This might not warrant a post, but oh well.
I made my sister a Frank Black tape and put Gouge Away on it (to prep for a concert) and she really liked all the songs but Gouge Away. She said the only reason she doesn't like it is because he starts singing right away, the rest of the song is very good. I just found that really strange because in concert he doesn't start singing right away, there's that big 2-minute intro. Kind of a weird coincidence, ¿no? Anyway, did anyone else find it bothersome that Frank starts singing right off the bat, I actually find the studio version of Gouge Away to be an example of a perfect song, but I like the epic touches it gets in concert as well. |

I love absolutely everything about Gouge Away, it is my favorite Pixies song. I haven't noticed the intro thing vs. the live - but I will pay closer attention next time I listen to the song. Hmmm... |

Honestly, I have no preference. For the record (pun intended), he starts singing "on 3" in the first measure of Gouge Away off Doolittle, so there is some lead in. I think the FB and the Cs live versions of all the Pixies songs sound great, particularly Monkey Gone to Heaven. I like trying to figure out what song it is before he starts singing. Daddy like!

Like the live version because of the build up. Not like the normal album version is bad or anything, but, Live it just rocks a bit more or at least appeals to my sense of rocking-ness more.

i hope your sister is like 12, otherwise she's an imbecile.
'i didn't like this song because he sings at 2:16. i don't like it when people sing from 2:14 to 2:22 in a song.'
oi vey, of all the assinine bullshit reasons i've ever heard for not liking something. if my sister had said that to me i'd have clocked her upside the head. |

They're both good, but I especially like the live version w/those malevolent-sounding keyboards. . .it's more suspensefully menacing. |

Thanks Ebb Vicious, real pleasant. My sister's only 17, the fact she listens to music like Frank and not N sync is good enough for me, and yeah it did sort of baffle me why she didn't like the very beginning of him singing, but it's just an opinion. And considering Frank no longer starts singing right away in the live version, it looks to be an opinion held be Frank himself.
There's never been a vocal tick on a song that's bothered you before? Perhaps you've completely enjoyed every song in existence through and through? |

what retarded logic that is. 'OMG! FRANK IS WEARING A DIFFERENT SHIRT THAN HE WORE ON THE ALBUM PICTURE! OBVIOUSLY HE THINKS THAT SHIRT SUCKS!'
beginning the vocals right at the beginning of the song is not a 'vocal tick.' now i see that stupidity runs in your family. |

Yeah, this is kinda weird for me too, I never get in these kind of chatroom arguments, I guess it is sort of perversely enjoyable in a way.
Frank is wearing a different shirt than on the album picture, that doesn't mean the old shirt sucks, yes, but does it mean you should call someone who likes his new shirt better an imbecile? Why did you get so angry anyway? jesus, settle down.

i didn't attack the people that said they like the live version better, that's a perfectly valid statement. but saying you *don't* like the album version because the vocals start right away is just insane. see the difference?
i'm not angry, i'm just blunt. i don't see a point to bullshit niceties. i speak my mind plain and simple. |

Ebb, you are also an asshole, plain and simple.
Why don't you pull your head out of your ass and chill out.
(You see, now what comes next is Ebb will say something idiotic to me because i ***gasp*** calle him out for being a dick in a forum. I got this forum argument bullshit down.....so now basically, we're all waiting Ebb....do your smartest......)
HA....and I actually thought I found an intelligent forum community.

I've never understood people with the whole "tough nit and grit no b.s. fuck you" attitude who occupy these little internet message boards. No matter how hard you try, it's just impossible to appear intimidating on one of these things. I can appreciate being direct, like a response "she didn't like gouge away just because it starts too soon, that's insane!" but not a seething foaming at the mouth tirade, I can't wait to show my sister this thread, she'll find it hilarious. |

It's quite apparent to me where not all friends! Is it me or is this site taking a familiar tone. Why is everyone angry all the time? Let's agree we will disagree from time to time no reason to be nasty. |

gouge away makes me want to run with a knife or scissors! I love this song and it probally is my favorite Pixies era song. The quick vocals definitly set it off for me, but like the build-up as a sort of prelude to the greatness that this song represents. |

I agree that her arbitrary declaration was strange, but mostly really cosmically interesting. It's like she's on the current Frank Black wavelength without even realizing it. Just don't ever let her hear "D=RxT" or she may decide to hate the Pixies altogether. I guess those vocals start on "-2" before the music even joins him.

I think even back when the Pixies played live, he would start late with the vocals as he does now. At least around the Trompe Le Monde era. I love this song and I think the live version is more intense with the almost eerie lack of vocals until he belts them out in the chorus.

Has anyone given thought to the fact that attempting to belt out lyrics without the backing of a band might be a tad bit intimidating. Even to a seasoned veteren such as Frank Black?! Singing by yourself to a crowded smoky room might be a difficult task for someone. Just a thought. Ebb - have you met MIRV yet? (I am speaking about of your bluntness)

I dont think Frank Black gets intimidated like that. He's a very good performer...very confident. Just look at his new rendition of Monkey Gone to Heaven.

No matter how intelligent you are, no matter how refined your matters, plain and simple Gouge Away makes you want to beat somebody. Love the keyboards on the live version. Miss Kim Deal's backing vocals a little though. |

Itchload - personally, I think your sister is very perceptive. In my view also, Gauge Away is greatly improved with the long instrumental beginning. The build up makes the song grander and gives it more space. Frank beginning to sing immidiately on the album version seems rushed to me, like bursting in before letting the song gain its momentum. The Live version is really one great excercise in building momentum which should be studied, from the first bass/drums bits to the final guitar solo. It turns a merely decent song into a masterpiece. |
