STAND!
Gotta love Sly.
There' A Riot Goin' On is probably my favorite album of Sly's, with Family Affair and many other classics.
But just about anything Sly is fly.
Greatest Hits is a fine compilation.
Anyone else down with it? |

Fresh is my favorite. They are the best. They were a true multi-racial band with male and female members. They made awesome music and they were beautiful. |

I've been diggin them the past few months. I loved Hot Fun In The Summertime so I had to check out more...they've got some really good stuff. I heard Family Affair on the radio a few months ago and it blew my mind...it's so lo-fi and dark, I love the sound of it. The throbbing music...it's really good.

I've heard that the female singer on Family Affair achieved the tone of her voice on that song by cupping her hand over her mouth while singing.

There was an article on the recording of Riot in Mojo a couple of years ago; the whole thing seemed to be an insane drug session with Sly letting a bunch of women sing so that he could hump them afterwards. The recordings were cut and spliced into "meaning" later. According to the bass-player, Sly tried to get him killed amongst other things that happened in that period. It is, by the way, one of the first albums that includes sounds from a drum machine. Yeah. "Hot fun" is also cool. |

I was at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles a LONG time ago when Sly opened for Stevie Wonder. Sly got arrested for having a bag of heroin in one hand and a bag of Cocaine in the other. Sex MAchine was AWSOME. |

Stand! is my favorite album.
I just love Sly. The music is both charming and subversive.

The anecdotes are just amazing. Sly used to keep pretty much a whole zoo at his Bel-Air mansion, including a baboon, subsequently slaughtered by the insane pitbulls who were trained to attack anyone in a hat...
They say that Family Affair is the first recording to feature a drum machine... Also, its a fact that Miles Davis, Bobby Womack, Jonny 'Guitar' Watson, Herbie Hancock and Billy Preston all recorded sessions, but no-one actually knows who's on the actual record! Least of all Sly!
