(I know this should be in the musicians section but more people will see it here. I'm sure you understand.)
IceCream and I were messing around with this before with the song "Hey". I've reluctantly been unable to much of anything the last week thanks to health issues (sorry, IceCream!) so so yeah. There's a lot of great talent on this forum as I'm sure everyone is aware of thanks to two great Tribute Albums.
Here's an idea I propose:
We each have our own skills. We also have our own weaknesses. For example: I couldn't write a good drum loop if my life depended on it, haha.
Since we have a surplus, or abundance, if you will, of talent we should take advantage of it and work together for writing and recording songs.
"Oh, but Nathan! We're so far away and oh my god oh my god oh my god!"
- It seems that most of us have high-speed internet and that we use the .wav format. I know that everyone here who has a digital recorder can put .wav tracks onto it and record with it. I'm sure those of you with analog can also find a way to make sure your recordings are in-sync with the previous person's.
- One of us can set up an FTP for pending song projects. We can have different folders for each one. Each time someone has an idea for a drumloop, a chord progression, a melody, a chorus, whatever...we can upload it to that and anyone who wants to download it and work with it can. That way we can end up getting several totally different sounding songs from one song project.
- Since we're all able to communicate through the forums we can all write lyrics together. We won't let anyone's (serious) idea get overseen. With the abstract skills of one member can come the catchy-hook skills of another. This way we can skulpt the song to everyone's liking. Also, since we all have incredibly different voices we can take advantage of that. We all play a variety of instruments...making the types of sounds we can use in a song virtually endless. I'm sure if someone is having trouble coming up with a certain sound effect (for example) that someone else could.
- There are many different unique characteristics that we can take advantage of and apply to a project like this. I think it can be a win-win situation for everybody. For instance:
Many solo artists on the forum who have been dying for a drum part for a song idea or a piano part can simply ask if they could post the main idea of the song on the FTP; if a drummer listens to it and likes the idea then that's taken care of. I think all of our songs could be 100% better with the influence of everyone else.
This is just an idea, and I know it could end up being quite epic...So if you think it sucks just shoot it down now. I totally respect that. Anyone else have any ideas for ways to do this? Post it here. We'll come up with something eventually.
Thanks, Nathan.

I think that is one very cool idea. I'd be willing to participate.

Neat idea...now just how to work it with all the different recording programs people use? =) |

Hmm...I'm not really sure if that would be a problem or not, to be honest. Most of them use .wav files as the main file type. Instead of saving the songs as a "(insert program here).project" or whatever, they could just save it as a .wav. easy as that.

Well, your problem is going to be synchornizing these tracks. What I would probably do is have one person (i.e. you or whoever does the base of the song) with a master multitrack. Then you give mixdown wav's to contributors or maybe keep an up-to-date mixdown on a server. They can record to the mixdown just as someone records to a click track. Then, they send you their recording (hopefully without bleed of any kind from the mixdown) and you add it to the mix and update your mixdown.
Of course, you'll run into problems with people doing soloing or melodies or even chording that clashes, and you'll have difficulties if you don't already have a clear vision of what you're going to do, but I think it's doable and that you'd be a good person to do it. It will be challenging, but that's the fun of it.
If you want it to be totally collaborative, you might want to start a thread to define a vision for it before you get into recording and so forth. Maybe pick a topic or a premise for the song and get into piecing together lyrics. That'll give you an idea of where the song needs to go musically and what sort of song you're going for once that's solidified. And you can discuss this with your contributors and start assiging people to good ideas, and get to that all-critical base. Just my thoughts on it.

This isn't just for me, silly, hahaha. It's for everyone involved. But yes, you're right. The person with the main idea for a song should record a time-correct version. That way we know if there's a solo or not, we know what the chords sound like, etc. We won't need lyrics in that, of course, haha.

Man oh man, this should prove to be a logistical nightmare!! Though, I admire your verve. Be sure to post all the progress as it should be an entertaining read.

Sorry Nathan, was confusing this with something else I read a bit I think. Yeah, doing an already done song (Hey) will be a lot easier (but still with many of the same problems) than trying to write one collaboratively. I wish 'ya luck. And peace. And I hope its proportions are as epical as you plan them to be.
