I just finished watching The Purple Rose of Cairo (after watching Menace II Society and before watching Eraserhead, a strange triple feature), and I really enjoyed it. While watching it, I thought about the fact that we haven't discussed any Woody Allen films on this forum, or at least not that I'm aware of. My roommate is addicted to Allen's films, it's about all he rents. He's got me into it now, cuz I rented Purple Rose without his suggesting it and watched it while he's out of town. While I believe there are some themes that Allen overdoes (New York, infidelity, intellectuals, referencing his favorites in literature, philosophy, film), he just does it so damn well and has come up with a number of clever ideas that keep his work fresh after making at least one film a year for the last 35 or so years. I've seen something like 20 of his films now. Films of his I've really liked are Bullets Over Broadway, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Mighty Aphrodite, Manhattan, Sleeper, Play It Again Sam, Hollywood Ending, Anything Else... I could probably name almost all of them off, except for Husbands & Wives and Interiors, the latter of which I didn't even watch all the way through. There's a few sections in Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex that I don't care for, but then there's a few that are great. Overall, Woody Allen almost always entertains me.

Did you know that more people watch his movies in France (population: 60mn) than in the USA(population: 250mn, i think). He is really very popular here, and I like him very much. I saw a documentary about him touring with his jazz band, and Woody in real life is pretty similar to the neurotic characters he performs on screen...

I really haven't seen a bad Woody Allen film though some are weaker than others and there's still a couple I haven't seen. My fave are Manhattan Murder Mystery, Everyone Says I Love You, Deconstructing Harry, Purple Rose of Cairo and Sleeper. |

I hate to say I have yet to see a Woody Allen film... perhaps if someone wants to nominate the best one for my list, I'll actually get to see it. :)

I love the silly sci-fi feel to Sleeper. Woody Allen is perfect for the role of a person who wakes up in the future after being in suspended animation.

his seventies stuff is much better.....more wacky...like bananas, annie hall, and love and death....also pretty dang good are husbands and wives, hannah and her sisters, .....but i am glad to see that he is making a slight return to his earlier days with films like small time crooks, curse of the jade scorpion, and using driving symbology in hollywood ending like he did in sleeper... woody allen kicks some cerebral comedic ass!
...and you are right, we should talk about woody allen movies here....long overdue

I love Manhattan, Radio Days, and Purple Rose of Cairo. I have never seen Annie Hall - which is horrifying. I am going to watch it ASAP!
Too bad he's a pedophile. I lost interest in his later stuff after that.

I really liked SPEED with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. I haven't seen many other of his films though. Did he make "Dude Where's My Car?" That was hilarious! |

I'm a big fan of Woody Allen. One that hasn't been mentioned is Manhattan Murder Mystery. It's one of my favorites. Along with Love and Death, Play It Again Sam, Crimes and Misdemeanors. I could keep going but I'll stop. I rented Anything Else and I thought it was real good too. He has a young actor playing the part he usually does. It came off really well. |

M.M.M did not impress, as far as I can remember. The start of Bananas, where the president's assasination is commented on like a ball game, is funny. |

Anything Else was easily Jason Biggs best role ever. Nice to see him get away from the stupid teen comedies he's been locked up in.

You like the idea of falling in love with a character in a film and having that character pop out of the screen and leave the movie, Brackish Girl? What character did you want to jump out of what movie?

Sad to say that Woody Allen is a little irrelevant these days. When he was popular in the 70s and 80s, his films were pretty thoughtful. Today, we get stuff like Small Time Crooks and Hollywood Ending, both of which were fucking painful to endure.
But I must say that Manhattan is his best work, Sleepers is his funniest, Hannah and Her Sisters is the sappiest, and Crimes & Misdemeanors the most thought-provoking.

I found Hollywood Ending pretty good, especially the end :o) I agree his earlier work can be considered as better, but it's still a pleasure to discover his new films...

good question. most recently it woulda been donnie darko. but if he was still in love with gretchen that wouldn't have worked. but maybe at the part before he met her. and i would say her lines, and then he would have fallen in love with me. hmm, thanks for that little fantasy, tartar. |
