I recently decided to watch these two movies after reading the gangster movie post (and I'd heard good things)

Just finished watching Casino now. Wow that movie is fucking great, excellent throughout the beginning, just hearing about all the cool stuff thats going on in the casinos was entertaining me. A solid story throughout and cringeingly brutal. However at times it looks like bits were lifted right from goodfellas.

Malax Score: :| :| :| :| :| 5 Thumbs

Goodfellas on the other hand, I finished watching and I thought, oh that was good, but meh. Maybe I was expecting to much, when you hear about films so much you expect so much more. The fact that the story although interesting seems to stutter without any real backbone, Im aware its about Henrys life but it just seems like the first few hours should have built up to so much more than it did. I dunno

Malax Score :| :| :| .i 3 and a half Thumbs

Casino is a lot better than Goodfellas in my opinion.

Well, at first I like Goodfellas first.

Now when I watch them, there's so much more to Casino.

Time will ultimately reward Goodfellas though.

GOODFELLAS is better, hands down. and probably the best film of the 90's..

I don't think much of Goodfellas. I do enjoy parts of it, but I can't really get into the story because it's just highlights of small stories, and rarely stays in one time period. It just jumps all over. I was surprised at how much I didn't get into the film when I first watched it. After watching it a few more times, I like it a bit more, but overall, it just doesn't strike me as anything great.
I like Casino a bit more. Both Goodfellas and Casino suffer from being a bit long, but with Casino I feel more entertained and find the movie more enjoying overall throughout the entire picture. I like Deniro's character a lot, too. A lot more than any of the characters in Goodfellas. Joe Pesci is basically the same character in both films. Sharon Stone is quite good, though I just want to start smacking her towards the end. I like Joe Bob Brigg's cameo.
I definitely like Casino more, but don't think either are great.

Goodfellas is one of my all-time faves. Casino is good, but if you cut / shorten its violent scenes you'll probably find it much less powerful. Personally I almost consider it a 'hard' remake of Goodfellas.

I enjoyed Mean Streets more than both of them.

Casino all the way.
Goodfellas is very good though but it's quite a classic gangster movie.
Casino is a masterpiece direction-wise and I enjoy watching it way more. And I don't get the casino = goodfellas go to vegas thing.

I liked Goodfellas more myself, though it's been a long time and I could stand to watch these both again. I wonder though, purely as a scientist, if the outcome would've been different if you had watched them in the opposite order... they're both pretty long by themselves.

Similarities between the two:
Joe Pesci (Playing pretty much the same character)
A million and one actors who went on to be in the sopranos
Robert De niro
Its about gangsters
The ending is almost indentical
The time its set is roughly the same
Where they live looks pretty similar, stylish houses etc
Told from the point of view of someone
Shitload of backstory
Both based on a true story
Same director

I'd say thats enough for now. Obviously some are silly but some similarites are inexcusable. the ending to casino is lifted right from Goodfellas.

goodfellas is the better film of the two.....it has elements that apeal to all segments of society (very rich), but casino, i think that it is better musically....i really think that it is the movie where he perfected the use of pop music to set the tone of different scenes....personally, i think that Tarantino has become known for this element to his films by riding the coat-tails of the Man who started it.....

I can't BELIEVE one of my favorite films EVER can be superceded by a kind-of rip-off...although Casino is a true story, too! It's also a cool movie, but Goodfellas is where it's at for me.

i feel the opposite actually. even though it jumps through time, the whole thing is all about Henry and his story. I mean, it's narrated by him. you feel completely with him the whole film . it's pretty concise. whereas CASINO, becasue it's a bit more ambitious, is all over the place. CASINO is 3 hours long, but i don't think it needed to be. there's some fat that could have been trimmed..

i love both films, but for me GOODFELLAS is perfect cinematic storytelling.. if i watched the opening scene right now, i'd get sucked in and have to watch the whole thing.

i think part of it too is i just like the characters better in GOODFELLAS and the overall energy of the film. CASINO is kind of depressing, watching Dinero let everything fall apart around him (especially with his wife).. and while very good, i don't think Sharon Stone is that great in it. also, it's disappointing that Scorsese didn't utilize her naked more.. but that's a small gripe

i totally agree with Frank Black Francis about the music though. Scorsese is THE master of utilizing pop music in films. and you're right, you can totally see his influence in other filmmakers work .. not just Tarantino, but if you watch Wes Anderson's films (who i'm a huge fan of) it's clear that he's a big Scorsese fan. he's another filmmaker who had a knack for picking the perfect song, for the perfect moment (whether it's a montage, or transitional scene, or stylized slow- motion shot)... i think his use of music is equally inspired in CASINO and GOODFELLAS..

this makes me want to have a Scorsese DVD festival in my house (with me and my cat)

Yeah, I prefer Goodfellas. I appreciate casino a great deal, but goodfellas will always rock my boat.

I also agree with who ever said mean streets is better than both of them.
