Some say that video games are merely entertainment and that they couldn't possibly be considered to be art.
But gaming has changed vastly over the last decade or so.
Storylines are just important as graphics and gameplay in today’s games. Some manage to transcend even the most ambitious art-house movie.
Take, for example Ico. I have yet to hear anyone slate this game. Critics rave about it as a life changing experience in gaming. It was even given a re-release after four years.

It's definitely not your average hack-and-slash button-basher. It's a relaxing and satisfying game.
I feel that games industry is becoming more like the film industry. You can go and seem a movie with plenty of explosions and guns or you can go see an indie movie about love, life, etc. The same applies to games. More and more games tend to have an overall meaning as opposed to just schlock tales {One underlying themes in Metal Gear Solid 2 was the importance of the preservation of history}

Your views?
If you do think games are art, which ones?
If you don't, why not?

Well, a lot of great artistry goes into the really stylish games. Like the latter Final Fantasy series.

I was just thinking about that cartoon recently. I remember it not being very funny, like they'd do pisstakes of things like Apocalypse Now and it was suppossed to be funny merely because they were doing a take-off. At least, that's what I remember. I only saw it a couple of times.

The cartoon was pretty poo, not a patch on the game or the comics.

Considering the amount of times i've heard people call video games "childish" i was expecting more opposition to the notion.
But it seems pretty unanimous.

You wouldn't be saying that if i used an 8-hit turbo-combo on you, and then used my infinity blade to sap your life source. This would increase my dignity points and give my access to bonus items

I guess it depends on your definition of Art, what's yours?

Here we go again...

My definition of art (isn't it everyone's ?) :
The conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the senses.

already had this discussion with me? noooooooooo...

mmm I can't say I agree with that, it's too vast. It includes too much things that have nothing to do with Art, like pornography, industrial products, food (and fast foods), advertising, cottage industry... and thousands of other things that the human beings product to affect their senses.

But well, it's just my opinion, and Art is a very subjective concept.

I presume lonely persuader is being facetious (since clearly s_wrenn is) so I'll leave that alone for a while.

For anyone that would argue that all video games are not art, one need only look at a game like Myst or Grim Fandango or ... <the list continues>. I'm not saying that every first person shooter (or even many of them) are art, but there are games that reach deeper and have a wholly undefinable substance to them. That they are interactive does not somehow irretrievably revoke this status from them, and I would only accept the argument as logically consistent (though illogical in my mind) from someone who also thinks there is no art in cinema, music, paint, or writing.

Every game is a blend of those four properties, in varying degrees and with varying success.

i guess you have to talk about 'what is art?' if you're going to ask this question...

i don't play video games too much but i don't see why they shouldn't be considered art

I find myself doing the same thing, danjersey. I was playing Max Payne for the PC awhile back and I had a cheat code for invincibility. I was up on top of a skyscraper in the last level, trying to shoot down a tower to destroy Mona Sax's helicopter, and I fell off the building. Normally, the player isn't supposed to be able to survive the fall, but to my surprise I did because of the cheat code. All of the things that had looked so realistic from a thousand feet up above were now just basic, simple polygons. I was able to run around and found that the buildings were culled (a 3d term referring to what part of an object gets rendered) around back. And if I kept running in a straight line, I was able to run off the ground plane completely and into nothingness, until finally the game killed me when I ran outside of the bounding box. It was pretty cool, in an "I-have-no-life" kind of way. Just a little area of the game where I guess the developers never intended anyone to go.

My original post was directed toward the question that titles this thread topic. No, video games are not art. I will rue the day when universities mention Mortal Combat and Michelangelo's David in the same Art History class.

Intellectually, chess is pong's superior. However, I personally love a game of pong. Dean, you and I live about 33 hours away from each other. Some day, we will meet in person. Then, we will play a game of pong. Then, I can cross you off my "FBF Members Whom I Still Need to Meet and With Whom I Still Need to Play Pong" list.
