Though I believe it's not PC to use the gender specific term "actress" anymore, at least around the sensitive-types.

Anyway, I don't believe I've seen this topic around these parts yet, but correct me if I'm wrong. The discussion Floop and I are having about Nicolas Cage and his rare fantastic performance in Adaptation got me thinking about my favorite stars of the silver screen.

I'd say my favorite actor is Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He's given so many kickass performances, many of which outshined the rest of the film, like Flawless, which was far from living up to it's name, but Hoffman was awesome in it. And Love Liza had a great soundtrack and a great performance from Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and a few oddball plot devices, and that was really all it had going for it, but these things, especially Hoffman's performance, made it a good enough film. His performance as Lester Bangs in Almost Famous was definitely one my favorite parts of that movie, especially in the director's cut. Almost Famous made such much more sense in the director's cut. They cut WAY too much out of that for it's theatrical release. Nothing got very well developed or resolved in that version. Other great Hoffman performances can be found in Happiness, State and Main, Red Dragon, Boogie Nights, Big Lebowski, Punch-Drunk Love.

One of my favorite actresses is Kathy Bates, though I didn't think she was particularly good in the previously mentioned Love Liza, but that was because her character was written poorly and she did the best she could with it. I mainly think of the character she played in Misery. Man, she was awesome in that. And also Delores Claiborne, another movie adapted from a King novel. She was one of the highlights of Titanic as the unsinkable Molly Brown. She was also good in a movie that no one has ever seen called A Home Of Our Own. I need to see more movies with her.

I've rambled enough.

Glad to see you're back TarTar. You've been quiet for a while.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is certainly one of the best American actors right now. His work in Happiness impressed me the most.

What do you think of Edward Norton? His acting in American History X was extraordinary.

My favorite Cathy Bates role was the one she played in Misery, breaking James Caan's legs.

I like Catherine Keener a lot as well. She was the highlight in Being John Malkovich.

I would have to say DMX is probably the most talented / underrated actor out there right now.

Another extraordinary Edward Norton performance was Primal Fear. That was the role that put him on the map.

Ahhh, I was just reminded of another actress I really like, Frances McDormand, who was in Primal Fear. Obviously, the roles that come to my mind first are all of the Coen Brothers films she's done.

everyone mentioned so far is great. i agree that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is probably one of the most talented young actors right now.

Naomi Watts is pretty amazing. if the Oscars weren't a joke, she would have won best actress for MULHOLLAND DRIVE.

Yeah, Watts is awesome. I had never seen her before Mulholland Drive and was fucking floored by her performance in that. It was hard to believe she was even the same actress at different points in the film. I have since only seen her in The Ring, which was an okay film, mainly because she gave a good performance and is nice to look at.

Floop, what's the word on that I Heart (Love?) Huckabees movie she's in? Seen it? Any good?

she's good in 21 GRAMS too, though i wasn't crazy about that film. she's starring in Peter Jackson's upcoming KING KONG. perfect casting choice i'd say.

i've heard mixed things about I HEART HUCKABEES. still haven't seen it. but i like David O. Russell quite a bit and the cast looks amazing. i'm semi skeptical though.

David O Russell is one of those directors who i'll go see anything he does because it will probalby be good. and if not good, at least interesting or different.

Flirting With Disaster is the only film of his I've seen, and that was brilliantly hysterical. It helped the hilarity that they had a scene in the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek area, which is where I live. And the guy who was playing the rowdy, trucker Michigander (which was an accurate portrayal of many folks around here) is awesome... David Patrick Kelly. He was the guy in that movie the Warriors who said, "Warriors... WARRIORS... come out to play-i-ay."

I gotta love the Back to the Future movies. I grew up with those movies. Other than that, I've seen Michael J. Fox is a few other good movies, like Casualties of War and a Woody Allen movie that was made for TV called Don't Drink the Water. Oh, and then of course he was in Class of '84 way back in the day. That's a fun exploitation movie.

Good grief. The Calistanian? How long has it been?

I'm going to say my favourite actor is Steve Buscemi - I don't think I've ever seen a bad performance out of him.
Not sure about actress though.

i like it when an actor you think sucks surprises you and gives an excellent performance (like Nick Cage).

say what you will about Tom Cruise, i thought he was great in MAGNOLIA. and in COLLATERAL.

and Robbin Williams really surprised me in ONE HOUR PHOTO. not that i thought he "sucked" per se, but he had just done so many shitty movies.

same with Adam Sandler in PUNCH DRUNK LOVE

Burt Reynolds in BOOGIE NIGHTS

who else?

I heart Philip Seymour Hoffman, John C. Reily, Mark Ruffalo, Edward Norton, Dennis Franz (does he count? He's not in movies really but I LOVE him), Bill Murray and James Spader (duh). Women I like are the afore mentioned and BRILLIANT Catherine Keener, Kate Winslet (have you seen JUDE? Amazing movie)... and I know there are a ton I am forgetting.

I'll be back!

Dennis Franz not in movies? Maybe not nowadays but back in the day he was in a number of De Palma films, plus he was in Die Hard 2!!!

Since you posted Ramona, I'm reminded of an actress that is showing a lot of talent and I know she's gonna have some great roles in the future... Maggie Gyllenhaal.

there is also, of course, Jennifer Connelly. who, aside from the the fact that i'm literally in love with her, i think she's one of the more talented actresses in Hollywood. i'd love to see her in a good comedy for once. every movie she's in she's crying.

I think Paul Bettany is an excellent actor as well. He was absolutely stunning in Gangster No.1, and perked up A Knights Tale considerably.

Well, she is a pretty cryer.

Was HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG good? That reminds me. Also love? Ben Kinsley. He's so good and freaky in SEXY BEAST.

I like Maggie G too but I have only seen her in SECRETARY so I can't really rate her against anyone else.

I thought Jennifer Aniston was good in THE GOOD GIRL. I will be curious to see what else she does, drama wise.

You haven't seen Donnie Darko, Emily? Maggie G is in that, though she's a side character, but she's quite good in it. She was also in Adaptation as Donald Kaufman's girlfriend, but most of her scenes are from a distance for some reason. We only see her up close in a couple scenes. She doesn't do all that much in it anyway.

HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG was slow and predictable.

and they underused Jennifer Connelly.

which is to say, they should have had her out of her clothing more

Did you see Higher Learning? Connelly played a college feminist/lesbian in that. Everything was overstereotyped in that movie, but not in a PCU parody of stereotypes kind of way, they were using the stereotypes in a serious dramatic context. Man, I need to watch that again. Everything was so over the top.

Walken is definitely up there. Biloxi Blues, At Close Range, True Romance, Pulp Fiction and Annie Hall are some of my favorite roles of his that come to mind (Annie Hall being a VERY minor part but it's FUCKING HILARIOUS!). I need to see King of New York sometime.

Walken is awesome, the best was that scene with Dennis Hopper in True Romance.
