Ok, messieurs et mesdames. Beatles won the last round of the 60's best band by knock-out, but it was a little bit foreseeable.
Now let's a argue about the 70's: which is the best band, or artist of this decade according to you? and WHY?
Pink Floyd, Bowie, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, The Rolling Stones, Roxy Music, The Modern Lovers, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Ramones, Iggy Pop, The Stooges, Lou Reed, Joy Division, Television, Queen, The New York Dolls, King Crimson, The Buzzcocks, Bauhaus... or others?

Like Mike Watt and Eddie Vedder was singing: "The kids of today should defend themselves from the 70's, it's not reality".
I used to listen Genesis 70's era albums a lot (Foxtrot, Selling England By the Pound, The Lamb lies Down On Broadway...), before I turned into real Rock n'Roll, I was 15, and it was good as I started to take care of the quality of sound, of the sound of each instrument. Nowadays, I don't listen anything from the 70's, as most of bands started to use loads of synths, had ridiculous clothes, and were doing endless songs. I used to listen some Clash songs that were Ok, but I'm not really into the 77's punk thing.
I vote for Neil Young, I only own three CD, and i do not consider myself a fan, but I really like all the songs.

Top 5 songs, best band of the 60's...70's, top 100 albums.
All way too difficult.
Someone help us out! Where would a 'Rock Writer' begin? What criteria should we use? Should it be a band that put out its best work in the 70's? Go ahead, go get crucified!
Speaking of Rock Writers, I saw a comment on the book Kill Your Idols. I'm too old, too set or too fragile to read a scathing tirade on Exodus (there aren't enough WMDs in the world to aim at such a reviewer, even if it is just for fun), has anyone read it? |

This is awfully tough. I'll say Bowie nevertheless. Then come Kraftwerk, The Ramones, The Clash, Roxy Music, and Talking Heads.

This one is difficult, because I would choose a lot of them, but I would say that David Bowie, Lou Reed, The Fall, The Clash and lots af them...

Wow, this is a tricky one. I have no idea. Maybe Rolling Stones or The Clash.

oh man, this is hard.
I forget, is the best band decided by how much it gave to society and the music world because of its involvement, or just personal tastes?
I love all those bands mentioned, with the exceptionn of Stones & king crimson, & Bauhaus....
The Modren Lovers are spectacular. Lou reed is a god...ah, I could go on and on.
Suddenly realised I like more bands from the 70s than any other era really.

I like Pink Floyd, Bowie, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, The Modern Lovers, The Clash, Lou Reed and Queen(Although I consider Queen an 80's phenomenon). Also I like Eagles, ELO, Bee Gee's, that terrorist with long beard (I can't remember his name), Steve Miller Band and many others.
But, being honest, my vote goes to Fleetwood Mac (If you accept them as a 70's band)

You like Cat Stevens and can't remember his name... And come on! Queen were much better in the 70's, and the Mac were better in the 60's.

That was trying to be a joke.
I still don't know what's a XX's band. Are we talking about their best years, about the foundation year or (my opinion) the decade where (when?) they fit better?

Just tell us which band produced the best songs and best albums of this decade, according to you, no matter if the band started in the sixties or ended in the eighties, or if they were better in 1968 than in 1972. I was just asking about the music that've been made in between 1970 and 1980.

My two favourites are probably Queen and T-Rex. Queen's music of the '70's is so much better than the mulch that followed, and T-Rex were just brilliant. Songs like One Inch Rock, Metal Guru and Get It On are still fabulous today. |

Yeah, I know, they've been around for four decades.
The albums Muswell Hillbillies and Preservation make my case, dammit.

Can I cheat and say that Zepplin is the best band and Bowie is the best "artist"? Why is this so hard? |

I'll vote the Clash (with Bowie and the Ramones close behind), but Bob Dylan also belongs on that list. |

Sparks attempted 80% of what was good and fun about 70s rock and pop music. And 90% of the time, they did it better than anyone else.
And their first album, from 1972, is unique and ageless enough that it could pass for a startlingly fun indie rock record from 2004. |

Sparks AND Queen were great bands and I owe Queen a lot of things and a lot of respect -I started playing guitar because of Queen and Led Zeppelin, and Freddy is definitely one of my fav singers of all times- but if I must say that they produced only great albums during the 70's, I also must say that I think that they've been a lot influenced by bands like T.Rex, by Bowie and by the Sparks, in fact, Queen used to open for the Sparks in England when they weren't famous. If you listen to the first Lp's of the Sparks, you hear that there's a lot of similarities with the Queen songs, in the sound, the arragements, the singing, the guitars.
