Does anybody think that Drums a Go Go by Sandy Nelson(60's Surf pop drumming God) has the exact same intro as FB's Two Spaces and they sound even more alike on FB's Live in Paris record?

Just thought I heard Charles saying something about Sandy Nelson years ago on MTV when people got to ring in and ask him stuff(back in the day when MTV Europe had some creditbalty), with the Pixies covering the Surftones and almost covering the Shadows, just wondering if anybodyelse had some insight!!!!!!

I was forced to do meditation instead of Geailge with an Irish teacher who had the shakes from smoking too much dope(and that was in a Christian Brothers school as well)!, it's a great fuping system!

Did any of the lovely gentle folk of Eire(or any where else for that matter) see the big man at Witness or Vicar St about two or three years ago? I was very impressed when he played Dirty Ould Town at Witness.

i did go to witnness - it was great. loved it so much - and nice to see feeder and teenage fanclub plugging his gig (albeit the latter were after him and commended his performance). didnt get tickets to vicar street as it sold out too fast... but heard it was great. dirty old town was indeed special... but i dont think i will ever forget where is my mind closing the gig. wow! come back soon frank.
cheers

Hey Bazza, I could'nt believe he played so many Pixies songs, there were about four or five of them! I got kicked in the head about ten times from people crowd surfing but I was so in awe of the man himself that I did'nt really notice. But I have to say I didnt recognize most of the set list because I only had only gotten up to Pistolero at that point. Thanks Ramona, youfuckingdie! is great name! why did'nt I think of that! And the next you thing know!

interesting to see he did play so many. however - as i had bought DITS the previous month and listened to it like mad i had to admit the versions of robert onion, hermaphroditos and - especially - bullet did the trick for me. it was a great outro - and the fact that everyone stayed to the end (and didnt leave for placebo)is a testament to the great man. class act and rich gilbert was awesome too.

Since this is about surf music...
Anybody here seen or like Dick Dale (the King of the Surf Guitar mentioned in The Man Who Was Too Loud)? I've seen him 3 times now and he rocks for a guy who was initially popular in the early 60's!!
I'd recommend that everyone see him when he's in your area.

Three times? You lucky guy! I feel certain that Dick would never travel to a locale as land-locked as mine. (Although I have gotten to see The Man Who Was Too Loud 3 times--JoJo goes everywhere!) I have that big Surf box set that Rhino put out a few years ago and I love the stuff. Do you have any Dick Dale albums that you recommend in particular? A lot of the stuff I've checked out has been sort of cheesy K-Tel kinds of things that weren't compiled very well, so if you have any suggestions, fire away.

Okay, but what the heck is surf rock exactly?

Anyone care to give / point to a quick introduction for an ignoramus who doesn't know a Telecaster from a surfboard?

No kidding. I would be grateful.

Hey, mabye you guys can help with my James Joyce book. He is on a totally different level then me. Surf Rock, yeah, I hope you guys have heard the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. Tis' pretty cool. I can't remember anybodies name right now. I also highly recommend the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. It doesn't have much surf rock, but man, it is super.

Yes Jediroller, the Replacements do rock, but "Sorry Ma" is probably one of the most poorly recorded albums I've ever heard.

Oh, and also, why does it seem like one week I left and certain members had so many posts and I come back next week and certain members have like a few hundred more posts?

From ze fabulous Rhino Surf Box:

"Surf Music n. (1961): American music developed from 1961 to 1963 esp. from rock n' roll, rhythm & blues, and pop vocal group harmony styles and characterized by sound (such as echo or reverberation effects on guitars), form (instrumental or group harmony vocals, usually very danceable), or spirit (themes such as surfing, the ocean, or cars) syn. California Music, California Sound, West Coast Sound"

Does that help? Get you some Dick Dale or Ventures and rock out!

Therewererumours, in "The Man Who Was Too Loud" (an homage to Jonathan Richman, proto-punk who is now the world's most lovable goofball, aka JoJo) includes a reference to Dick Dale--King of the Surf guitar. ("You know I heard him (JoJo) open up for the king of the surf guitar.") JR is the man.
