So how come Frank doesn't get a gig opening up for Dylan sometime? As much as I enjoy seeing Frank play to 100 people at a time I think he's only preaching to the converted.
I told Frank outside the Lucky Dog in Worcester a couple years ago that he 'fucking rips' and that I didn't know how everyone didn't feel that way. He told me "yeah, the good stuff never sells."
Anyway- I'm at work and don't wanna get caught screwin' off...

As much as I'd like to see Frank get the cumulative acclaim he deserves there's nothing like an intimate gig, so I don't really think playing support to Dylan would be any great thing. As the saying goes 'whats big is bad'(and I don't mean that in terms of sales, rather in size of venue). I can't remember the last time I saw any band better their small venue gigs in a stadium. Nirvana playing the point depot in Dublin springs to mind, it didn't come close to their supporting sonic youth in the 'top hat' (an old bingo hall). I'd love to see FB sell more albums than Madonna, but I'd rather see him play multiple nights in an intimate venue than one in an enormodome. |

Did someone just say the Catholics were gonna be McCartney's new back up band? What about Chuck?

I saw him open for Pearl Jam at the United Center, and the crowd had no idea who he was until Wave of Mutilation, and even then it was just some hazy recollection.
I feel priveleged to see him in smaller places around town, where they can do what they want and have the support of the entire audience. |

I agree with meatpants.. If Frank wanted to seek out openning gigs, he would do so. Obviously, he must prefer making a pretty good living playing for his dedicated fan base. And I'm fine with that if he is.

I saw Frank open for U2 in '92, in Philly. Couldn't wait to leave after Frank got off stage. My g-friend at the time had a backstage pass. She didn't want to leave because U2 was up next. She also wouldn't let me borrow the pass so I could run and meet Frank. Fuck her, then we waited for two-hours to get a glimpse at Bono. I wanted to hit him with the fucking bottle I had in my hand; free beer. |

I suggested the idea of Frank gettin' a gig opening for Dylan and I knew it was going to ruffle feathers. I'm sure all of you (like myself) revel in the fact that Frank is our little secret. Hardly anyone knows about the guy.
I can't count how many times I've gone out and bought someone Teenager because I felt it was THAT important that they owned it. Surely, I'm not the only person in this discussion that has done that.
So what's so wrong with Frank opening for Dylan (an artist who's integrity cannot be questioned-Frank would agree with that,I'm sure) if the bottom line is more people will get to hear Frank? I'm not suggesting he sell his songs to ad agencies or anything. Sure it was great seeing him play to 150 people at the Lucky dog in Worcester, MA or at any of the other shows I've been to, but come on, shouldn't more people be exposed to him?
Is it that we have this instinct to keep him to just ourselves and maybe our close friends? I'm sure there are scores of people out there that know nothing about the Pixies or Frank that would love his music as much as we do.
I don't know how many of you have gone to a Dylan show but the people that go to them aren't there because of hype or because it's cool. People that go to Dylan shows go because it's really, really good stuff.
A few months ago I was talking to a good bud of mine about the two soon-to-be released Frank discs. I told him that I wasn't really too concerned whether the discs were gonna be any good. "I'd by a blank CD if Frank released one" I added.
Anyway, I know it's never going to happen- and I'm certainly cool with sharing Frank with just a few select others but I really think it's an injustice that music that good is kept to so few listeners.
So put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I read an interview w/ Paul Westerburg once where he says, "I called my friend Charles(Black Francis) from the Pixies and told him to never open up for someone like Sting." I guess Paul had opened for Tom Petty and the crowd just didnt get the Replacements, kinda like how the U2 crowd didnt get the Pixies. I heard that at some shows the house lights were still on when the Pixies were playing? any thruth to that? |

Why isn't Frank on Celebrity Fear Factor?
Campaigning for opening slots on big tours doesn't quite seem to be Frank's style. The Pearl Jam and U2 things are obviously examples of the headliners hand-picking the opening act. |

Frank opening up for Dylan would be way cool.
I think people are responding to your posts with the silly examples because the image of Frank campaigning for opening slots is amusing. It's not something most people can see him doing.
In other words, I imagine he'd have to be asked, rather than do the asking himself.
And I don't revel in the fact that Frank is "our little secret". Because he's not! Most anyone who seriously follows rock music knows who Frank Black is. A "little secret" would a band you saw play for a crowd of 8 people and whose records are hard to find.

I live in New Hampshire-pretty much nobody knows who Frank is around here. Pixies? Maybe they've heard the name. But Frank Black? no way.
If I lived somewhere where a lotta people knew about him I wouldn't be suggesting he open up for anybody. It's just my experience talking to regular people out there in the world that they don't know of him. |

I grew up in NYC, and even though I moved out to LI, I still work in the City. Personaly it feels like if I didn't play people the music or tell people of the Pixies or Frank Black nobody I know would know who they were. I still believe the people I know have bad taste in music.

Frank Black opened for Red Hot Chilli Peppers in Holland last year.
I saw him a couple of days before that concert and had the time of my life. But some friends of me, peppers-fans, went to see that concert with FB opening up, and they said to me things like this:
'The sounds was really bad, no good soundchecking' 'Nobody knew him' 'Pedal steel guitars? We're not really into that'
other people who saw that show (note: NOT my friends, but talked with them cause I was curious about what they thought about Frank):
'Frank Black? Frank Schmack! Nobody in the audience was having a good time, we just wanted to see the peppers'
I cannot defend Frank as I wasn't there, maybe he did play a bad show. But the piont is the crowd wasn't open minded at all, they want Red Hot-Funk and Chilli-Raps, not a genius like Frank.
One last thing, do you know about that vocal thing (Papadapapadapapapadappaaaaaaaaa!) Frank does before 'All my Ghosts'? Somebody told me Flea was making fun of that shout at the concert. He did it too, but in an arty-farty way.
The Bastard!
No one fucks with Frank!

For Grieves:
I guess from the feedback I've read and heard, having Frank split a bill with someone as big or bigger doesn't typically yield positive results, like it maybe should. I once actually heard a TMBG fan get all hissy and say "Yeah man, They Might Be Giants rocked, but Frank Black, man he sucks hard." It's pearls before swine.
