At the general demand, I hWolsky start a topic about the biggest mystery in popular rock: U2.
How and Why this band that sounds like everything and anything particular have such a response over the masses?
What can they find attractive with Bono? His voice, his general shape, his embarassing behaviour on stage. His pretention. His political and 'activist' involment. What does it really mean? His comments about things, and before all his shades....
Give me please your opinion and feelings about the planest man in popular music culture after... Sting.

First of all, I wouldn't compare Bono with Sting... And Iwhy do people like him? Maybe because masses are just like that...music is full of examples of how such thing can happen.
I can't stand the U2!!!

I have a passionate hate towards bono. Som much so he doesnt deserve a capital letter for his so called name.
I had the egotistical love himself aura he reeks. i really hate him.
then again with so much admiration, for someone whos just plain, and average, i guess he would get big headed.
talkig about him makes me ill

you are all terribly wrong.
bono is great.
why ?
because, and now listen carefully, he is the only one in music business who recognized the (very simple) truth about the pixies-hype.
"...not only they are one of americas finest bands, but there
IS ALSO ONE OF AMERICAS GREATEST SONGWRITERS EVER".
(pixies-doc.)
when other musicians/music journalists try to explain the magic of the pixies, what do we hear: sooo influental, loud/silent-dynamics, screaming & singing, david lynch, kurt cobain, stories about incest/ufos/surrealists/, indpendent rock, surf & punk & pop, BLA BLA BLA BLA BULLS**T !! those are all people who obviously have no idea of music despite that they make a living out of it. i think that is depressing.
only bono vox speaks the simple truth, which is that C.K.Thompson IV is an awesome songwriter. and he should get a lot of respect for that.

Wow! I never expected so much hate towards that bloke... i'm impressed. It is my first reactive thread!
An interesting fact. You may know that one year after the tour with Pixies, the Velvet Underground opened for u2 for their reunion tour. Strangely enough, this tour was also a desaster for the band who could not solve their problems (actually it was the old Reed/Cale axiom) and who in the end was bloody boring to open for u2. It lead to the second and final split of the Velvets. What a waste. Doesn't it remind another story?
Apparently u2 has a very bad influence over Great rock bands.
Please if you have a future or a past, DO NOT open for u2.

The concert will probably (OK, certainly) suck and the tickets are 58€ each (just checked on ebay, they're sold at about 150€), but my friends are going and Mrs Denis likes the band. I don't care about Bono, no hate or love. They actually have a couple of above average songs IMO (can't remember any name. Oh yeah, Discotheque is cool, and The Fly too. Everything they did before 1990 truly sucks though)

Two reelers, I know what you mean, but he also thinks that the 'civilised' countries should solve the third world dept, which is good to think too, that the world is unfair...yes it's true, that we should dismantle bombs, have flowers in our hair... etc, etc... He is complaisant, nothing more. he wants to be the universal good honest rockin' man, who's cool. Yes it is so cool to love the Pixies, so original.... bla bla bla.
He is fake and pretencious, and before all a BAD PERFORMER!!!!

You do realise that by starting this thread, this discussion, you are giving Bozo exactly what he wants. More exposure.
That said, I still think One And With Or Without You are great songs. The rest you can take away and burn. |

but their last few albums seemed to be a critical success from what i've read (not much)
i've heard a few of the songs and they're doing nothing original or inspired, but the majority just seem to love them. they can't seem to do know wrong. didn't they say their latest album is one of their best? could be wrong, but if it's true, they're kidding, right?
we're U2, we can write and rip-off whatever we want, and because it's us, worship it. it's the best fucking album you're ever gonna hear in your lifetime.

Although I can admire a bassist who built the last decade of his career off the Breeders´ Cannonball, U2 I find meh to the extreme of mehness. They make lots of noise while saying very little and yuck talk about slick. A writer called Douglas Rushkoff compared their concerts to Nazi rallies in terms of empty manipulative spectacle - I saw them in Dublin on the Popmart tour and Rushkoff put it pretty succinctly. And a friend of mine was at a wedding and Bono being one of the guests got up to belt out a couple, apparently without effects he cannot sing, just like Anthony Kiedis (though I like him).

Didn't Bono recently get nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize? I fear this will make his ego even bigger....if that's possible.
Check out this funny article for a little U2 bashing from Maddox.

I hate U2 and Bono. I'm sure that anyone who has any taste feels the same way.
My Boyfriend has seen bono a few times up close and swears that he is short, about 5'6, which explains a few things.
Also, i'm sure that he has ginger hair. He has always dyed it but recently its looking much more ginger. |

Just to flip the coin.....to see some reaction/responses....
U2 has been around for a very long time. Most bands don't make it past an album or 2 now. So back in the 80s, they sounded different in comparison to other top 40 type of stuff.
I've also heard Bono say that his pretentiousness and stage presence is a persona, like Ziggy Stardust. He wanted to create the ultimate rock star persona.
Also I don't know a ton about his political activism, what's wrong with it?

I don't mind U2 at all.
Hype is a media thing, not a band thing, and I would no more dislike (or love) a Frank Black album because it was panned/praised by everyone than I would condemn U2 (or Franz or Arcade Fire or...) as a result. It's music.

Back in the 80's U2 were a very welcome alternative to the crap that was being fed to us through the airwaves. I reallu enjoyed U2 for quite a while. That being said I don't realy see the attraction for their music these days. October, War, Boy, unforgettable fire , the joshua tree. Those are great albums. U2 live a red rocks what's the album with One on it? That was good too.
I think it really started to go all down hill with that POP album. That's when he showed up with those glasses.

I had to put that straight, even though I dicpise Bono(massive sell out stadium tours, huge record sales, siezable personal fortunes and all he can do is get on his soap box and preach sound bites and organize photo ops with some African children. I want to see all his money actually doing something, how much do a pair of his DG shades cost, €300, he makes me sick), plus,as Dave said, the Pixies tour with them was the final nail in the coffin for them.

I'm in the camp that they aren't that bad. They use to be a good band and their music today isn't terrible. How many mainstream bands or acts are better than them? That's faint praise, I know.
Also, I think Bono has shown himself to be commited to his causes. He has continued to work on them and has built up some credibility. I don't think he should have to denounce all of his worldly possesions before he can admired or respect his efforts. |

i'm kinda with darwin on this one. i don't mind them at all, don't rave about them either. they put on a pretty good live show and they always bring great support acts (with the exception of utah saints, WTF?). i saw sugarcubes, public enemy (minus flavor flav cause he couldn't get into canada) and u2 in one night for $40, not bad. i saw them in scotland 9 months later with stereo mc's (i don't care what you say they were fun), and the utterly shite utah saints.
they will be warming up in vancouver and i know the fellow that is their local P.A. so i guess i'll know when and where those secret warm-up gigs are. actually i think they get in this week...

My, this is almost blasphemy. One cannot compare this little funny man with Ziggy Stardust. Bowie was BEAUTIFUL, simply beautiful. He moved like an actor, sang like an angel (or reverse). Only characters like him could pretend to ULTIMACITY (?) He was a Nietsche Superman, and could have been a fantastic political leader.
To resume this discussion that make me a hot little potatoe right now, Bono is ugly because he is not beautiful while behaving like he is.
