okay, back to the punk rock thang............i will share some more OPINIONS, SUGGESTIONS...........(got that? no one's saying "punk is this" I think what we all agree on is that these terms get harder and harder to define)
but when i was a pre-teenager and my brother played the sex pistols for me, and i heard them spoofing frank sinatra and their album covers had that chopped-up, made on a xerox machine look to them, well, that was punk rock. that was the first punk rock, at the time when punk rock was born. and there were other bands like them and everyone knows the rest- the l.a. scene, and the london scene, and the new york scene, etc. and yeah, it became a look too, with the safety pins and the mohawks.
so then, in the early nineties here i was working in a vegetarian restaurant with a lot of musicians and people my age and younger than me and i heard the term "punk rock" being thrown around, and up until that point i thought that punk rock had been held in a time capsule- that it only belonged to the sex pistols and the dead kennedys and the original bands from back in the day. but now it was a post- modern age, and who knew that these bands had influenced so many people. so punk rock came to be defined as an aesthetic- stripped-down, LOUD mostly, anti- establishment, and also reflecting a DIY ethic.
so here we are, 2004, and we find ourselves in a post- post- post (exponentially) modern age, and punk is in again, officially, and the media and the record companies and clear channel have packaged it. and since packaging usually involves changing history, or neglecting it in order to create a clear image, things get confused and changed. ever notice how the most "punk" sounding and feeling bands look very little like the media's contrived image of punk? would you call frank black punk? does he look punk? you tell me.
that clear anything up, or make it more confusing?
p.s. no accident that the pixies are reuniting NOW. the time is ripe. |
