I've recently downloaded their downloaded their new album, and I can't stop listening to it. Definitely my next purchase. I'm quite addicted to their Hot Hot Heat meets Interpol sound; really catchy, fun, sorta shake-your-booty rock. Yet not cheezy and stupid. Very listenable vocals and memorable hooks. Anyone liking these crazy Scots?

Yeah, got the album a couple of days ago, and it's been stuck in my discman since. 'Catchy, fun, sorta shake-your-booty rock' sums it up pretty well. And they're coming to Dublin soon. Looking forward to it. Anybody know if they're any good live? |

we played the album at work, but I found it really boring, bar the hit single...
it just sounded like one good song with a load of other tracks that just sort of existed..
sorry.. |

the single seems pretty catchy - they play it all the time on XFM, and i hear the front man is a real nice guy who helped out lotsa scottish bands in their early days by giving them gigs (eg, Mogwai & Belle & Sebastian), so i have respect for them for that...
but i wouldn't buy the album...i think i would get bored very quickly.

I don't really like all these bands, Interpol, Radio 4, Franz Ferdinand... I mean, they're probably good, but I prefer discovering the original bands they ripped off. Every review I've read of the FF album compares them to Gang Of Four and similar bands, so I think I'm gonna listen to the old bands instead of the new ones.

summed up quite well with the interpol-hot hot heat comparison... i don't know, i quite like a few songs on it, but my gf keeps playing the album over and over again and i'm getting a bit sick of it... it just doesn't seem massively interesting to me. not bad, but not worthy of too much of my valuable attention.

this is funny to me because (and I might just be weird because of this), but I've known about Mogwai for years, and I just recently heard of Franz Ferdinand.....

from what i understand, he was not in any band at the time - he owned 1 or more clubs in Glasgow. there was something in the metro (free London mag) the other day about it, but i have also read about it in Mogwai interviews..
in fact, i just found it: I heard a rumour Belle & Sebastian were instrumental in current indie faves Franz Ferdinand getting together. Is that true? Nah. Alex (Kapranos, lead singer of Franz Ferdinand) used to run clubs in the late 1980s where he'd put on three or four bands for nothing. Everything he organised, we went to because it was a happening. If anything, he set me on the path because he was the only guy involved in clubs in Glasgow at the time who said that anytime we wanted to do something, we should get in touch. Funnily enough, they played with us on tour last year and we jested that perhaps people would like to see us supporting them this year. Now look at them.

Oh jo, you may the only forum member who can make me cry! (Aside from Carolyn, but that's another tale). I'm not sure what has grabbed me about this record, but I do quite enjoy it. Though it's only been a few weeks, and sometimes an album grabs me, but then lets go fairly quickly (see: the Darkness, Liars, Hot Hot Heat, etc, etc). I'm not sure if they will have the staying power of my favourite artists, but we'll see.
A few of you over-seas kids seem to be mentioning their "hit" single, and over here they have no presence, so perhaps my thinking isn't coloured by that old "oh, THOSE guys again..." sort of thing that I kinda have with the Strokes and other hype-machine bands. So tell me jo, what should I be listening to, hmm?

I'm glad to see this topic. My friend has decided we are going to their show in Boston next week and I had never heard of them. I was about to post and ask what you all thought, but now I don't have to. Lovely.

16th of April in The Ambassador. Was supposed to be in The Village, but they got moved because of high demand. Just noticed that they're not on sale on the Ticketmaster web site. Hope they haven't sold out.
Just coz I'm new doesn't mean I'm just here for the Pixies updates. |

I'd be a bad person to tell anyone what they should listen to, but FF just didn't grab me - I so wanted to like them as well, my friend has been raving on about them for a while now, but they just don't do it for me - the single 'Take Me Out' went straight into our UK chart at Number 2 (or 3) a few weeks ago... if the album had had one more song like 'Take Me Out' I'd have been happier, but it was like that song mixed in with the last Strokes album, or something. V, disappointing.
hmm...things I've heard recently that I quite like.. hm. Played an album by The National yesterday - Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers, which was quite good, nice and mellow and I want to buy it now, been playing a TV On The Radio ep, with a Pixies cover on it (I need to hear it again as I wasn't paying 100% attention) which was one of those sounds you sit up and go "ooerrr", work wise, the new Rachel Goswell album is good, no release date on that yet, Young Heart Attack's Tommy Shots album is a good 40 minute rock album for that after lunch lull when you need to wake up, and the new 50 Foot Wave ep rocks too. I'm still waiting for the Courtney Love album, ordered that a week or so ago, cause I like the single, and I found it cheap (ish) so if that's the only good song, then so be it.. oh and also Machine Translation from Australia - their 'Love On The Vine' ep is fantastic. |

FF sound like something between Pavement and the Talking Heads. I like Pavement and the Talking Heads. But I don't like FF. Is there any band that plays a really original music, today (except the Catholics)?

there are people who would argue that even the Catholics aren't playing anything original these days, since it's basically alt-country

Thanks for the recomendations jo, I'll check 'em out. I've heard bad things about Courtney's solo venture, but then Kim Deal is on it, isn't she? And my only source is pitchfork, and frankly they can be bigger bitches than... well, Courtney. Her recent public behaviour is very troubling, however. One hopes Frances Bean manages to grow into an fairly well adjusted person.
I've heard the TV on the Radio EP, and it's pretty good. Their "Mr. Grieves" was a slight let down at first, as I was hoping the song would go somewhere other than the acapella thing they start out with, but it gets better with repeated listens, as does the whole ep. Their full length should be interesting. Also, could you please define "ooerr"? I don't think I've ever "ooree'd"..... Uh... insert winky face here, or something apropriate.

i really like the franz. they don't really sound anything like the strokes to me. i heard darts of pleasure first, and i didn't really like it, but the video was good so i watched it a lot and it grew on me. 'secially the 'ich heisse super-fantastich!' part. and take me out is a great song, with another great video. and micheal is a great song. those gay bastards. and tell her tonight! and the dark of the matinee! and 40ft! and i'm cheating on you! god, i love that album. and the bside shopping for blood is great too. |

The lead singer, Alex Kapranos, was the bassist in Yummy Fur but then moved onto guitar. He was called Alex Huntley then 'cos he used his mum's maiden name. He didn't feature on any of their albums though. Cheers NME.
I haven't bought the album yet but it sounds quite good. The single Take Me Out is very good. I am going to see them in April at the Manchester Academy!!!

I believe the new Courtney Love offering is quite average but I would like to listen to it myself first. I have ordered the Auf Der Maur (Melissa Auf Der Maur - ex-hole) album from CD Wow 'cos the single is brilliant (Followed The Waves). Her album is supposed to be a lot better than Courtney's.
That TV On The Radio are mates of Yeah Yeah Yeahs so I must check them out, especially if they do a Pixies cover!

I didn't say they sounded like the Strokes, I said that in Europe I imagine they are a hype-machine band, much like the Strokes are/were here, which could lead to someone not liking them even before hearing them.
