No guitar smashing, but Stuart Murdoch did dance around a lot, and jumped off the stage at one point.

Yep, agree 100% - one of the best gigs I saw all last year.
I'm going to see the Pipettes in a couple of weeks, should be fun.

Missed them in Vicar St. plus The Go! Team later on in the year (I was broke). The Pipettes do really seem like a fun gig.

I have never actually heard them, but my oh my they look good. Or at least one of them does. I have never taken my eyes off her for long enough to see what the other two look like.

They're another Next Big Thing, I'm told. But they're fun, it's almost fifties-ish rock'n'roll styled.
You people are Irish - I want to see the Chalets next time they're in town, anyone familiar with those?

Ray Davies last night:
I'm Not Like Everybody Else Where Have All The Good Times Gone Till The End Of The Day After The Fall 20th Century Man Oklahoma USA Village Green Picture Book I Go To Sleep Big Sky Sunny Afternoon Dead End Street Next Door Neighbour Over My Head The Tourist Low Budget
(intermission)
London Song Harry Rag Have a Cuppa Tea Days Stand Up Comic Things Are Gonna Change (The Morning After) Long Way From Home The Getaway (Lonesome Train) Tired Of Waiting Set Me Free All Day And All Of The Night
encore You Really Got Me Lola
The crowd was a bit pissed that he did so much stuff from his new album, but that has to be expected, i think. He didn't do any of my top 5 Kinks songs, but it was still very worthwhile.

Currently got Lined up: Radiohead, May 12th, Empress Ballroom, Blackpool. (Did anyone else manage to get tickets? I got fucking lucky but my mate ended up paying £170 for 2 on ebay. Never seen them before, promises to be excellent.) And Paul Buchanan, May 21st, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. (Lead singer of the Blue Nile and living legend. I tried to start a topic on the Blue Nile but nobody responded, either way they're fucking excellent. Buy 'High' by the Blue Nile and if you don't like it I will personally give you your money back.)

Sigur Ros in perth in just under 2 weeks time. should be a good show. am very pleased on ythe way back from melbourne for work so don't have to pay for flights or anything. will be my first gig in a year and a half.
was sposed to see them at the galway arts festival in ireland in 2002 but they cancelled. sux cause i'd pretty much travelled all the way from new zealand to see them. so will be good to finally catch up with them.

I'm seeing Low do Don't Look Back: i.e. they play Things We Lost In The Fire in full, and a bunch of other songs as well. Nice.

have fun mccheese. the dirty three did that for ocean songs late last year. i would almost have flown all the way from australia to see that.
tho i think i'd prefer to see low to secret name to things we lost in the fire. oh well.

A colleague of mine saw that Dirty Three show. Had I been familiar with them then, I'd have probably sold my own mother for tickets, so maybe it's for the best...

yes, probably. nah, would have been amazing, but you can't have everything. am suprised i haven't seen a recording of it surface as of yet.
additionally simon, if you havn't already bought ocean songs i'd buy it from bella union (their UK label) and you get a bonus dvd of them recorded live in australia. 'tis very very good.

FUCK YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!! Just got me 2 tickets to see Fuckin' SONIC YOUTH on April 20th at the Nouveau Casino. It's a one-off gig in a VERY small venue (well, it's small for the SY at least. I think it holds 300 people). I haven't seen them since 1995 I think and it's gonna be fucking awesome.

In terms of the whole performance, that was probably the best gig of my life. I have never heard so many people leaving (after the show), claiming it to be the best gig they have ever been to.
Sigor Ros I salute you!

Really? When I saw (not so much saw as I couldn't see a fucking thing but you know what I mean) them they were good, but I don't know I'd say *that* good to be honest. Top ten maybe, Top five, no..
To clarify because that sounds harsh, they were excellent but sometimes it takes a little bit more than playing the songs well to be a good gig. Couldn't fault the band at all, just, somthing missing.
I loved the visuals though, some of them a bit weird, some of them bloody marvelous. |

Perhaps you all are talking about another band, but aren't Sigur Rós doing mostly quiet, orchestra-based ambient stuff? I can't really imagine them doing a great show. Isn't everyone standing (or sitting?) still, listening in quiet, slipping off to a meditative state?
I saw Element Of Crime yesterday. A german band probably nobody here knows. They do melancholic rock/chansons with nice witty lyrics. Music and lyrics often border and at times cross over to kitsch. I love them anyway. They have a trumpet! |

No no no! It's not really ambient at all - pretty bombastic and ecstatic. Very good live.

when i saw Sigur Ros, people were falling asleep left and right in the Opera House where the show was - i was disappointed in them (my fellow gig goers, not in SR).

That's what I was thinking. But Cheeseman and HPM are talking about great live performances; "bombastic and ecstatic" even... At least they are controversial. |
