Yes, i think some of us should discuss Bradbury as he is so prominent in Frank Black tunes...and i suspect that there are a few bradbury fans out there too. Personally, i've been a bradbury fan for quite awhile, my favorite stories being: pillar of fire, the veldt, and the longest rain.
as for the Frank Black connection, i do think there is a little Bradbury influence in the style of writing and themes in some frank black tunes...if you feel the same way or disagree, feel free to elaborate....i'd like to know what some of you think on the subject.

I would recommend Dandilion Wine and Fahrenheit 451.
As for the FB connection, they are both very graphic in a beautiful way.

I read the martian chronicles, and some of it did remind me of FB in ways. I need to read some more of his work. But they way the describe things is similar, I think. |

I find there to be a huge correlation between The Martian Chronicles and the album Trompe Le Monde. Does anyone else see this?

the way these two individuals form entire worlds with just a few lines of lyric or a few paragraphs is astonishing. their art is one in the same.

I personally get the feeling that Frank isn't that well versed in Ray Bradbury (neither am I). Frank takes inspiration from little tibits here and there, but as he has made clear, he usually isn't 100 percent familiar with all the things he writes about (which leads to intersting writing for sure). For instance, I recall an interview where the interviewer asked Frank what his favorite Bradbury piece was, and Frank could only describe by synopsis, he didn't actually know the title. I think he just liked the title "Cult of Ray" and admired the massive cult that surrounds Ray Bradbury. Frank has never claimed to be an intellectual, and I admire him for this. |

I've read every one of Bradbury's books except for a couple of poetry volumes. Actually, hearing Frank mention him years back got me curious and led me to Bradbury's wonderful world. Ray in turn, inspired me to become a writer. I don't see much of a style connection between Frank and Ray, but there is definitely a similarity in creativity, independent spirit, and work ethic. At 82 Mr. Bradbury is currently working on 3 new books set to release in the upcoming year, 2 plays, and 5 movie scripts--and while I don't envision Frank to be touring the country and rockin' out at 82, I do see him continuing for a long long time. |

here's something interesting:
i grew up in waukegan, il, which is where bradbury grew up. when i was 5 i lived right down the street from bradbury's old house. this neighborhood was the setting of dandelion wine. the park that is across from his old house is now called ray breadbury park. i went to the dedication when i was 5 and saw bradbury in person. of course, i didn't know who he was then, but now he's one of my favorite writers.
just that that would be of interest to some of you guys and gals. i'll be signing autographs after the show...

Got to say, I don't think very highly of The Martian Chronicles (his most popular book, apparently), though Death Is A Lonely Business was pretty good when I read it 3 or 4 years ago. |

Jose Jones: You grew up near that house??? No way, Jose! Dandelion Wine is my second favorite Bradbury novel. IÕve read it enough times that it seems as if I know your old neighborhood very well...at least how it was some 70 years back. Has it changed much? I actually live in downstate Illinois and have been planning a pilgrammage there for some time. IÕd ask you for directions, but have a copy of a Waukegan map that Ray outlined himself with the Dandelion/RayÕs boyhood-related locations. How is/was the old house holding up? I heard it was becoming rundown...What a shame. The place should be a National Shrine. If I had any kind of money...
Chris Knight: If you liked ÒDeath..Ó you should check out the third installment in the series Ray has just finished due out next week: December 24, 2002, called ÒLetÕs All Kill Constance.Ó The second in the series is ÒGraveyard for LunaticsÓ (also very good). |

well, basically all of waukegan is run down now. it's a shame, considering it was once know as greentown due to it being very pretty. it's a pretty ugly place. the old street, though, that the house is on is kind of cozy.

i really liked martian chronicles. i saw a frank black interview on much music about 5 years ago and he was asked to pick a favorite book. he said red mars by kim stanley robinson (i believe it's a three part series- red mars, green mars, and blue mars). anyone read it? |
