it's funny I was just thinking about FB in Nashville as I was meditating in an attempt to
refresh and listen to a Bob James record I could never get through (didn't make it this time either) musings and questions like: what was the impetus behind the Honeycomb project?
why no Catholics etc.
It was just yesterday that I was trying via this snailspeed connection to piece together what it's
all about and I came across Jon's words which pretty much sets it straight -at one time I thought Honeycomb was a Catholics project of some kind though apparantly Lyle Workman is involved?
(isn't he doing or done work with Beck??)
So anyway rampant ignorance on my part as I have
only breezed through here the past few months.
I just wanted to thank J. Tivens for the info as it is most fascinating to us fans and hearing recent updates is a treat indeed -I'm gonna check
out the Ellis disc when I hit the stores looking for FB's upcoming release very soon here.
And my bonus musicians guess would include Dave
Phillips and Scott Boutier (what the heck).
After all haven't they done a '24 hr' session
or two with Frank before??

Thanks for the delicious beans you've just spilled for us. Keep 'em coming. I could eat this stuff forever.
Are you kidding me? Of course I'll go buy the Ellis Hooks album UNCOMPLICATED. I'm one of the rare non-musicians that live in Nashville and I'll be glad to go to one of your favorite record stores here if you have one, or if not, I'll get it at Tower or Borders Books on West End.
You have been, and continue to be, so very generous with all of your updates. We really appreciate it.
What a great experience you're having working with The Man. It is realy fascinating to follow.
Please let us know when The Man is back in town. Wouldn't it be special if he showcased some of the Honeycomb material at the Station Inn, 3rd and Lindsey, or the Bluebird? It would really make a great Christmas present or one helluva way to start out the new year.
Thanks again, and I'll let you know which songs on UNCOMLICATED are my favorite soon.

oh i should mention that five of the songs were co-written by mr. reid paley...
DUH...sorry about the lamo cut and paste but this pretty much fills in a few blanks also...
-at this point i don't know what I would ask him
other than why he doesn't come to Chicago and do a
30 day run of solo shows at the Chicago theatre
and hang out at Dannys' after hours discussing a film
of tour / recording session with the Catholics.

Funny you mentioned the Ellis album. I went shopping for it today, could not find it in my little indie music store here. Will order from Amazon. Hope that helps y'all out Soundscan wise.

Thanks for the update Jon.
Can't wait to hear more about the sessions with Frank. I am really loving Honeycomb. Incredible songs and recording.
As a side note, I enjoyed "Uncomplicated" so much I went and hunted down Ellis Hooks first album today "Up Your Mind". Can't wait to listen to it tonight.

This info should get collected and added to the database. It's beautiful, thank you.
When I saw the Pixies were playing the Ryman I searched frantically for a still from the DVD documentary of Lenny Breau where he is walking on to Broadway by the side door. That's a huge big deal to me, I specifically searched out that angle when I was there (it hasn't changed an iota). I recently bought the album Hallmark Sessions by Breau and guess who the drummer is! 43 years later and still ass-kicking I'm sure.

2ndly: getting Uncomplicated is a little complicated being a Southern Hemisphere person, will Amazon suffice soundscan wise?
3. I would love to hear the Honeycomb sessions, but don't know if my brain is gonna handle waiting five mths for the official release though, the pain, the pain...

re: ellis hooks, i enjoyed the first listen of the record, have to investigate deeper w/ some headphones one of these days. i can't wait to hear levon helm playing the skins for FB. wow. these sessions sound great. mr. tiven, pray tell, can you reveal the tracklisting for the 24 hour session?

Have you already post a link where we could listen to some bits of Ellis's music?
And a FB related question, how did you get to know him ? What did you knew about him or the Pixies before you started working together on the tribute album?

| Thanks for the infos Mr. Tiven, I'm currently unemployed and as such can't support the Ellis Hooks campaign, but the Otis Blackwell tribute record was great. Really one of the best "tribute" records I can remember really. If I might ask... What was the inspiration for the short recording session? Is it to foster sponteneity in the music? Or is it a nostalgic nod towards Nashville records of the past that were knocked out raw and quickly but became definative classics regardless? Maybe I answered my own question. Also. The most intruiging bit I got from Franks appearance here on the forum was his mention of playing a classical piece during the sessions. That sounds really "out there." Is this seriously being considered as part of the record or was it just horsing around? I'm thinking it's something like the Erik Satie suite by Blood, Sweat and Tears or something. Sounds exciting either way. Hope we get to hear these sessions along with Honeycomb! Thanks again, and when I get some scratch together I'll be sure to check out Ellis. |

Good question. All I know is that JT produced some TOTY b-sides in late '93 or early '94. I guess that's how FB got involved in the tribute album.

I have to say mr.Tiven's idea of 'trading' is a bit excentric
but I do like it in a way, because he's open about what he wants
some people like Ellis, some people not
if you do, consider to buy the album if you can afford it
if you don't, don't feel obliged to buy and read his posts anyway

Jon genuinely wants us to like Ellis Hooks's work. I tend to think a bit like floop (although I didn't understand your last post...), that insisting on making us buy the record looks a bit weird. But on the other hand, let's face it, this is not the best way of promoting the album if Jon's only objective was to sell a bunch of copies. The time he spends on the forum would be more efficiently used contacting music mags, or TV channels to place some songs on shows or whatever. So I'll be naive and say Jon does that cause he truly thinks we'll like the album.
Now that doesn't mean I'll buy it eyes closed... But I promise to go to the Artemis Records site and listen to what I can. And you can be sure that if I like it I'll buy it, cause I buy a helluva lot of CDs.

Sweet Jehovah! You guys are making much ado about nothing. If you want to take Jon's advice and buy the album for whatever reason, do it. If not, don't buy it, but please keep your moral stances to yourself (nobody's forcing you to do anything, right?). The rest of us are dying to hear more insider scoop on the album and might not get the honor to do so if you offend our speaker/source.
