In a collective push to get our song db as chock full of information as possible, we're going to experiment with posting a new song every couple days to the forum. This is where you come in. If you know anything about the song (or are interested in trying to find out through some skilled sleuthing) then the idea is that you post your knowledge (with source if possible). If it's conjecture, that's great too (just please label it as such), because it'll help get people talking.
El Barto, the Song DB Master, will then take what elements he can from the thread and put them into the db. It should be full of tidbits in no time!
What sort of information are we looking for? Anything that gives insight into the song's meaning, creation, etc for one. As well, interesting nuggets of information.
Examples:
- Descriptions of (possible) song references
- Quotes from FB or other notables on the song
- Definitions to words you think might not be immediately obvious
If you're not sure about something, post and ask! You may jog someone's memory. |

Nadine
Available on: Show Me Your Tears [Album - September 9, 2003] Show Me Your Tears [Promo - 2003]
Lyrics: There goes Nadine Head to toe in black There goes Nadine Head to toe in black When I see Nadine I want that
Will she let me in Underneath here clothes? Will she let me in Underneath her clothes? That girl got skin Like a ghost
Oh I think that witchy lady Been cooking up some spells ‘Cause when she walks on by You know I love The way she smells
She has a big gray car She could take me for a ride She has a big gray car She could take me for a ride Maybe we’ll park And I’ll drive
There goes Nadine (x5) Nadine

Let the comments begin:
Does anyone remember if there was an actual connection made between Nadine and the girl in Subbacultcha? Or was that conjecture?

Incidentally, I'm not sure if it's possible, but I think that the write up he did for Cooking Vinyl needs to be on the album page for SMYT:
I found a nice space in Hollywood to put my studio up for a while, and that's where we recorded Show Me Your Tears. It's actually a working studio; the owner of the building let us take over the second floor. It's got big windows, and we look out on sad, beautiful, ugly, smoky Los Angeles. I don't know if the location has influenced the songs, but it felt right to do the songs there. Also, I've been going to therapy. Take out your big knife, doc, and split me right down the middle of my chest, from my neck to my belly. See my heart muscle right here? Pumping and full of electricity. Take that knife and split my skull open. See the brain about to explode? The doctor said I'm not interested in your damn brain; you got a big broken heart? Big deal. I'm not interested in your heart, SHOW ME YOUR TEARS! And so here they are. Thirteen big, salty tears. Like thirteen little black dogs just born, still in their sacs, about to wake up, ready to howl at the world. There isn’t a happy song in this bunch. I mean, maybe MASSIF CENTRALE has a ray of hope, but even then, I don't know, central France can be really cold and lonely. Maybe NADINE is a sexual celebration, but man, I get so sad when I think about her, way back when, ah fuck, whatever happened to me and her? So maybe you'll like this record. May I suggest a single malt scotch, straight up, as an aperitif? Then drink cold, red wine throughout, and then forget about the digestive; put the record on again and go look for that bottle of scotch. You're never going to like one of my damn records if you only listen to it once.
Man, it is freezing around here.

Gosh, what is there to add? Frank's write-up is brilliant. The Man slays me. I have no insights here, just my opinion that we're off to a good start with this great-sounding idea to beef up the db. Thank you.

What's your source on that, Holiday Son?
Nadine and Jean do rhyme...
I don't want to speculate about these things (and I am not saying that HS is).

I guess it's pretty much official that the girl in subbacultcha is Jean. And the lyrics from Nadine makes me think it's her as well. Sorry, no official word from Frank that I can remember. |

I've never understood this. No one drinks red wine cold. Red wine is best at room temperature.

Yep, you are right about the best temp to drink red wine, Jason. Maybe Frank would like to swing by a forum party and we could discuss the right temperature for wine or any other topic.

Wow, C_O_F, this is great. Thanks for soliciting our input. I can't wait to read what gets posted here.
At this point, all I can do is Ditto what Kathryn said, "Gosh, what is there to add? Frank's write-up is brilliant." And, I agree, his write up would be an excellent addition to the album page for SMYT.
Seeing this topic just reminded me that I need to pay my FB.net dues. I've got paypal, but haven't used it for anything other than Ebay. I'll figure it out and send in my dues. Keep up the great work here. It doesn't go unappreciated, as I'm sure you know.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I just recently picked up the UK Nadine single and SNAKE OIL is my new favorite song. The Man really screams, yells, shouts, and otherwise sings his ass off on this one. LUDWIDSHAFEN will probably be my next new favorite song, but I'm not ready to move on yet. |

There are some red wines that are served cold (around 10°C). Some Beaujolais for instance. However Frank's favorite, the Chateauneuf-du-Pape, is best served at room temperature (around 17°C). (no, I don't know anything about wines, I googled this)

There's an interview in german where he speaks alot about the songwriting-process regarding SMYT. But my german is bad. Very bad. Maybe someone could translate (are there any germans here?, or maybe the dutch members could do it?). Anyway, my poor understanding of the statements about nadine is something like this: i think he is being asked about the personalities he crowds his songs with, and he says something like: "nadine is a character, but the song is about me and my interaction with these nadines (i think it is plural) and their influence on me.

room temperature when wine was first being made was probably a lot lower than it is now. imo, anything colder tastes better anyway, so i quite like chilled red wine. |

I always thought the girl on "Subbacultcha", "Is she weird", "Nadine" and "Horrible Day" was Jean.
Girls dressed in black, I guess.
PS: Only my personal opinion, no database value here.

don't know how usefull this is but this is what some other people had to say about it...
maybe not usefull for the db as such but might get a few more people chipping in with what they think about it...
“Black gets things off to a rollicking start with "Nadine", a song with as much boom-kaboom femme-fatale low-end shimmy as anything he's ever written. Full of lascivious thoughts about its pale-skinned goth goddesss namesake, "Nadine" never clues you in to whatever sadness the subject holds for Black. That's a hallmark of Show Me Your Tears: Black's opening up, but keeping his cards close to his chest.” – popmatters
“Frank's had his heart broken all right. But instead of bleeding all over you, he's patched it together with sawdust and string and written these thirteen bits of rough magic in memory of Nadine, Lorraine or "misfortune in her stockings," whoever she may be. It's haunted, cinematic stuff, but it's closer to Tarantino than Lynch – there's a cool cynicism leavening the visionary regret and the songs sizzle with careful rhyme and dirty rhythm.” – Counterculture
“you cannot imagine the excellent "Nadine" without the straight-backed interplay of bass, guitar and drums, the band's restraint -- and eventual release -- putting the sex into the cut.” – splendid magazine
“Whether the frustration in Nadine is fuelled by a new affair or past desire is never clear, but the sassy, mod bassline and Black's low, passionate voice conjure up a unbearable tension” – The Guardian
and I love the official quote from the website too, love it

I'd say that quotes from reviews are more suited to the ill-fated article db, but those are all great pulls. "Sawdust and strings" = great imagery.

ivandivel, your translation is pretty accurate. He is talking about only one Nadine, though.
In that article, asked about the albumtitle, Frank talks about how life confronts you with real pain at times and how that pain was a source of inspiration for him. "Everything on that album happend at the time I recorded it."
Then comes the quote. My quick attempt in translating it:
But does this process change the perception itself? For example concerning the Frank-created personalities, that inhabit his songs? “I don`t know”, Frank thinks, “take ´Nadine´ for example – that’s a character, but the song is more about me and my interaction with this Nadine and her influence on me. I´ve always done it like that, though."

Looks good guys. Conjecture and opinion is great, but what ultimately will make it into the DB has to be fact. Please state sources, names, and dates if possible. For examples, check through the song DB.

Yes VV, I think Jean is the character of Death in that song. He's talking about their divorce, isn't he? Or maybe I'm being simple minded...

Black said that among other things, the standout song from Show Me Your Tears, Nadine, was influenced by Ray Davies of the Kinks.
"I listen to a lot of old stuff rather than new stuff - actually I don't think I listen to any new stuff," Black told BBC World Service's The Music Biz programme.
"The past is where it's at as far as I'm concerned."

ok, not relevent but so cute! from the same article:
"The guy who dry-cleans my suits, he didn't understand all the salt stains on the suits. He said, 'your suits have been wet.' I said, 'well I play in a band.' He said, 'oh champagne' - imagining that we were pouring bottles of champagne over our heads every night.

I don't think Jean is the one dressed in black. I haven't heard that kind of malice (comparing her to the Grim Reaper) towards her. Death is just coming to take his marriage away. |

This has all been great, I think we're going to have a kickass database of stuff when we're through. Thanks for the heads-up on that missing single, Jason.
