Hi!
I´ve been reading some of the topics in this forum (not all of them, of course) and I think it would be very interesting to know about the personal situations, recalls, inspirations, etc. that Frank´s songs awake into your minds. I don´t mean the actual meaning of the lyrics (there´s another place in this forum for that topic) but the very thoughts and feelings they inspire you or what memories they bring you.
I don´t know if somebody else suggested this same topic before, if it is so, I have not read it.
For instance, when I listen to "Headache" I imagine a black and white picture representing a brain left on the sand, all pulpous and adbandoned by a rivershore and invaded by roots. Lots of roots. And worms opening their ways through the Brocca area and birds picking at the neocortex. And so inmediately I fell like listening to "I love your brain". When I listen to "I love your brain" I imagine myself into the black and white picture walking by the rivershore and picking up that poor brain invaded by roots and worms and petting it and cleaning it with my handkerchief and then kissing it very warmly. And so I fell like listening to "Where is my mind?" and so on.
(No, I don´t take drugs except for marijuana.)
And Frank himself makes me smile for he and my boyfriend look like twins. Yes, I´ve got a picture of Frank as a wallpaper and everyone think that it´s my boyfriend. And when they read the name "Frank Black" under it they get really surprised. So when I listen to him I always think of my boyfriend.
Well, it´s time to go to bed. Bye!

Buenas nachos!
Well, I guess the lyrics tend to create the picture, or mood of the song for me. For example, I always pictured the midwest (US) when he sang about the navajo, or the Pixies' The Happening. Also, the new albums seem to give most Americans an americana feeling, like the driving down the interstate for miles kinda feeling, even though I've never driven across America myself. I've driven from NY to the south, and from the Carolinas to Texas before. Never across it. So I don't know what Frank is talking about...hehe.
Hasta la vista, baby! |

Hi! Sasquatch, I agree with you. The two last albums are so American that I always think of American road movies when listening to them. I´ve never been to the USA but I imagine a landscape very similar to the dessert of Los Monegros (Aragón, Spain) except for those huge black bull shaped billboards over the dry hills you can find anywhere along the Spanish roads (toros de Osborne). But I generally think Frank´s solo albums as more Americans as the Pixies´. The Pixies had a more international sound.
The Swimmer: Ha, ha, ha, keep on smoking, boy!. I´ll think of you while smoking my next spliff. Have you ever tried binaurals?. At the time I´m experiencing with a brain wave synchronizer and I assure you it´s a very interesting experience of self-exploration. It can bring you to altered mind states quite easily. There are some good sharewares to try. But the problem is that you can´t listen to music while you try.
Saludos.

I almost got to try a binaural once. After reading Altered States by Chayefski I've been intrigued by the idea of deprivation chambers. |

I love listening to Black Letter Days on long drives. Especially when 1826 comes on and I feel like driving 90 miles an hour. |

Good question, . More than anything, each album reminds me of a certain place in space and time. Alot of songs bring to mind specific stretches of roads and towns. Actually, now that I think about it, believe it or not, I've lived in a different small town for each of the different albums releases. Weird, huh? Devils and Black L, I count as two for this purpose, considering how they were both being released on the same day didn't give me enough time to move again. Oh well... Gotta run, so I can start packing before the spring and the new album gets here. |

I had a crush on this one girl for like a year, right. So finally I got to be with her. The whole thing only lasted a couple days, but those few days were absolute bliss. And the whole time we listened to Teenager of the Year together. YEAH! So now when ever I hear it it makes me think of the greatest night of my life. Pretty cool.
...I gotta smoke up/that's right/cause I've gotta make something work out. That song has got to be about getting lit.
What exactly is a bianural? It sounds cool.

Why do so many people give swimmer shit all the time? Swimmer, I think you are cool. Moreover, The Swimmer is a great song. I figured that Frank Black fans would be cool people because of their great tastes in such awesome music. I was obviously wrong.
Azofaifa gives us this cool, Dali-like, surreal post and you give her shit. That is part of the reason why people have a bad impression of this country is because of message boards. Well...I don't know about that, but still...
Hey Azofaifa, if I come to Spain will you smoke up with me? I'm pretty sure I'm ready to move there anyway. Anywhere but here.

Thanks, Misterwoe.
I too want to know what a binaural is, or a brain wave synchronizer. Anybody who can tell me more, please email me.
The song, Smoke Up, I kinda think of the feeling I get when I can't think of anything to write.
Draw the shades, relax, light one up and let's see where we are. Let's see what thoughts come to me.
The cool thing about FB's lyrics is that he can make the most ordinary things sound exciting and mysterious.
Would love to get deeper in this subject....

Amen! Such a good road album. The day after the FB&TC show in Little Rock I was driving southwards listening to Southbound Bevy. . . below an actual southbound bevy! The car must have stayed right under them for a good mile or two. Very meta. |

Hi!. The Swimmer and Mr. Woe, thanks for being so nice. I don´t understand why The Swimmer gets himself involved in such a row with Default. I think you´d better not reply to his comments on you. It is well known that there can´t be an quarrel between two people if one of them refuses to argue.
About binaurals and brainwave synchonizers:
"The binaural-beat appears to be associated with an electroencephalographic (EEG) frequency-following response in the brain. Many studies have demonstrated the presence of a frequency-following response to auditory stimuli, recorded at the vertex of the human brain. This EEG activity was termed "frequency-following response" because its period corresponds to the fundamental frequency of the stimulus (Smith, Marsh, & Brown, 1975). Binaural-beat stimulation appears to encourage access to altered states of consciousness.
Altered States Binaural beats can easily be heard at the low frequencies (< 30 Hz) that are characteristic of the EEG spectrum (Oster, 1973). This perceptual phenomenon of binaural beating and the objective measurement of the frequency-following response (Hink, Kodera, Yamada, Kaga, & Suzuki, 1980) suggest conditions which facilitate entrainment of brain waves and altered states of consciousness. There have been numerous anecdotal reports and a growing number of research efforts reporting changes in consciousness associated with binaural-beats. "The subjective effect of listening to binaural beats may be relaxing or stimulating, depending on the frequency of the binaural-beat stimulation" (Owens & Atwater, 1995). Binaural beats in the delta (1 to 4 Hz) and theta (4 to 8 Hz) ranges have been associated with reports of relaxed, meditative, and creative states (Hiew, 1995), and used as an aid to falling asleep. Binaural beats in the alpha frequencies (8 to 12 Hz) have increased alpha brain waves (Foster, 1990) and binaural beats in the beta frequencies (typically 16 to 24 Hz) have been associated with reports of increased concentration or alertness (Monroe, 1985) and improved memory (Kennerly, 1994).
Passively listening to binaural beats may not spontaneously propel you into an altered state of consciousness. One’s subjective experience in response to binaural-beat stimulation may also be influenced by a number of mediating factors. For example, the willingness and ability of the listener to relax and focus attention may contribute to binaural-beat effectiveness in inducing state changes.Synchronized brain waves have long been associated with meditative and hypnogogic states, and audio with embedded binaural beats has the ability to induce and improve such states of consciousness. The reason for this is physiological. Each ear is "hardwired" (so to speak) to both hemispheres of the brain (Rosenzweig, 1961). Each hemisphere has its own olivary nucleus (sound-processing center) which receives signals from each ear. In keeping with this physiological structure, when a binaural beat is perceived there are actually two standing waves of equal amplitude and frequency present, one in each hemisphere. So, there are two separate standing waves entraining portions of each hemisphere to the same frequency. The binaural beats appear to contribute to the hemispheric synchronization evidenced in meditative and hypnogogic states of consciousness. Brain function is also enhanced through the increase of cross-collosal communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Unlike mind altering drugs which people use to achieve altered states, binaural beat brainwave entrainment technology is legal and non-toxic."
This I´ve taken from a commertial page selling binaurals on CD. There are expensive apparatus for brainwave entrainment but there are cheaper methods. There are some shareware and freeware programs you can download and all you need to try is a pair of stereo earphones.
Shareware: Brainwave Generator Freeware: Sbagen-1.0.11
Also you can design your own binaurals (a little experience is required) with Cool Edit.
Saludos

"The cool thing about FB's lyrics is that he can make the most ordinary things sound exciting and mysterious."
Yes. It´s true. For example one of my favourites is "Pong". That´s a song about playing old videogames. That song brings me flashbacks of my childhood wen I loved to play first, Pong, then Space Invaders, later on Donkey Kong, Ghosts and Goblins, Gauntlet, and all that stuff. I think that some of the happiest moments of my life were those spent playing with my Spectrum 48K. No less happier than the moments I spent on the Nautilus charmed by the dark and handsome Captain Nemo, travelling through Africa with the wise hunter Allan Quatermain and through the cosmos guided by Dr. Carl Sagan, wich seemed to me no less wonderful than the depths of the sea or King Solomon´s mines. And there is another FB´s song wich lyrics I really love: "Solid Gold". I love that ghostly vission of the loved one with a scary frown appearing in a mirror. Even when it´s another song of rejected love, it is so mysterious and brings me some pictures of haunted maids and Edgar Allan Poe. I almost see that Lemurian (or Lamia) vampire woman with wild fired eyes and seaweed hair submerged into the metallic vertical waters of the mirror wich hangs out of nothing, suspended in the air under a cloudy sky. The mirror itself appears to me like a pool of mercury or liquid steel. And she reaches out of the mirror making visible her snow white hand with supernatural long fingers and turquoise nails. She reaches out as if she were longing to get out of the mirror but then stoops with a despictful look and again sinks into the steely deepths. Outside stands a man underneath that wild grey sky. The man reaches and touches the mirror, looks inside it, desperately scrutinizes it and suddenly springs and turns his face wich is white of terror. From his hand falls a golden ring.

I like this topic. When I hear St. Francis I remember a time 2 years ago. DITS had recently come out and I was new to FB& the C. It was Spring break and I was having massive problems with my mother so I was staying at my fathers dilapidated apartment just off the beach. It was mid-day and bleak; my father was sleeping, fighting off a hangover, and I was on the couch listening to DITS on my headphones. Through the window, I watched across the street the ocean waves rising and crashing in the storm. I wasn't paying any attention to the lyrics but afterward I realized the angry water was very fitting. The experience probably didn't help my mood but for some reason it has stuck with me. |

If I WAS gay, then what? Are you a homophobe?
Or are you upset that if I was gay I wouldn't go out with you? Because if I was gay, I wouldn't. I wouldn't with your dad either who keeps calling me.
Either way, it sounds like something for you and your therapist to work out. Or for you and your dad and your Family therapist to work out.
Have fun talking to yourself, shit for brains.
