BLT.. indeed, i had a 64. it was dark green. i fucking LOVED that car. for the longest time it was amazingly problem free. they made those things tough. i drove it back and forth from LA to San Francisco many many many times.. but eventually it started giving out on me and i couldn't afford to fix it. i broke down three times in one weekend once, requiring towing each time. that was about it for me.
my parents took pity on me and gave me an offer i couldn't refuse, which was a free car. i really didn't want to let it go, but there was no choice..
that was back in the days when style was more important than practicality. now i'm more in the opposite vein. though i'd love to have another cool vintage car again. but as a second car. not as my main mode of transpo.. (my recent fantasy is a Porsche Speedster)
apl - actually 122's are not that expensive. i got mine for 2 grand. not in the best shape physically, but not horrible. i imagine you could get something that's in nice shape for 3 to 4 thousand.
there's always ebay too. i understand being squemish about buying a used car online, sight unseen, but most of them have satisfaction guarantees.. the guys i work with have bought tons of cars online (they're total car freaks) and have had nothing but successful results. 122's baby! i knew there was a reason i liked you BLT (other than that you're a Ribs USA patron).. |

This is what my car looks like, sorta. It's burgandy/maroon...the rack isn't on the back, either.

A French philosopher (Roland Barthes) said that big cars are the modern equivalent of gothic cathedrals.
This remark is really useless, but it makes me look like a smart and well educated guy.
Oh, and I drive a Golf. German cars are by far the best in the world.

Her's a picture of a Golf.
It's funny because my father's first car was a Beatle (another VolksWagen car), and 2 or 3 years after he bought a Golf and has been driving a Golf ever since. The car has changed a lot, and today's models have nothing in common with those from 20 years ago, but the idea is still the same. So, I am just taking on a family tradition.

I hate to have to agree with a Frenchman, but German cars (especially VW's) are the best cars in the world. Probably. Here's my current ride: my brother's 1986 Vauxhall Nova 1.1. He's in South Africa for 4 months so I get his car! 'S great, does the job nicely. Good nick for a car the same age as him! Imagine this in light blue...

One really funny thing is that the French girls have an international reputation for being horny... Well, I have travelled a little, and I must say that the horniest girls in the world (well, after the girls from Prague) are definitely the British girls. It becomes obvious after 10 minutes in London.
Well, I think I'm moving to London next year. Go tell the girls that I am back in town!

apl4eris, I have no idea what Amazon/122s go for these days. In '83, my father bought mine at the Anaheim Auto Dealer's Auction for $325. Two years ago, I sold it for $700 along with a small fortune in spare parts. It was far from original, though. Because I was a mechanic who never had the intention of keeping it original, the car had many idiosynchrasies. If you want any Volvo info, brickboard.com is a good place to start.
floop, I'm with you on the style vs. practicality angle. I now have a Toyota pickup. Now I can carry around all the stuff that wouldn't fit in that tiny 122 trunk. But sometimes I still find myself trying to roll the window down the wrong way.

I'm getting ready to sell my Navy Blue 1990 Chrystler New Yorker Landou. I love my car. It's so big and smooth, and has a lot of power ( no one Ever passes me on the highway). I'm gonna miss my lil' pimp mobile. I wish I could get a Lincoln, any Lincoln. |

There's only one way to get a Yankee cap on me-- staple it to the skull of my dead, rotting carcass. Then prepare to be haunted. |

The Yankee cap contradicts the pickup truck/jeans/flannel shirt stereotype if you are talking about where I live. Replace that with a mullet, or maybe a NASCAR racing cap, and you are spot on.

That's a broad, sweeping generalization. And it's a pretty good one. I love a good sweater, though. |

this is a very interesting thread, but i have to comment on one observation that has been screaming at me looking at all the pictures: all post 1960's American cars are hideously ugly
why is that?
