Just seen American Splendor the other day and loved it so much I am ordering the comic. Since I'm a book guy, this is a new world to me. Anyone have any other suggestions on other "literary" minded comics/graphic novels, underground or otherwise?

The league of extraordinary Gentlemen....the movie sucks, but the comic was brilliant, with literary references all over the place. The sandman graphic novels also kick ass

I read a pretty good one recently called "It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken." It was good in that it was a "realistic" graphic novel just about some guy who really liked old comic strips and his quest to discover who he was.

All of Frank Miller's "Sin City" comic books are excellent, if you like violence.

Scott McLeod wrote a book called "Understanding Comics" which is a damn fine look at the underlying structure of the art form of 2D sequential art.

I have never read the graphic novel, but the movie "Road to Perdition" was based on one. I liked the movie; while I can't really recommend the comic I'd wager it's worth checking out.

"Preacher" is adapted into graphic novel form, even though it was originally serialized comic books, they've collected each story arc into graphic novel form. It's more of a surreal adventure story, about a preacher named Jessie Custer who has the ability to make people do as he wishes with the power of his voice. In the course of the stories, he meets God, (literally) and hangs out with a guy named Arseface who is unbearable to look at because of a bullet he took right in the middle of his grill.

By "literary" do you mean more mature, book-like subject matter, or more reference to actual literary works? All of the abovementioned comics are very intelligently written, and you won't find a superhero vs. supervillian story, that turns so many readers off from comics, in any of them. =)

Take me, break me, tell me a good one and maybe I'll cry

Sandman
V for Vendetta

edit: just saw American Slendor last weekend, and absolutely loved it as well. haven't read the comic yet though. "Crumb" knocked my socks off though. It felt like AS was a little too thin at times, as if they had to cut it down to bare bones to keep the audience's interest...almost MTVified, ironically. I dunno -maybe that was intentional.

A bit off the main topic, but one of the best "literary" and otherwise cartoons out there is "Cowboy Bebop". I can't describe how much I love that series - we just saw the movie the other day, and it was incredible as well. If you haven't seen this on the late night programming on Cartoon Network, "Adult Swim", I think you can rent the eps.

Thanks for the suggestions. And yeah, by literary, I not only mean intelligently written, but done in an unconventional style more akin to moby dick than superman. What about Ghost World? I didn’t care for the movie, but I heard the comic is much better.

There's a documentary movie called Comic Book Confidential, made in the eighties, and I'm sure it featured the American Splendour guy.

On the Newspaper strip front, I'm fond of Calvin And Hobbes. Creator Bill Watterson fought a long battle with his employers to stop them merchandising his beloved cartoon....very noble!

I borrowed the 'Gone to Texas' Preacher graphic novel and read it last week - loved it to bits. Insanely violent but really smart. I think, probably as much due to the age I got into comics as anything, I'll always hold Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns and the Sandman books as my faves...
