I just heard this again on the telly, and I reckon its one of Bowie's most under-rated songs. Its got everything you could ever want: killer melody, acoustic rock-out, some nutter warbling over the top... So props to the man, would you believe that record is now 35 years old?!

I absolutely love this song. It's always stuck in my head. The best part is the change at the beginning after "check ignition..." It's so dramatic and so awesome

I love it...not a huge Bowie fan, but probably my favorite song of his.

Underrated as in, at the time people wrote it off as a novelty song. Nowadays, people are more likely to quote Changes, Heroes (fair do's) or others as Bowie's 'best song', and this is often left out. Unfairly, I reckon.

I may respectfully note that "Space Oddity" was spawned from Bowie's first viewing of Kubrick's 2001.

I listened to this song today. We bought the most recent 2CD best of that's in the stores here. It's pretty good, especially disc 1.

Two videos were made to accompany the song (as it was released twice in the 60/70s as a single). The first one, and the better known of the two, is a low budget affair with bowie bathed in red light in the recording studio. Bit in the second one, at the line "tell my wife i love her very much" it cuts to bowie on a futuristic bed with a bunch of silver lycra-clad alien space-groupies. It er...adds a different feel to the song.
