You've surely noticed how in the past coupla years, MTV has really gone down the pan and become less and less about music...Jackass, Cribs, Osbournes, Wildboyz...apart from the few videos they show, the closest they usually get to music is 'making of the video' stuff, with inane chats with J-Lo or Christina about the deep meaning of their new T&A vid. Otherwise, it's business as usual, with shows about how much Justin Timberlake spends on hair cream.

MTV has been plummetting for more than just the last few years now. I mean, granted, when that TRL thing came around (circa 1998, I think) and they got rid of 120 Minutes (circa 2000), that's about the time that they became completely null and void, but they've always just been, for the most part, one big fucking advertisement, catering to the latest trends (and creating trends). Fuck, the marketing world and media and society in general moves so fast these days, I can't see how any single moment can be sacred or interesting in commerce cuz before they're always just moving forward towards... what? Mainstream entertainment is pretty cheap. Songs are manufactured, hit of the week, this is how it's been for a long time, formulaic crap that sells. MTV has always been a big promoter of this disposable bullshit. MTV - GET OFF THE AIR... NOW!

After the indie boom(strengthened by Nirvana's rise to fame) faded it slowly became less and less interested in 'alternative' music, and went back to formulaic pop. Whatever sells, I guess.

You should talk to Beck. He feels the same way you do. I prefer to side with the Dead Kennedys.

I remember during the indie boom there was a show called Indie Nation.

Jeanene Garafalo (sp?) hosted.

It was garbage. Played alot of Smoking Popes (I Need You Around?)

I watch the Jessica Simpson show sometimes.

I don't know if this is applicable, but these discussions always make me think of an old Genesis P-Orridge line..

MTV has 3 minutes of ads for every 7 minutes of "show". But their shows are basically advertisements with vague premises and intellectual (and physical) midgets. I don't even watch tv any more, fuck it.

MTV killed rock music.

MTV both sucks AND blows these days. I think they should change their name to Crap TV cause it is for sure NOT about music.

Wasn't this news about ten years ago?

VH1 Classic shows some cool stuff occasionally.

I just don't watch MTV. There's no reason to when I can just sit and listen to a good record or something. MTV's goal is money and it always will be which means their mostly going to show nothing but shit
