I know the Pixies have featured on several movie soundtracks, but I believe F.B also appears on a couple scores. Can't remember what movies, though...anybody?

Speaking of soundtracks, I love a lot of soundtrack music...Ennio Morricone, of course...his Serge Leone stuff is incredible. I love Vangelis' Blade Runner score, one of my favorites ever. And Howard Shore's Se7en music...his Lord Of The Rings music is great, too.

Much of the LOTR soundtrack sounds as though it was taken DIRECTLY from John Williams' sheetbooks, which is not to say that it's not good, but it's not original or even his...

Well, I think Williams rips himself off a lot...a lot of his work for Spielberg et.al is formulaic, tinkly, treacly orchestral hack-work...er, although he has written some brilliant music! Agreed, however, some of LOTR is'nt incredible, but a lot of it is damn fine.

He does, especially later in his career. The music for Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and the early stuff was pretty varied and brilliant, though parallels could be drawn between Star Wars and Indy even then. The new trilogy is very sparse on good music and I think that one of the reasons I like TPM better than AOTC is because the music was better. The movies are like music videos for me. Duel of the Fates and Anakin's Theme were both beautiful and there were many fantastic moments of the original themes as well (Anakin leaves home/Qui-Gon lightsabering his way through the blast door to the Force theme). Ep 2 had Across the Stars which was also quite refreshing but overused. I'd like to have seen more original music.
James Horner is probably the composer that sticks out the most as formulaic to me. I loved Mask of Zorro's soundtrack, but many times I've been sitting in a movie and the music swells, I turn to my friend and say, James Horner and sure enough...
Anyway, back on topic, I still do enjoy listening to the LOTR soundtrack, I just wanted to complain to someone... :)

Yeah, Duel Of The Fates is great...indeed, his early stuff is fantastic. James Horner did Titanic, did'nt he?

Would'nt it be cool if Spielberg got Sonic Youth or someone to do his next movie?

I've heard that for School of Rock, Jim O'Rourke was hired to teach the kids how to play. Now that'd be cool. I'm still more than happy to hear Johnny W. do Spielberg's stuff, though. But it'd be great to see a cool band putting together a soundtrack for a movie instead of just some seemingly random person. Even/especially if the band did the entire score themselves.

It would really funny to stick a really extreme, downbeat, hardcore industrial soundtrack onto a horrible Tom Hanks syrup-fest.

Carter Burwell's music for 'Fargo' is cool...have it on a CD with the 'Barton Fink' s.track. |
