Oh yeah. Louisville is home sweet home - don't live there anymore, but we were just there this past weekend. What do you like to do? Coolest bar we've found these days is Cahoots an Bardstown road. They are in the spot that most of the local bands were born from, and it still carries that feel. There's an industrial/hip hop split club (weird huh?) on main street just east of 1st street. The Magnolia Bar at 4th and Magnolia is another good watering hole with a good jukebox and pool tables. Wick's pizza is an old school hangout just down the street from Cahoots. If you stick to Bardstown road between downtown and Taylorsville road there are shops, restaurants, etc. I'll try to track down some live music calendars as the music scene there is usually pretty active. I think we might just move back there soon.

16th largest city in the US...learned that when I was there doing some training last year. just fyi.
[edit] my colleagues and i ate at Molly malone's irish pub down on baxter street==a cool college-type area with lots of bars,etc... here's the website. it was REALLY good! http://www.mollymalonesirishpub.com/index.html
if you're wanting to go to the louisville slugger factory, plan on going early--we weren't able to go b/c our seminar didn't let out until 5 and the plant had already stopped the tours by then...more fyi. |

I hope you have a great time Brian! SpudBoy and I really miss that town.
If you like going to cool galleries/glass-making foundries etc, you might want to check out downtown. Lots of nice architecture there too, while you're at it. Here's a list of downtown galleries: http://www.trolleyhop.com/galleries.html
the Gallery Hop (or Trolley Hop) would be cool to check out, but that's the first Friday of every month (3/4/05)
The Frasier Arms Museum is absolutely amazing. Massive, and very well laid out: http://www.frazierarmsmuseum.org/
The world's largest Louisville Slugger (baseball bat) is also down there at the Louisville Slugger museum (plus some other cool baseball stuff), if you're into that sort of thing. http://www.sluggermuseum.org/flash5.html
If you like old train trestle bridges ;), stop by my all-time favorite structure, the Big Four Bridge (aka "the bridge that goes nowhere") - it's near the waterfront park, you can take lots of cool pics from there. Good view of the Ohio River too, with a nice walking trail along the river.
Also, The Falls of the Ohio (you gotta cross over into Indiana though - ugh ;)) "The 386-million-year-old fossil beds are among the largest naturally exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world." http://www.fallsoftheohio.org/ Very cool. I think you can still walk all over the place on that fossil bed.
If you like skateboarding, there's a cool skate park downtown, can't miss it from the expressway/Spaghetti Junction - open and lit 24/7.
For food, you gotta try Lynn's Paradise Cafe http://www.lynnsparadisecafe.com/ It's a classic. Giant pouring tea pot in front, manequin legs coming out of the walls and other miscellania inside. Again, can't miss it.
If you like Irish pubs (with good authentic meals and wonderful beer and whiskey choices there's the Irish Rover at 2319 Frankfort Ave., Louisville, KY, 502-899-3544 try the 20 yr Pappy Van Winkle if you'd like to sample the best ever Kentucky bourbon)
Music shopping (huge selection): Ear Xtacy http://www.earx-tacy.com/
Underground Sounds (great vinyl) (502) 485-0174 2003 Highland Ave
Better Days Music (heard they're going out of business, been doing 50% off on everything for about a week now) (502) 774-9909 2600 W Broadway Ste 104
Food and music: http://www.therudyardkipling.com/pages/206997/
Live music guides: http://www.louisvillemusicindex.org/
A good local radio station: http://www.wfpk.org/
There are a ton of great restaurants, and plenty of cuisines. Some standouts below.
Cafe Kilimanjaro (great African) 649 S Fourth St., Louisville, KY, 502-583-4332
Mexican: Los Aztecas 530 W. Main St., Louisville, KY, 561-8535
Jicama Grill (Cuban/Latino) 1538 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40205, 502-454-4383, "Trendy restaurant that specializes in wonderful South American cuisine with the influences of Cuba and Mexico. Items on the menu include ceviches, camarones con ajo, baked shrimp, and blue corn tortilla soup. They are open daily for lunch and dinner."
Pacific Rim: http://www.asiatique.bigstep.com/?
more restaurants: http://www.discoverourtown.com/TownPage.php?Town=244&Cat=Dining
Wild and Woolly Video Hard to find movie rentals/store (cult/indie/classic/anime/experimental/sploitation/etc), owned by Slint's former bassist, Todd Brashear. Cool place: http://www.wandwvideo.com/
Cave Hill Cemetery is one of the most beautiful places to visit. http://www.cavehillcemetery.com/ (I know, I'm a little weird) also, there's the Speed Museum for more art, if you're interested. http://www.speedmuseum.org/
Twice Told Bookstore Best used bookstore with best proprietor ever (imho), Harold. He has first edition signed stuff, some of it for sale, if you ask. He was good friends with Allen Ginsberg. Interesting conversations if you catch him in the right mood. Also a neat selection of vinyl (great Jazz) http://www.twicetold.com/
I'm out of gas hehe. Let me know if you have any cuisines, types of clubs, or any interests in particular. |

Of course you do!
Louisville is the nation's best kept secret.
I should move there.
I mean, you can have a shit job and no friends anywhere, why not do it in a place where there are more things to do while your life ebbs away, second by second, year by year...hey, is that a used book store? |

I've just unfolded my USA roadmap - planning the next one.
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

If we've moved back by the time you visit, I'd be happy to be y'all's tour guide. I'd make you my spicy shrimp etouffee too -it's been known to make noses sweat and endorphins surge. heehee
I forgot, there's a great BBQ ribs place: Gib's Smokehouse and Grill 2224 Dundee Road, 451-5154. SF. This popular Highlands spot continues its walk on the spicy side of the mainstream, with its "Bottled Hell" hot-pepper sauce and favorites including the Cajun chicken wings, Creole shrimp and chicken, blackened grilled-tuna salad, peel- and-eat shrimp and other haute bar food. And could I have some of those fresh- cut fries? Hours: Sun.-Thurs., 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m., Fri.-Sat., 11:30 a.m.- midnight.
- I hope you do move there, KSR, that would be awesome. |

Thank you all so much for the contributions! However, now my supervisor is going because I have to attend this other thing.
BUT I will make sure to print this thread and give it to him so he'll have some stuff to do!
I really appreciate the efforts!

Yeah, that sucks. I hate it when work travel plans are so damned haphazard.
SpudBoy might be going to London for work for two days, sometime next week, no idea when, or when he'll find out. Same old same old.
I hope you can have a good time in your one day. If you have any questions feel free to email me. I'd be happy to help.
