I saw the New Pornographers last night in Philadelphia. The setlist was fairly similar to the one they played at Brian's show. The songs I can remember, in no particular order (aside from the first two and the last one), were:
Twin Cinema Use It The Bones Of An Idol Jackie, Dressed In Cobras These Are The Fables Sing Me Spanish Techno The Bleeding Heart Show Streets Of Fire The Electric Version All For Swinging You Around It's Only Divine Right The End Of Medicine Miss Teen Wordpower Mass Romantic (introduced by Carl Newman as "an old favourite"; I kind of don't think any of their songs are old enough to qualify as such, but I suppose it's all relative) The Fake Headlines The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism Testament To Youth In Verse
I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied. |

I wouldn't say you were trendy, K.
Arf.
But yeah, the show'll definitely be like that. Lots of indie kids young enough to be your children. Possibly NME sponsored, you know the sort.

*cough* I'm not that old.
The problem I have with this kind of gig is that there tend to be a hell of a lot of people who will be going purely to be seen and have absolutely no interest in the band other than being able to say that they were there. I remember seeing the White Stripes a good few years ago at Brixton where most of the crowd were more interested in who else was there in the crowd than who was on stage. It was a thoroughly frustrating and intensely annoying night.

Hey Nic, I went to an NME club night recently, and I was a good 5 or 6 years older than the average attendee. Shudder.
And Kathryn, this is a sig of the old school. I resurrected it for no apparent reason.

Shows like that are funny, it's fun to go and just watch the whole social scene spectacle. I imagine Strokes/Hives/Vines/Jet etc. scenes are perfect for that sort of thing. I almost got talked into going to see Turbonegro and I'm sure that would've been an interesting crowd. They are a good/amusing band but I've seen some pictures of the Turbojugend and it's a little scary. |

Turbonegro are supposed to be great fun live. I met Happy Hank recently (sans make up) and was amazed by how normal he was given that he's famous for launching fireworks from his ass.

I nearly died this morning when I read about a Galaxy 2 Galaxy / Los Hermanos / Laurent Garnier live gig next month in Paris. This will be the absolute best night ever witnessed.

Arctic Monkeys were good. The hype is very much well deserved. Showed far greater range than I anticipated. Fabulous frontman and really really good drummer.

Smog and Jurado in Iceland! Hey, there must be hope for us down here as well then.
Is Sondre Lerche's music any good? I downloaded one or two tracks of his a while back after reading some good reviews but maybe didn't give it enough time.

We've gone on holiday by mistake.
Sondre Lerche music is very good, he's an excelent songwriter, in my humble opinion...and I'm not really in Iceland, I would like to be but I'm not!
Today I heard that Sigur Ros are playing here again, and they are coming to my home town, so maybe I'll have the chance to see them in November.

65Daysofstatic tonight - should be swirly guitar noisy bliss.
So many gigs coming up - if I manage to get to go to all the ones listed in my diary I'm going to be a very happy (and poor) surfer.

65days were much better than what I thought they'd be - in fact so good I ended up buying the t-shirt & the cd. Took a while for the crowd to get into them - think it might be down to the fact that I think musically they're pretty hard to pigeon hole into a genre, which is one of the things I love about them. Played some new stuff which blew me away.

Well, I've seen the New Pornographers, and I'm still not cool. Doesn't necessarily mean it won't work for you, though.

Was going to see NP's but unfortuantely that was canceled.
I definately have Bauhaus coming up.
Arcade Fire and Beck and NIN/Queens of the Stonage and Son Volt were awesome. (seprately of course)
There are several more shows but I am going to wait till the last minute to see if I can make it.
Gotta love all the shows going on right now!

I saw Arctic Monkeys and Nine Black Alps play the other week. Nine Black Alps were better, but then I prefer their songs.
I also saw Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster the other week and they were as excellent as ever.

I'm going to miss seeing an acoustic Cracker concert. They would have to show up in town on Halloween night. |

Ye Carl, abit of a nostalgia trip for me. The Liars are playing next month here. I highly recommend everybody rushing out and buying 'They were wrong so We Drowned' if you like your Sonic Youth, Suicide, Silver Apples type influenced bands. Can't wait to see them again, one of the best gigs I witnessed last year.

I have to somehow decide between Mastodon and Eighties Matchbox B-line Disaster. They're playing on the same night in completely different cities, so there's not even the option of trying to somehow cram both in (which, lets face it would be impossible in any case, but a fun notion to entertain). It would be my 4th Mastodon show this year and it would also be an awesome night of fun however I've not seen my beloved Matchbox this year. I irritate myself for complaining about having to make a choice, but it's one that I'm going to agonise over for days if not weeks.

Back in March, I saw David Lowery and Johnny Hickman do an acoustic show. They played both Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker songs. It was really cool.
