Today's random song of the day is The Snake.
What do you think of it?
lyrics Well I’m a snake oh yes I’m very smart But I was cruel without a humble start And I just lay here when you begged and you pleaded Now I lay here cut in half because I am not the one you needed
So pretty and so tender that’s a rabbits way A little pessimistic but that’s okay A pig or goat well they gonna let you be mistreated So I geuss on that note I am not the one you needed
Well they call me the snake I’m just feeling my way
Well I’m a snake oh yes I’m very smart But I was cruel without a humble start And I just lay here when you begged and you pleaded Now I lay here cut in half because I am not the one you needed
So pretty and so tender that’s a rabbits way A little pessimistic but that’s okay A pig or goat well they gonna let you be mistreated So I geuss on that note I am not the one you needed

Not on the top of my list. I was kind of taken aback when I first heard it, it just seems a little different than what Frank usually sounds like.
However, the more I listen to it, the more I dig it. |

I really like this song - the sax solo reminds me a lot of Night Boat to Cairo by Madness which is also a great song |

Hmm, quite a good little rock song. I like the low voice at the beginning. The whole thing is real fun to sing along to, and the sax solo is perfect for back seat moshing. |

i agree with psychic about it being different from franks usual songs...
i am actually listening to the awesome recording of this song from 28/11/03 at the moment, and i am really digging franks singing...it's all over the place...low for the beginning and then high and screamy at the end - really show's his ability to hit all kinda notes.
it's a goddan.

A funny little thing. Not my fave though.
I think it clearly refers to Chinese astrology. Wasn't Frank born in the year of the Snake (1965)?... |

True. My son is adorable and Frank is... well, say, not ugly.
In fact I thought he was a bear... |

This is one of his songs that is totally devirative in my opinion - but I like it! My favorite part is his "ooo!" at the end. When I saw him play this in his solo show he said "rock and roll part!" right before he rocked out. Yay!

It's a really fun song but I don't care for the vocal on the record

They didn't even bother to play a solo live where the sax part is on the record. That was a dissapiontment, but then again, you can never touch that sax solo, that solo owns all the solos ever.

I really like this song. I love the horns, and the songs placement on the album. One of many excellent tunes on SMYT.

The live version was amazing. I'm not a big fan of the album version though. |

If Frank is referring to the Chinese zodiac, then who's the rabbit he mentions?
I heard this song on the radio the other day. I think it was the first time I'd heard a Catholics song through that medium, so that was cool.

This song is very Lou Reed. I love that sax solo--I laugh every time I hear it b/c it's so psychotic.
I'm gonna assume that the rabbit in question is the ex.
I'm a cock. And a Virgo. And now I'm confused.

I never knew about the Chinese Astrology thing. I wondered what that "pig or a goat" line meant.
To me, the guy was equating himself with a snake for a variety of reasons (dangerous, negative, but also sexual) and the lady he's singing to, "so pretty and so tender", is the rabbit. He was arrogant and cruel around her, he took her for granted, and then when she left he found himself powerless and hurt in a way he didn't expect.
I like the song. It's one of the few uptempo songs in "rock" vein on Show Me Your Tears so I think it stands out a little. |

Agreed with Jop. And I like this song. Definitely one of his more rootsy, classic-rock numbers, but a great one.
