anyone else agree he's kind of underrated? i mean his more recent stuff, completely overrated, and i think that's the problem, it kind of taints his older stuff too. but i'm sat here listening to his best of album (sting & the police stuff) and you'd be hard pressed to find many more bands/artists who would have a best of *this* strong! every song on there is a classic!

I'm more of a fan of The Police than Stings solo efforts, but yeah I agree about the Best Of.
Their songs were so simple, and the band too, just bass, drums and a guitar. Always a powerful combination.
i just love the way they have so much space in their songs. They could be loud when they wanted but too could be so soft.
Do-Do-Do...love the verse chords. sting knows how to write a chorus. Walking On The Moon....ah, what am i doing quoting their songs. Too many to mention, the best of is a must have (if you like them that is). And for newbies to their work, a brilliant starting point.
one more, love Tea in the Sahara. The bass is so cool. As always. It's Sting.

I'm with Broken Face, though, I can't really get into Sting's solo stuff as much.

Must admit I dug Englishman In New York when it came out, that cheesy drum solo puts a smile on my face. sometimes cheese is good.

I do not think he is underrated in the least. I cannot stand the Police. I cringe everytime I hear Roxanne. Ugh. Sting is easier to take, but, nah.

I love the song Shape of My Heart, too bad it was in a shitty Billy Baldwin movie.
I like that whole CD actually, although I can't remember what that is right now. If I had energy I would go looking, but I don't.

I loathe sting and, I am afraid to say, the police. I cant recall one song particularly by the police that I like. My brother in law probably has the largest collection of police and sting records/memoribilia in the country and he often lectures me on the merits of the man, but no, not for me.

Hey, don't knock the Collins!
Rumor has it (this is another thing I read somewhere) that when he was young Phil Collins was given the 'Chelsea Smile.' Anyone heard of this before? I have looked at big Phil since reading about this and there don't appear to be any smile scars, so I assume its an urban myth.

Chelsea Smile is a form of torture that I believe existed in the East End of London back in 50's. If you see the film The Krays you will see a good example of it. Basically the person being tortured was pinned down, and the corners of their mouth was cut with a sharo knife (in the Krays they use a machete). Pretty barbaric stuff!

The Police are frighteningly wonderful. The band in 1978 played in front of an audience of 6 people in an upstate New York bar, by 1983 they were on top of the music world. Then they just quit at the top of the world... The first two albums are simply amazing because of their simplicity. They get amazing sound out of sparseness and dead space in between notes. Nine-tenths of music is half silence as it would be. The rests between notes are important and they really used those to effect to get the most from what they used in their sparse lines. Drumming was spot-on Copeland can rock out. Sting was at his rawest, purest and best with the Police. His solo work has come to sacrifice content for artsy-ness. But art in any form is not something you set out to do consciously (you don't say I'm gonna make some art today! and suddenly produce a Rembrandt) it comes in a moment or even an instant of inspiration and a realization of sorts. You say "damn this is a good idea!" and start in. Sting apparently used the conscious approach on many solo works but as a result they lack even that artsy-ness they strive for and become a compromise that gains nothing. He has his moments but those old and very spontaneous sounding Police songs kick something big.

Ooooh, thanks for taking the time to explain, Stu, and thanks for feeding my Krays' obsession. I have a thing for them. Shoudda seen Reggie's obit in the NYTimes. I lectured on it and played the Morrissey song for my students, who didn't quite know what to make of me or my weird little interest in these true gangsters.

I really like the Police... I really like all the literary refrences in the lyrics and the fun poppy tunes.
I like Sting too..I've seen him in concert once... and it was so cool... there was a full moon and he played that one song I think it's called moon over burbon street. I used to go sleep to one side of the Nada Como El Sol in for several months in high school...

Yeah The Police were good, not so sure about Sting though. Funny you should admit this though Simon after saying that one of the songs on my first compilation CD sounded like Sting (it was actually Peter Gabriel) and you hated it.
