Every now and then I am reminded that I need to check out some music by the band The Wipers, whose only song I'm aware of is the song D7, which Nirvana covered on an import of the Lithium single which I have (it was also on the import Hormoaning). The song rocks, lyrically and musically. I've never even heard the original by the Wipers though. Any of you got any recommendations for Wipers material to pick up. BLT, I think you're a Wipers fan.

I am a Wipers fan through and through. D7 is on the first album, "Is This Real?" My favorite Wipers albums are "Youth of America" and "Over the Edge".
Here's what you need to do. Go to their web site: http://www.zenorecords.com/enter.htm Buy the "Wipers Box Set". It's $17 for three discs. It has the first three albums (all the ones mentioned above) and a ton of extra tracks. I'm not exaggerating when I say these albums are as epic as the first three Pixies albums. They are monumental walls of rock and roll distortion. Greg Sage is the real deal-- his songs are from the heart. I already had all these records for years but got the box set just to have all the extra stuff Greg put on them. If I sound like an advertisement for The Wipers it's because I am. One of the greatest shows I ever saw was The Wipers opening for Big Black in San Francisco 1987-- I'm still not sure which band was better! |

That's cool, apl4eris. They are one of those bands that inspire an extremely devoted following (like Frank, The Fall, Chameleons, Guided By Voices, et al.) and there is a reason for that.

I am also curious and I've never heard of this band.
I thought this topic would be about changing windshield wipers, which I do need to do. The ones I have now are smearing.
Are there a couple of songs I could download to preview them that would most likely get me hooked?

Ah, the Wipers...
Highly underrated. I love them.
There is a really good release that proves a decent starting point. I think it is actually called "Best of Greg Sage & the Wipers"
Fyi, the Wipers line-up was ever-changing. The only constant was Greg Sage (who is the singer/guitarist/songwriter), so it has basically been his project all along. Going back and listening to albums like "Youth of America", "Is This Real?", and "Over the Edge" shows just how vastly influential this band has been on countless bands in terms of punk ethic and musical integrity. Follow the link BLT gave you, that is Greg Sage's personal site for The Wipers and his label Zeno Records.
Also fyi, Sage seems to share much of the same space-related mysticism that Frank delves into...I think I remember reading that Greg Sage claims to have been abducted by aliens in his youth (something I think he alludes to in at least one song)
My favorite Wipers songs? I would have to say "Telepathic Love" ... "Let's Go, Let's Go away" ... "Telepathic Love" ... shit, there's a bunch.
Tar Tar ... Nirvana also did an awesome cover of "Return of the Rat" (it's on Outcesticide 1) |

actually, for 17 bones... Just go ahead and by the three-album compendium. The quality/quantity FAR outweighs the price. If you are into punk rock at its roots, you will not regret the purchase. Trust me |

I was not aware of this Wipers box set. Thanks for the tip, and if my endorsement means anything: this band is beyond good. Greg Sage is the man.

Crudbiscuits! Its £20 here, and I don't have that sort of sponduly, specially if I want to eat, pay rent and buy the new Electrelane album as well.

Speaking of, is it me or does "I'll be Around" sound like Nirvana's entire career?
