A friend of mine really likes the movie 7. I hate it and think it's one of the worst movies ever (though it's very well made). Once it made me wonder if we should be friends at all. Though they seem to be the same type of movie, I think the Silence of the Lambs is 100% different, far superior, and nothing at all like 7. The difference is the point of view of each movie. In 7, the idea is that people are awful and deserve whatever bad things happen to them. In SotL, the idea is that almost all people are essentially decent, even Lector.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Silence Of The Lambs, but it's definitely better than Seven.

the idea of seven isn't really that people are bad and deserve bad things....just that one psycho thinks so

Se7en is my preference, although I don't think it's above criticism...I still really like it, though.

Does 7 even look like a 'V'? Well, maybe if you rotated it a little bit. God is 7even. God is S7ven. God is Se7en. God is Sev7n. God is Seve7. What's the connection here? I've only seen parts of the movie; is there something I'm missing?

I like Seven but Silence is far superior. How's that for alliteration?

what's worse, go rent 8mm. What an atrocious movie; it was supposed to be the follow up to Se7en (that 7 always bothered me too) but they couldn't get Morgan Freeman so of course they got the shittiest actor ever (Nicholas Cage) who apparently was bored with acting while shooting it. It's laughably revolting.

This past fall there was that movie "In the Cut" with Meg Ryan and Mark Ruffalo- it looked like it would be good but it wasn't out long and I didn't get to see. I saw in an interview Mark said the movie was like Seven. It was on a lot of worst of 2003 lists but I'm still gonna see it on dvd. I just wanna see for myself. |

"8 mm" is a very bad movie, but Cage can be a really good actor (like in "Leaving Las Vegas")

Then of course there's "Kiss The Girls" and "Along Came A Spider", which DO star Morgan Freeman.

Nicholas Cage is not a bad actor. For instance, last Sunday I watched Gone In 60 Seconds and... no, wait, bad example. But he did a couple of great movies (Face Off, Windtalkers, Snake Eyes, Bringing Out The Dead, Kiss Of Death... I guess that's all).

Agreed on Raising Arizona - his casting in the role was sheer brilliance. Haven't seen Adaptation - he also does a bang-up job in "Wild at Heart", but he'd have to really suck for that character to flop.
Every other movie I remember seeing him in was an utterly crap Hollywood action/whatever movie, so I can't attest to his acting abilities in them. It wouldn't be fair. DeNiro can be a phenomenal actor, but you wouldn't guess it from his recent "film" choices...

Schulmacher's most recent film, Phone Booth, was entertaining. Nothing spectacular, but certainly worth watching once.

I enjoyed phone booth quite a bit....it's a really intelligently done version of the dumb Schumacher-style action flick, if that makes sense

I just finished watching Seven. This is the third time I've seen it, and I think it's a fantastic film. I did like Silence of the Lambs a lot, too, but only saw it once. I don't think the films are comparable, other than the fact that they are in the same genre, which is a vague term anyway. At this point, if I had to choose to watch one, I would pick Silence of the Lambs since I've only seen it once and have just watched Seven for the third time, but I think that I like Seven just a little bit more overall, seeings how I've watched it three times.

Seven is definitely better. Actually, I've never understood the fuss about Silence of the Lambs. And Kevin Spacey's a superior actor, far better than Anthony Hopkins. Well, at least in my humble opinion. |

phone booth was entertaining but, like you said, nothing special. I can't put my finger on it but it was like many other movies I have seen. It's actually much like speed even though he stays in the same place for the entire movie:) This was one movie that no director, not even schumacher, could screw up. It's just such a simple movie. So my enjoying this movie in no way changes my feelings toward JS.

I was just skimming through the early draft of the Seven script by Andrew Kevin Walker and was baffled by how different the ending of the script is compared to the later draft. In this version I was reading, John Doe kills Det. Mills in a church, Somerset avenges Mills by shooting Doe apart piece by piece and burns down the church with Doe in it. Tracy Mills is still alive and well at the end of the script. This ending certainly isn't as shocking as the re-written version (which still, there seem to be a lot of alternate versions and variations of), but I kinda dig reading where the movie originally went. This draft was dated sometime in 1992, so it was long before the script had been picked up by any studio. Does anyone else like this version of the ending at all?
