If the Devil is 6 and God is 7, there are bands who think the Pixies are 8 and started up just to scream about monkeys going to heaven, broken faces and debasers. Black Francis pulled the plug on the Pixies during a BBC radio show on January 13th, 1993. A decade later, Brooklyn's Douglas Leader pays tribute at the Galapagos Art Space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Strikes Again! (Manhattan) and The Bennies (Harrisburg, Pa.) round out the bill. Strikes Again! play rock that sounds more like the Pixies, while The Bennies play rock that sounds more like the solo work of former Pixies' frontman Frank Black, who the Bennies opened for at the Bowery Ballroom and Warsaw last November. Strikes Again! will be covering 30 or so songs from all the Pixies records but Bossanova, while the Bennies will rock through their own material. The Bennies would qualify themselves if just for the quote on their website: "I like the Bennies"-Frank Black. Douglas Leader will cover the Pixies' 1990 album Bossanova in its entirety, but with horns. It’s this Saturday! The cover is $7.00, but the fun to be had is priceless!
