I slightly forgot to go to see Oceansize this week, which was a little dense, so I've made a list on my board of upcoming gigs, reads as follows:
Go! Team @ Astoria
Sigur Ros @ Brixton Academy
Breeders @ Blackheath Halls
Kristin Hersh @ Scala

I can't decide which I'm more excited about, thats a damn fine list.

Ooh, he's got an arm off!

The Wedding Present, next month. All Souls night.

I haven't heard anything from them before.

To soothe my mind so I'm always sober
Always aching, always heading towards

Last night I saw Viva Voce, The Kooks and Clor (left before The Departure played their set).

Great venue but possibly the worst sound I've ever heard at a gig. I also made the mistake of eating an enormous meal before going out which meant that I felt like a pregnant women (or at the very least what I imagine one must feel like) for the evening. Sadly the crowd were awful too - totally uninterested in the bands which meant that it was shitty atmosphere too. Or maybe I've been spoilt with who I've seen lately and my standards are too high.

Hey Cheesman,

Are you going to see Kristin on the Throwing Muses songs or solo material night?

I meant to get tickets for the Throwing Muses night but ordered the wrong ones. I'm gonna stick with fates choice for now. It's all good anyway.

Monday night is Throwing Muses songs.

The agency 'See tickets' listed the difference on their website. It's also on the Throwing Music website at

http://www.throwingmusic.com/tourdates.html

Nic, should I go see Dilinger Escape Plan in Montreal later this week? Ditto Death From Above?

Ooh Dillinger Escape Plan is a whole bunch of craziness that I'm afraid to send you to. Death From Above are good fun though and I'd recommend them (with obligitary ear plugs though).

Hang on my beloved Ben has hurt his arm - are you sure the DEP gig isn't cancelled?

Okay - they're very very heavy. The heaviest band I've ever ever seen live. There will be a big big mosh pit and much screaming. Blood will possibly be shed. Much of their music is regarded as pretty unlistenable by the vast majority of people and I'll be the first to admit that it can be just one big racket but somehow it translates into an unforgettable live experience. I love them live and they are my favourite live band. I'm sending you a clip of them live so that you can decide for yourself.

I saw DEP without ever hearing a note of their music till the night of the gig. They were very, very tight and Surf is right, VERY LOUD. I liked them but I think it was mainly because they were in between vocalists as a band and Mike Patton was taking up the slack for'em that night.

I officially hate you for that.

Seeing them fronted by Mike Patton is a dream I fear will never come true for me. Irony Is A Dead Scene is one of my ultimate favourite albums of all time despite being an EP.

I've been to a lot of gigs lately,

Smog was wonderful!!!
Woven Hand amazing again, I've seen him twice and he's so powerfull!
Sondre Lerche, Patrick Wolf, Damien Jurado, The National...
I guess this small country is now on their list, and that's very good for me.

(big hug to you Nicole)

Nicole, my buddy recorded the gig I mentioned on his mini disc. The sound quality could be better but I'll see if I can't send you some mp3's of it (got to transfer them to my comp first). They even do a cover of Justin Timberlake's "I just wanna love you Babe".

I saw the Decemberists for the first time last night. I wasn't sure what to expect, but, in addition to having excellent songs, they're great showpersons. There was a fair amount of audience participation, and some amusing introductions.

Next week, the New Pornographers!

Lots of dilemmaes going on... First, I bought tickets to see Depeche Mode in February. I got them 3 months ago and was looking forward to see the gig, although I'm not a big fan (Mrs Denis is though). Turns out their gig is right in the middle of the week my parents booked for the winter holidays. So I have to choose between a week of surfing in the Alps and a DM gig. That would be easy but my wife will be pissed if she misses the gig, and we sort of promised my parents we'd go skiing with them. That sucks.
Secondly, Sonic Youth are coming to Paris at the end of the month. The gig is part of a series of events around John Lennon, not sure of SY are gonna cover his songs or not actually. They're playing in the best venue of the city, a place that usually holds comtemporary music concerts, excellent acoustic, comfy chairs if you want to sit... And they charge 40 fucking euros for a ticket. That's €80 for both of us. We're kinda trying to save money right now, but on the other hand, I haven't seen SY since 1996... So I'm not sure what to do.

Recent gigs

The Fall last friday in Liverpool, they were tighter than I remember, MES does appear to have been fossilized especially when you contrast him with his new fresh faced band members. As usual they werent the best thing on the bill John Cooper Clarke was, closely followed by A Guy called Gerald at some Rave do downstairs at the Carling.

The Weddoes in Manchester in Nov - first time in what 10 years

Off down to the Breeders in that London for the Saturday Night Gig- cant wait,

I am gutted I cant go to the Kristen Hersch gigs

My girlfriend decides that since she's going to the Jello Biafra/Melvins show with me in November that I must go see Aimee Mann with her at Downtown Disney House of Blues tonight. I like some of Aimees music but the House of (everything but) Blues at Downtown Disney is not always an enjoyable experience, in fact it I somewhat despise it. The first show I ever went to here the dude next to me whips out a glass pipe to smoke and is immediately descended upon by a headset wielding yellow jacket who promptly ejects him from the venue, and he never even lit up! Not a good sign. Plus they've conveniently placed the venue at the very end of the DD boardwalk so your forced to walk through endless throngs of tourists and right by all the annoyingly inviting Disney shops.

So on to the opening act. Some dude named Teitur from the Faroese Islands. Apparently he's hot shit there (thanks for pointing that out to the crowd Toytur!) and he won a grammy* (thanks for pointing that out too!) for some song about a girl . I told Rachel to wake me when he was done. The last three songs he did he stated "were part of a sleep trilogy". If by that he meant "sleep inducing" then he accomplished his mission and then some. It ended eventually. (seemingly five hours of eventually!)

After taking a extremely generous amount of time after Teetur was finished Mrs. Mann came out. Now, being subjected to her songs by my SO I've actually found her music to be quite enjoyable, she's a good songwriter I'll give her that. The music and over all sound were good but volume way too low. And the band members looked like they came out of central casting for "LA Music Dudes" complete with neatly combed yet scruffy facial hair. Tousled hair that was styled to look tousled ala Ryan Seacrest. They would've fit in nicely with Maroon 5 or Third Eye Blind. But nevertheless everything was going okay until I thought I'd be funny and chime in with a request for "Voices Carry" in between songs. I think it was right then that I immediately became "that asshole in the crowd" because the way everyone (Aimee included) looked at me I may as well said "Your mama gives great #*%@ Aimee!" A few songs after that we decided it probably best if we left. Which probably explains why I'm at home alone writing this.

At least my cat still likes me!

*(a Faroese Island grammy no less!)

Heywood I'd give a kidney to go see the Biafra Melvins show.

At the moment I'm looking forward to Arctic Monkeys on Monday night (though that could be fashionista trendy wanker hell and not nearly heavy enough for me and what I need right now)

Smog and Jurado in Iceland! Hey, there must be hope for us down here as well then.

Is Sondre Lerche's music any good? I downloaded one or two tracks of his a while back after reading some good reviews but maybe didn't give it enough time.

Yeah, I saw the Jello/Melvins very first gig in SF and it was pretty good. Jello likes to babble on quite a bit, but it makes for good heckling. Weren't they just in the U.K. not too long ago?

Concerts just make me want to play these days, my hands twitch even if the show is good, but I´d give Nicole´s kidney to see Jello Biafra and the Melvins.

Okay maybe I was feeling a little teeny tiny bit overexcitable when I posted that this morning. Melvins only played London when they were here (which I missed) and I don't think they've ever done a Jello Melvins show here.
