Why, I have it right here (working on those lyrics, Barto!) It's mostly assorted B-sides and bonus tracks (except for Jumping Beans) that Frank re-mixed in 1997--as he says, "so here they are, some re-mixed oddballs." Santa brought it to me last xmas, but I hear that he ordered it from the W.A.R. website (www.whatarerecords.com). I must have been a very good girl indeed. Tracks are as follows, and I'll include Frank's notes on who he says he's "trying to be" on each cut:
Pray A Little Faster (trying to be Dylan) Oddball (trying to be Stones) Village of the Sun (trying to be Springsteen) Baby, That's Art (trying to be Bowie) At the End of the World (trying to be Bowie) Can I Get a Witness (trying to be Dylan) Announcement (trying to be Daltrey) Hate Me (trying to be Strummer) Remake/Remodel (trying to be Sahm) Everybody Got the Beat (trying to be Strummer) Jumping Beans (trying to be Lou) Just a Little (trying to be Me) You Never Heard About Me (trying to be Strummer) Man of Steel (trying to be Me)
He does a great job of evoking all of these folks while remaining his own inimitable self. Hope this helps. [/quote] |

I purchased my version at one of Frank's shows. It seems to me that some of the songs on Oddballs are different takes than the single versions. Does anybody know?
I'm sure your always a good girl mereubu. :) |

Yes, they are very different sometimes, other times, just a wee bit. I went through a lot of trouble to acquire the Cult of Ray bonus track cd and then the Men in Black single, which gave me pretty much all the 7 or so songs that got dumped off of COR. Naturally, a few weeks later Oddballs pops up and has all of them, but different sounding. It's my believe that Frank mixed them to sound like the Catholics stuff, he sort of takes the COR production vibe away from them, gives it more of a live feel. This is pretty cool, but sometimes I liked the first versions better, as in "Baby, That's Art" which sort of benefitted from the more classy production. But, It is kind of nice he remixed them, because I have the other versions already, so the "hardcore" collector is gettin' something new. And if you live on the East Coast, you can get Oddballs at Newbury Comics stores for 14 bucks. |

Thanks Itchload. That is what I thought. All of the Men In Black and Cult of Ray tunes do sound different. I wonder if some are just different actual takes and others are just remixes. At The End Of The World definitely sounds like a different run through the song.
