That pains me greatly to hear. Wish I could have been there.

Sadly no. I say sadly, but her replacement was fantastic.

I saw TMBG twice on New Year's Eve (leading into New Year's Day). The first one was really good, and included some stuff they don't play very often ("The Day," "Absolutely Bill's Mood," "Hope That I Get Old Before I Die"), plus a Venue Songs section narrated by Robin Goldwasser, and a group performance of "Auld Lang Syne." The second show was rushed, and had almost the exact same setlist. Now I know never to go to two shows in a row by the same band again.

I just bought tickets to see Laura Cantrell in February. If possible, I might also see Belle and Sebastian (with the New Pornographers opening) in March.

Secret Chiefs 3 and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum last night.

I'd never really heard either of these groups before attending last night but went on the recommendation of a friend whom I met there.

SC3 is an entirely instrumental outfit and features Trey Spruance (Mr. Bungle) on guitar and some strange looking mid-east guitar looking thing (not a sitar) that he finger picked. They had two violinists (the mighty Eyvind Kang being one of'em!), bass, drums and a keyboard and seemed to alternate between crazy off kilter Arab music and some equally batty surf guitar music. Interesting stuff.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum were okay, they had a lady on violin and vocals who sounded a bit like Bjork, a percussionist, regular drummer, guitar/singer (this dude was a total freakazoid) and bassist. They were all dressed up more or less like the droogs from Clockwork Orange. Some pretty nice moments musically but for some reason I couldn't get that into them. The singer was a bit frightening to look at, if I had to draw a picture of what I thought Satan looked like it'd probably resemble this guy. He had some ferocious hardcore vocal stylings but his in between song banter consisted of really nerdy Michael Stipeish comments. Pretty intriguing stuff though. Check them out if you get the chance.

I just bought tickets for Belle and Sebastian today.

CVB WAS going to play a concert in my area, but they cancelled it for some reason.

I saw Mogwai on Thursday night, and it was far, far better than any other gig mentioned in this thread.

Omigod, you're the first person I know who's heard of them. I was just listening to them while running. I can't wait to see them next month.

So you like them, huh? Cool.

This week is Bad Plus week - 2 sets tomorrow, 2 sets thursday, 1 set friday. I was at first skeptical, like VoVat said for seeing TMBG twice in one night, but jazz is so improv base that the two shows could have very little in common.

Should I go see Deerhoof in April? I don't know much about them, except the track Sir Rock put on his mix that I loved.

It was my first DM concert. So what can I say? I was completely blown away.

They seemed to be in a pretty good mood. Dave even joined Martin for one of his songs (instead of leaving the stage) and gave a shoutout for Fletcher. And they have an excellent drummer, I think.

The audience wasn't into it all the time the way I thought it would be.
First, I heard people complain afterwards, that they played the older songs exactly like on the prior tours. That, I can't really tell.
And second, they played a LOT from the new record. So in about the middle of the concert it was mostly new and/or slow songs. The audience got a bit quite then.

But I liked it a lot. The whole time. I hope to see them again in summer when they are back in Berlin to play two open air shows.

Ok, I won't give away the setlist, but the tour is called "Touring The Angel" for a reason.

So enjoy the concert and be sure to tell us about it!
