No idea, but here are some clues about how it's going on in France: last week BLD ranked #5 in the "indie" charts of one of the biggest chain record stores here (it's called FNAC). The chart went like this: 1) Coldplay, 2) Death In Vegas, 3) Beck, 4) RHCP, 5) Frank Black & The Catholics. Today I went back to the same store and the 2 albums were exposed at the top of the shelves with something like "Not to be missed" written above, and BLD was on one of the listening stations. So I guess it's selling well.

Exclaim! is a Canadian music publication that's pretty good, and their ratings this month are:
01 - Flaming Lips - Yoshimi 02 - Sonic Youth - Murray Street 03 - Spoon - Kill the Moonlight 04 - Sleater-Kinney - One Beat 05 - Pixies - S/T (Purple Tapes)
09 - FBatC - DW

Black Letter Days and Devil's workshop both cropped up around the 20-15 spots for a few weeks of the CMJ.com charts. |

Sounds like it's doing good in France, I haven't seen much as far as displays here in America, but I'm sure it's doing okay. |

The CDs are not doing much in Australia, but that's not suprising. Frank Black doesn't get much of a go in Oz. The only radio station that might play his songs is Triple J. I heard a few songs from DITS played, but nothing from his latest releases. No wonder the man don't come down here to tour. |

I don't know how they are both selling officially in the UK, but anecdotal comments suggest that they are not doing very well - or as well as they DESERVE to be selling |

I may be wrong, but it seems the NME didn't even review the new albums. At least they don't appear on nme.com . Well, maybe it's better like this, given the crappy reviews thay always do about Frank's albums...

I don't get NME anymore but I fear that you are right. Even the quality Sunday newspapers here - most of which reviewed Dog in the Sand favourably - did not even mention the albums. But the Guardian review was so bad (posted elsewhere) that I am almost glad they ignored them |

I think the only reason these albums didn't get as much press notice is that Frank is so prolific. So these releases might sort of slip under the radar, but just wait, and 2 years from now and the press will be covering him pretty thorougly again. I've noticed this with most bands who release at least an album a year (The Fall, Guided by Voices) for whatever reason, some albums just get more attention. It's sort of like a pattern. (i.e. didn't it seem like Pistolero got a lot less press than Frank Black and the Catholics?)
On that note, i just have to mention, after listning to both teh albums back-to-back today, just how thoroughly good they both are. I'm completey satisfied. I think i like the more recent incarnation of the Catholics more than the late '90s era one...even though it's pretty much the same guys, I just think the records/live shows are better.
okay, i'm done. |

I was checking NME.com in the run up to the albums being released and couldn't find any reviews, however I am pretty sure they would have reviewed the albums in the magazine but not on the Internet. I noticed that the album reviews weren't updated that often during this time as I was reading the same reviews for three weeks running.... anyway, it would have been a waste of time had I read then as NME are gobshites who don't know shit. Do you know that NME stands for 'Needs Musical Education.' That magazine isn't good enough to use for shitroll! |

NME is shit. Then again all of their decent writers now write for magazines like Mojo and Q! I thought that Dog in the Sand had changed Frank's fortunes for the better - he also got really good reviews for his last European tour and Reading went down well. But it was not to be - as you have said, some did not even bother to review these albums |

I bought one copy of each album so he's sold a couple in the US.
