there's this english teacher at my high school. she teaches Shakespearean Readings. Apparently shes a huge pixies fan, and saw them in concert. I asked her if she was into the new frank black stuff and said she never really listened to much of it though didn't explain why. she did see him when he was touring for his solo cd though. anyway i thought it was pretty funny that this woman whose like 28ish i think just randomly likes the pixies and tells other people about them. She says "here comes my man" whenever she sees me in the hallway now, ahh isnt that soooo clever. - mike |

Man, i wish i had 28yr old teachers when i was in skool... Or even under twice that age..bleh..
28 would put her in a prime Pixies generation demographic, not surprising. Ask her what else she likes, you might be surprised. =)

Well, I don't know if it's "surprising," but I'd say one of my school sweethearts; we actually worked at a vet office together for a little while! smokin' cute ; - ) |

I go to the same school and have had a few comversations about music with her. She is a big flaming lips fan as well as Pavment, the Smiths and Beck.

http://www.leary.com/archives/photo/90s/thumbs/joey_ramone_frank_black.gif.gif That is a picture of frank black with Joey Ramone and Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary whose ashes have been shot into outer space and orbits the earth:

I think that photo is a fake. Although it is very amusing. I have posed for a photograph with Joey, but I don't remember ever posing with Leary. I would have remembered meeting him, even if I was high on LSD.

Wouldn't 28 put her in high school during the Pixies? I always thought the Pixies were more a college than high school band, but I was in Texas for high school and California for college. So, many things changed for me. |

maybe she looks 28 but is really 32. i got into the pixies when i was 11 personally but that was blind luck.
i was reading entertainment weekly one day and maura tierny or however you spell it listed the pixies and the replacements as her favorite bands. |

I would have to say my two daughters, Rebecca (6) and Erin (4) are a really nice surprise for me as far as fans go! They prefer FB&TC's over any other music, I swear! Rebecca sent me to Chicago with a picture she had drawn of the band, and I was able to give it to Dave Philips. I hope Frank actually saw it at some point. Hey Frank, are you and the guys into doing appearances at children's birthday parties?? Just kiddin' (but how cool would THAT be!!)

Hey Darwin - i started listening to music intensely when i was in high skool, so i guess it's sorta relative....that's when it started to kick in for me.
Especially songs with a good serving of angst and sexual weirdness. =)

Back in my day (acting like I'm real old) I was the cool kid (no one else knew it) who was listening to REM. I graduated high school in 1986. Like I said earlier I was in the backwoods of Texas.
I can imagine some kids in high school picked up the Pixes, but I still imagine it more often happened in college. |

I'm always surprised when I find out someone is a Frank Black fan. I bartend and occasionally I make mix CDrs for late night music. Last week one little odd man, who I didn't even know *liked* music, piped up when "Billy Radcliffe" came on. That surprised me. I've come across a few cooks who dig FB.

And I already have the link included...just need to upload the update.

My teacher is a Frank Black/Pixies fan - he actually told me he knew Frank and Joey in college.
Now that Frank's a member of this board, It's amazing that i'm even asking this, but, in the case that Frank reads this, the guy's name is Ari Weinstein. He currently teaches in Attleboro, MA.

My son was introduced to FB in 98...he was 3. He knows more FB than most people I speak with daily. He is now 6 and has "acquired" my "FB&the Catholics" & "Pistolero" CD's for his walkman and CD player in his room. I think........."Do you feel bad about it" and "Los Angeles" are his favs.

My kids, Dan (8) & Andrew (7) love Frank Black and the catholics music too. Especially Robert Onion. I was driving around Snowdonia in North Wales a few months back with DITS constantly on in the car. By the end of the holiday my kids knew all the words (even the bad ones) They have since learned most of BLD.

The only problem I have with my grade school kids listening to FB is that he does swear - not that I mind it, but I really don't want my kids to hear it. I almost thought of asking Frank (if I ever meet him) if he could make alternate versions of the songs (like 'Blast Off) without the cursing. But in reality, I don't think he would...oh well.... Trey

Rumour has it that Saddam Hussein is into Frank Black... apparently Saddam isn't too fussed about George W Bush getting his hands on his nuclear and chemical weapons, he just doesn't want Bush to find his secret Frank Black bootlegs! |

I had a Spanish teacher in high school that loved the Pixies. She was really into the Surfer Rosa record. She was twenty five, but she told me that she had older sisters.
She was really into "Vamos" and "Oh My Golly".

How old are most of you guys? Is it really that odd that a teacher can still have good taste in music? This whole thread is just a bit odd to me because most of the FB fans that I know are late twenty to thirty-somethings and have been into the man from the Black Francis days, most of them are academics. I was actually quite (pleasantly)surprised to see the really young following FB&TC has at the last gig here in Ireland...Maybe I'm just getting old??? |

One day I was chillin' with this girl in the cafeteria and she just started humming "Hey!" so we started talking about music. Little did I know that she was into almost every band I was, kind of strange. Anyways, since I have been in college, I have made fans of everyone in my apartment, so aparently we are going to make a group trip down the road to the FB show.

Without a doubt, the Vice President of the corporation I work at. He heard me listening to TOTY one day, and started talking to me about how much he loves Frank Black. Also turned me onto the White Stripes (De Stijt era, pre-MTV). Pretty strange :) |

On a White Stripes note, De Stijl is an AMAZING album...a must-have, if you will. I have yet to hear the first WS album, but I bet it's just as good. I wish I would have known about them when I was still living in Michigan..argh. Alright, return to your regularly scheduled FB chat. |

My boss likes good music too. The other day I was listening to DW when he came by, I played the first seconds of Velvety and he said "That's great! It sounds like the Violent Femmes". I was quite surprised.

I've have the double-pleasure of digging fb music, then turning friends on to it. Thusfar I've converted about a baker's dozen from all walks of life. The weirdest part - they thank ME for it! Strangest convert - my mom! Worst convert - any girlfriend. The best fans are any fans - one of the great reasons to go to shows now is to see all the different psyched people - always it's a good audience. Ten years ago it was all moshers! And me among them...

Well, my addition to the academic thread: I teach too (I'm a creative writing professor at a Florida school). Don't know if you consider 28 "old." Some of my students love Frank Black and Pixies. |

I have a similar story. I had an IT teacher who did his job and didn't speak about personal matters at all. Except one day I was bored and decided to enquire about Husker Du on the net (during his class) he came over and looked at it for a while as I was about to close it he asked if I liked them. I asked him about some decent songs etc and he asked why I was intrested in them and I said because I know Frank Black likes them he then pointed out he had seen both the pixies and Husker Du numerous times. I was really suprised as he certainly didn't look the gig type. He hadn't heard much of Franks solo stuff. The end. |
