Will i be able to play the DVD's i buy here in the UK (region 2) when i get back to New Zealand (region 4)
i have been buying a few DVD's over here and I am about to buy the Family Guy Season's 1 + 2 to complete that collection, but i have suddently got very afraid of these being useless once i go back home.
If i have an all-regions DVD player when i get home will this play my region 2 DVD's or am i wasting my money?
thanks in advance.

Well, if you have an ALL REGIONS DVD Player. I am pretty sure that means it plays all regions.
You'll be fine.
If however you do NOT have an ALL REGIONS dvd player, you won't be.
They'll be as good as shiny silver coasters for your beer. |

We've got two dvd players (both multi-region). They both seem to be happy playing dvd's from all parts of the world. I've bought a couple of dvd's from Cd Wow. I think they're based in Singapore and I'm sure the discs were region 4.

you'll be able to play all regions on all regions players, however, if you have an NTSC disc rather than a PAL one, unless player and tv are compatable, you'll have problems.
most players can be made all-region - there's some websites which give you all the hack codes for your players - we just converted our old player to be able to play VCD's (although we don't have any, we just did it cause we could. we were bored, probably).
so you should be ok anyway! |

thanks for all the good stories...making me feel better about it all.
i know about the whole NTSC/PAL problems, but both UK and NZ use PAL, so that won't be a issue.

With an all region player you should. I think I heard some people had problems with these, though-I don't think they're as available now....not manufactured by the big companies, anyway.

as jo said there's a firmware hack to make a simple dvd player read all region discs.just make sure you buy something branded because you will find it hard to get a hack for a swapsht dvd player.here are a couple of sites with simple instructions and some dvd player models:
http://www.regionfreedvd.net
http://www.709firmware.fsnet.co.uk/index.html
i made this to my samsung and it works fine.
PS:there is a hack to de-macrovision your player too but it's more difficult.
