The Beatles were cool when they wore the black suits, had the black hair and appeared on the Ed Sullivan show!

But then a few years later they grew their hair out,, got mustaches, glasses.. and each took a look of his own.

After that, the Beatles suck. They didn't have the same "clean cut" image anymore. They looked like a bunch of damn pot smoking hippies. To me, they weren't even the same BAND anymore.

WHY did they change? And any opinions on this.

Got coffee, got donuts, got wasted..

It does not matter what they looked like. What matters is the music they created. I prefer their later stuff by a landslide. The White Album should kick your ass, damnit.

The funny suits were record company marketing. They had leather jackets and greasy hair before that. With commercial success and maturity, they were able to be themselves. Experience and hard work made them better musicians and songwriters, which is when the truly great albums were made (Rubber Soul onwards, IMHO).

Image-wise, I found they cared less and less as time went along. Originally they started out with greaser hair and leather jackets, mind you. After that they went on to the suits. They still played around with their image (i.e. Sgt. Pepper's, etc.) but beyond that, they focused much more on their music and it paid off. I think the Beatles were the best rock band ever. Their body of work should speak for itself. I grew up with the White album, but I didn't really recognize their genius until I got to college. Similar to the Pixies, a lot of musicians today will never really grasp how much the Beatles have influenced their tastes. Within the last couple of years I started listening to them very, very, very closely. I also started digging into their history and chronology (both within their music, and how it related to other music at the time). They broke so much ground with damn near every thing they did. I'm still floored by everything they did. Their earlier albums were much more poppy, with many covers, etc. But even in those they were amazingly articulate with their harmonies and arrangements. And I've been playing guitar for over ten years (which, granted, isn't that long in the grand scheme of things) but I still have tremendous trouble wrapping my mind (and hands) around the chords they would use. They just aren't natural. But they worked. They worked beautifully. And that from a band that drove to the opposite end of London just to learn B7. And a lot of bands today could learn a thing or two from they way they cranked their albums out. Frank has often spoken of how bands would put out two albums a year back in the early days of Rock & Roll. The Beatles did it without comprimising the quality of their albums. I dunno. It's all kick ass to me. I'm hoping spunXtain was being sarcastic. If not, that's okay. The suits look was pretty cool.

rubber soul is untouchable, as is everything that followed, it was the sound of a pop band experimenting and pushing back boundaries. Like westlife releasing the most exciting record you had heard in your life.

I love the early Beatles, too. If I had to pick one, my favorite Beatles album might be the At the BBC thing from 10 years or so ago, but the truth is that I like all Beatles eras/records equally. The Beatles changed because they followed the trends, but in a good way. They were interesting trends. And we (or at least I) don't hold that against them because the songs are so good.

The only thing that bothers me about the early Beatles doesn't have anything to do with them. I don't like the idea some people have that pre-Beatles early 60s pop was no good. The early 60s ruled. The early Beatles are just one example of some of the fun music of that era.

Or early depending on how you look at it, but as it happens, I've not actually slept. I've mentioned it before but I don't ever really sleep, if I get a few hours every other night it's good going.

Ha ha, yes, I am a sweet little angel and words of such a coarse and brash manner would have mightily offended my delicate feminine nature, I might have blushed or fainted and that is most unbecoming and unladylike.

I find the change in Beatles records the most amazing change from any band in such a small space of time...albums from 1964 A Hard Day's Night and Beatles For Sale than in three years there was Sgt Peppers/Magical Mystery Tour stuff....intimate literal ostensibly sincere love songs to outrageously abstract compositions many without any emotive element to them at all...surely it couldnt just be the drugs...Its amazing to note that all there work was done in 8 years...though now that im thinking Pixies knocked over 50 classic songs in 4 years..Beatles did a bit over a 100 brilliant tracks (discounting covers) in 8 years so they are about at the same strike rate...though i find most Beatles albums have at least 3-4 tracks that are noticiably inferior to the rest of the album - when you release 2 albums a year for the most part probably not hard to see why

Ah, Fellow insomniac. I am pretty much exactly the same. At least you have something to do for hours. I usually read, play guitar, or get very drunk. Not too bad at the moment. I usually have spouts of it here and there, when im stressed and stuff.

(sarcastic voice) smite those darn hippies to hell. they should all be burned at the stake. what with their antiwar sentiment, free love, pacchouli, flower power and psychedelic drugs.

what happened to the beatles? Well aliens in the form of tiny fleas invated their ear canals and then mutiplied in their brains and took over with the hippy vibe. It was all down hill from there.

I think the Magical Mystery Tour is very under-rated. That has a lot of really great songs. "Blue Jay Way" always gets me with those flanged drums. I think Ringo really shines on that track.

I haven't hit that album as hard as the others, and really need to. Good thing I've got one of these fancy iPods with all their songs in my pocket right now. I can be listening to it in a matter of seconds. Ah, instant gratification. Yeah, that album rocks. I really like how, from Rubber Soul til the end, in the right setting, I can easily say "My God, this is the best album ever made!" to each one of those albums. It's neat.
