savy Fav have confirmed for ATP's NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS - a long weekend kind of mini festival thing, which means that if I don't see them then, they are more than likely going to be touring around then! Finally - and all thanks to you. |

Went to Stephen Malkmus last night. I had such a great night. Got into the venue, and within fifteen minutes found Brian. We chatted for forty five minutes, before the opener went on. They were call KAIR, and I don't reccomend them. The first ten minutes of the set were cool, but once they got past that, it just became sort of unbareable. Fortunately, they played for less than forty-five minutes. It took about half an hour for SM and the Jicks to set up. Brian and I, plus two of my friends had pretty a good view. All the way to the right of the stage, about ten or fifteen feet from Mr. Malk. They played for about an hour and twenty minutes, and had one two song encore. The energy was great, as was the vibe. My only two complaints were the lack of songs off of the first album, and the weak ending. The last song was sung and guitar-ed by by the drummer while Stephen covered drums. Kind of a lame way to end things off. When the house lights came on, most of the audience appeared a bit dumb struck. I was really hoping for a second encore.
Anyway, I'm sure thats more detail than any of you want. But I'm still in pseudo-shock from being in the same room as one of my heroes.
And future shows. I'm going to Siren Fest (free show in Coney Island on July 16th). Spoon is headlining. Besides that, possibly a Spinto show.

i saw the doves tonight, they were good. and very, very loud. damn, i love the commodore. nothing special happened, i missed the opener so no news on the black lists. i think the tickets were a little overpriced but i'm still glad i went. first time i tried to see them about 3 years ago me, my cousin, and my roommate took a bus and got to the show about 9:30, just as it ended!!! apparently it was a friday and the club they were at has live shows early and then kicks everyone out and has their dance night, it was bollocks.
