"Bright flash lightens up night sky, object fires across sky at unbelievable speed...
On Sunday night, October 24, 2004, at 23:27 I was driving through Ashland County in Ohio around mile marker 197. I was in a van on I-71 heading towards Columbus." .... Full report here: http://www.nuforc.org/webreports/039/S39932.html
I mentioned hearing about it in the "Ask Dean" thread. We didn't see anything as we were inside all night, but the local AM radio newsbreak said that "if you saw any strange lights tonight, the Sheriff's office says they were meteors." Hmmm, well, I suppose that's a possibility of course. So then the next day they're saying "they were Iridium satellight flashes. Well, that would "fly" if there were still Iridium satellites up there to flash. Weren't they completely decommissioned over a year ago?
So anyway, I want to know if anyone saw this - Crouton, you're in the area of this sighting, did you happen to notice anything? |

Hmm...Yeah, I live in Ashland..umm...I didn't notice anything the last couple of nights and I've always been looking upwards since I saw a UFO when I was 7 or 8. Actually, I take that back. On Saturday night I was coming back from Mansfield and noticed a streak of light in the sky, I think it was just a meteor, though. The one I saw wasn't too incredibly fast, nor cylindrical. Just your standard meteor. You see them more often than you'd think when you're "looking" for them. (As in...not really scanning the sky all of the time, but if you're just aware of it. Hmm..that probably doesn't make any sense. Oh well.)

Yeah, we looked into it and there are supposed to be meteor showers off and on around this time. I've seen quite a few being a nosy sky-gazer myself.
But it looks like this incident was on Sunday night, judging from the report on NUFORC, and according to the witness was far brighter than any meteor. Who knows. Still doesn't explain the cylinder-shaped object he describes. |

I was inside all Sunday night, so that probably explains why I saw nothing. Would liked to have seen it, though!

Apparently there were several of equivalent magnitude. Out of step with the novelty interest that the news usually treats these events with ("Hey stargazers, make sure you crane those necks tonight - gonna be a light show!" etc.) this one was met with the following quote from the radio news break: "For anyone seeing lights in the sky this evening, the county sheriff has asked us to pass along that it is only a meteor shower". The next day they said it was glare from the Iridium satellites. There is an air force base nearby...

Does the sheriff in your town (am I the only one that finds the term quaint) generally warn people of meteor showers in advance? Seems a little suspicious to me all by itself.

Nope, he doesn't. We thought it was pretty suspicious ourselves. Of course, it's possible that the Delaware County Sheriff just happens to have taken up amateur astronomy and non-existant Iridium satellite watching in the last few weeks.
It's the first time I've heard such a 1950's scifi movie-type announcement. |

"COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The following are viewer e-mails to NBC 4 after they saw a bright flash of light in the sky Sunday night in Central Ohio.
I live off of Holt Road in Grove City. As I was driving home this evening around 11:15 p.m., I saw a bright flash of light, looked up and saw what looked to be a streak of fire that quickly dimmed. At first I thought the flash of light was lightning, but then I saw the streak in the sky. I've seen "shooting stars," but this was extremely bright and I had never seen one "burning out" so clearly before.
My husband and I were driving in Pickerington toward Baltimore and we saw something amazing in the sky. It looked like something exploded, making a white flash, then the entire sky was glowing bright blue. We saw something that seemed to be burning, falling in the direction of I-70. The trail of the object was also glowing orange, and then it turned to smoke and dissipated.
There was a flash of blue light in the sky, like an explosion! It was bright enough to light up my block.
I saw it last night as I was standing out talking to a friend. It did not "streak across the sky." It dropped from the sky down.
First of all there was the bright blue flash that lit up the whole sky area, I was facing slightly away from it so it was in the edge of my sight when it exploded, but I turned quickly to it. I saw something twirling down leaving a glowing trail like no other meteorite I have ever seen. I then saw something large drop below it very fast but not like a meteorite.
At no point did I think, not now do I believe it was a meteorite, It had the appearance of either a plane exploding then falling from the sky, Or a space capsule exploding then falling from the sky in a swirling motion as some planes do when they lose control suddenly and crash.
The stream looked like the space capsule that exploded after take off, and spiraled up, but this was in reverse.
I saw the light in Galloway. The only reason I did was because my dogs started going crazy, very agitated and barking right before it happened and I got up to put them outside. It looked like a spotlight from a helicopter it was so bright, only it was blue.
I live in southern Ohio, in Jackson County, and I saw the meteor. It came from the east, lighting up the sky as it traveled, leaving a long, bright trail. It disappeared over the northern horizon. The light was bright enough that the dogs outside started barking."
Sounds like it was quite a show, whatever it was.
Apparently this was seen in at least Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Tennessee. |

I wonder what they were testing? Were there any power fluctuations, things of that nature?
