I think the concern isn't so much that he's recommending buying an album as that people feel like they're being treated like children. That's no reason to react like children, of course...
I don't think most of us need to be beat over the head, but I understand that where he's coming from is a good place and that he's just trying to get his point across.
It certainly is a small price to pay for him taking the time to post what is essentially a journal of the studio process. And I do plan to check out Ellis' stuff now that I have a link to preview it. I've yet to buy a record without having heard it first. Well, that's not entirely true but close.

hey jontiven. I picked up Ellis and gave it a listen today. It's a new tpye of music for me/ Pretty good. Reminds me of a rocked out version of Train, because..Train doesn't......rock, mixed in with a little Rod Stewart.

adam, think back farther to musicians that are actually good, like otis redding. that rod stewart/ train remark may cause people to avoid ellis like the plague!

Sorry, I can only refernce what I know or am familiar with. I didn't really get the Tiven's original explanation that he was a mix of Folgerty ect.

Jon, I hope you don't think I was offended, just trying to show both sides of the issue. Personally I love to have you here, whether you're dishing inside info or just talking as a musician/music lover in another forum.

Jontiven, not offended at all. I like being turned on to new music. I would have never heard of Ellis Hooks if you hadn't brought him up, whether he was a studio musician or not. Through this forum I have been turned on to Tom Waits, EH, and yourself to name a few.

so thats it, end of sessions information? damn, this was helping alot of people get through the pixies reunion hype. Was Reid Paley at the sessions or just co-writer of what Frank brought to Nashville? How would this potential second disc differ from disc one or is it a continuation with the same vibe? How far along are the new songs at this point? The questions could go on and on. Jon, thanks for sharing all you had to share. As the producer, I don't think anything of what you are sharing is truly confidential is it? If so, I guess this is our version of "Strange Goodbye".

Beggar's Banquet... yummy!
About the Ellis Hooks CD... I went to Artemisrecords.com and tried to listen to Uncomplicated but it seems the link doesn't work. Did anyone try it? I heard the allmusic.com extracts but I guess the audio on the Artemis site would be of better quality.

Denis, you can try it on Amazon, there's some extracts. On artemisrecords.com it's a realplayer file, so it's not much high quality.
From what I have heard from Artemis and Amazon, like someone said above, it's not really my "cup of tea" neither. Too much AOR for me maybe, or maybe I'm just too french.

Thanks for the responses Jon. Is it likely that these sessions will be released as a double cd or as two separate cds ala Black Letter Days and Devils Workshop? Just out of curiosity, were you involved musically (as a session player) in this project as well? |

Next call from Frank was a question. "When we did HONEYCOMB, we spent half our time writing charts to the songs in the studio, and we don't have that much spare time. Do you mind if I get a musical arranger to take care of the charts, and maybe play on the sessions?"
bit behind here. but was curious, what form does these charts take and what do they 'layout'? i realise jon may not have time to answer that, so if anyone else can point me in the right direction! i'm just curious!

Yeah, that is an interesting question. When we're teaching a song and lay out the chords, it's just something like
intro: A G A E
verse: E D Db (x6)
transition: F# G# A B (x2) G# A# B C (x2)
Part 2: F# C# C C# (x3) D C# C C# repeat 4x
Outro: F# G# A B Bb Ab Bb (x a lot)
There must be a better way than that.

Charting out songs for sessions where folks are likely to hear the tunes for the first time (a la Nashvegas) is often radically different from a simple arrangement breakdown, and involves a host of other skills.
They are often quite elaborate affairs with different parts and feels both written (and suggested) for each of the major instruments - and sometimes the incidental ones as well.
Since this whole 24-hour album thing had the potential to be a gigantic clusterfuck (even with the stellar talent assembled), I'd wager those charts were many, fairly detailed, and quite labored.

J.T. While the mechanics of the new session appear to have gone well, are there any pointers as to the songwriting style and/or quality by the Artist for these 12 new tracks. While yet to drop the ball in that dept, I'm just curious to know what we can expect will complement the brilliance of Honeycomb version 1.0
btw, as wed has come & gone, was there a noticeable spike there for EH? Did my 1 x copy make a difference?
Thanks again/ mucho appreciacion re your thoughts & info on the forum, J.............

Jon, were any of the catholics involved? was the pedal steel guitar incorporated at all? any duetting/guest vocalists? Your session tales can't be beat, obviously. This Q/A deal is VERY much appreciated!

Thanks for all of the information Jon. I know we all appreciate it. I can't wait to hear the new recordings Frank just laid down. Those albums you are comparing it to are some pretty big shoes. :)
Sorry to see that Ellis Hooks albums didn't jump that much. I bought both of his American releases and even got my brother to buy Uncomplicated out in North Carolina. He is a very good artist.

From everything I've been hearing, it sounds like I need to get this Ellis CD. As soon as I can swing it, I'll do so. And the updates are greatly appreciated. From Jon's brief description of the new material, I think this album will be a real treat. Thanks again, Jon.

Yeah, I like Ellis' stuff in the same way I like Otis Redding or any number of classic acts that I'd say he's quite comparable to... I like it when I hear it on the radio, but it's not really something I'd pick up. That said, I have an uncle who will die when he hears some of these tracks, so I think I may pick him up a copy as a thank-you.

Well I know I bought my copy of the Ellis CD about 3 weeks or so ago, so I have no clue if my purchase showed up on the most recent soundscans or not as I have no clue as to how all of that works. But I think that it's a great disc, the ONLY flaw I personally find is that a few of the songs might drag on for about a minute or so more than I wish that they would. But that is a minor flaw as I tend to like songs that are to the point and then done. Frank seems to get this concept as even Teenager of the Year, the songs seemed to contain exactly the meat that the bones needed even though it was a long album, and then you had BLD and DW which had some super sweet shorter songs like Jet Black River and Out of State. Then again, the longer ending to a song like "21 Reasons" was totally GREAT and ADDED to the song. I think a lot of artists tend to drag songs on for a bit too long however, but Frank does seem to have this concept down pretty well.
But the Ellis album is definitely an A album. I dig it bigtime. Don't know his "story" or anything like that, but I dig the hell out of the majority of what I have heard by the guy... |
