So we were talking about the list and apparently I'm not the only psychopath that creates lists of movies/books/other elements of culture to see or take in. I thought it might be interesting to make a master list of books, movies, and maybe even TV shows that are worth checking out (since the amount of crap on TV stifles anything good to the point that I suspect many of us just don't bother). We'll leave music out of this since there are already plenty of threads related to that, though if you guys would like to append albums to the list, we can.
But you can't just name a movie/book/TV show, you have to justify it and someone else has to second the nomination.
Once something has been nominated and seconded, I'll throw it on the master list here:
BOOKS The Dark Stuff (Nick Kent) A Confederacy of Dunces (John Kennedy Toole) Barney's Version (Mordecai Richeler) Dune
MOVIES Donnie Darko Amelie The Trials of Henry Kissinger Waking Life Taxi Driver Stand By Me The Big Lebowski
TV SHOWS Brass Eye The Simpsons The Office Alan Partridge

To get things started, I'll nominate this book:
Barney's Version (Mordecai Richeler) - A really well done fictional autobiography that feels so real you WILL look to confirm that it is in fact fiction, right down to corrections in the footnotes. The characters are painstakingly drawn, full of life, and wonderfully sardonic. It's humourous and poignant at the same time, and has won all sorts of critical accolades. Check out amazon.com for more on the book and some other reviews: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0671028464/104-4914959-5952760?v=glance

oh yeah. good point, I should probably explain. The Davinci Code: I dont normally get into these intrigue/suspense thriller pulp type novels, and got talked into reading this one, but it really sucks you in. I especially found the art history aspect of it fascinating. The Dark Stuff: This is a collection of Nick Kent's interviews with some of rock music's more eccentric geniuses--Syd Barrett, Keith Richards, Brian Wilson...pretty interesting shit.

This is a glorified best-of list, why don't we make a list of our lists of stuff we've been meaning to consume?

TV Show: Marion & Geoff. I've talked about this in the David Brent thread, but its the saddest comedy you've ever seen. Every time you see it, you end going 'aah', in empathy, surprise and a bunch of other emotions. Someone's got to second this... Book: The Commitments by Roddy Doyle. This is absolute genius, written in Irish vernacular with great onomatopeiaic songs. Movie: Blues Brothers. Apparently there are people out there who haven't seen this. Beats me why. This is a true cult classic.

Book: A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. It was written in 1966, and it's still one of the funniest things I've ever read. Plus, it's about to be made into a movie w/Will Ferrell as Ignatius J. Reilly. Oh, and it won Toole a posthumous Pulitzer, so that orter be good enough fer ye.

I second "A Confederacy Of Dunces". Absolutely hilarious. Didn't Toole kill himself out of frustration, knowing the book was brilliant but not commercially successful? |

TV Show: Brass Eye. "The twisted brain wrong of a one-off man mental". A superb satire focusing on the lack of attention paid to content by the media. It makes me laugh. |

The Deer Hunter - (1977-1978), Robert Dinero, Christopher Walken, Meryl STreep... very awesome movie. it hit's hard so be prepared.
Music:
Ween - most here probably knwo them, very good if you give them a chance. it's a cult band.
the Thorns - a new band from Matthew Sweet, nice rockin' sound.

Surely I don't have to justify the following shows being nominated:
The Simpsons - Longest running series ever for good reason. Pokes fun at any and all institutions, society, and that guy from Miracle on 54th St.
Seinfeld - The first sitcom to be about everyday life and pure genius
Family Guy - Possibly the most hilarious show ever if you have even an inkling of a sense of humour and an appreciation for the ludicrous.
The Office - Smartly written, brilliantly acted, the best thing to come out of the UK since fish & chips and the euphemism 'Sneaky Butcher'.

I've never really watched Seinfeld, because it always seemed annoying...but the others I can agree on, although I've only seen a few eps. of Family Guy...I though it seemed like too much of a Simpsons rip-off, but I was suprized at how funny it was. |

Curb Your Enthusiasm - If you like Seinfeld, you'll love CYE. Larry David, co-creator of Seinfeld plays himself...it's fantastic.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is great in concept and well done, or was for the first two episodes you watch. But the formula's always the same. Always. It got old for me really fast.

Film: The Trial of Henry Kissenger... why?? Because it is a well put together documentry highlighting the crimes against humanity that Kissenger was responsible for undertaking during the 60's and 70's. A great documentry that uncovers many negative aspects of the US Government.
Book: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown. The best book to read if you are interested in reading about the Native American Indians and their struggle for survival in 1800's.

I see your "Amelie", and raise you one "Waking Life".
Both movies are poignant and excite the mind - "Amelie" is a beautiful puzzle of human interaction and reenergizes the mundane like some serious magic. Come to think of it, so does "Waking Life". Both please!

Movies - I was debating this, and wondered if there was much point in putting classics such as Taxi Driver et al? Surely everyones een them, and if they have not, then they know what its about, and WHY they should see them? DOnt they?
True Romance - Tarantinos first script really. Directed by Tony Scott. A story you wish you were part of, with characters you wish you knew, or were.
Quadrophenia - Film made by the who depicting the conflict between Mods & Rockers on Brighton beach. Beautiful story lines invloved in a struggle for standing up for what you believe in. PLus the sound track rocks. hehe.

I agree with "Amelie" too. It was a couple of years ago that I saw it, but in my memory it was gratifying to watch because it expressed honest and deep appreciation for obscure details. I don't watch a lot of movies, so it may be more common than I realize, but I was quite impressed with the subtlety at play in that one. Also, since it was just brought up, last month I watched "Taxi Driver" for the first time in about 2000 days, and while I think de Niro's kind of a tool, that movie had me literally shaking with emotion (rage?) at times. It absolutely convinced me that I will never be able to live in isolation because I'll think of nothing but what's wrong with the world. Whether it's true or not, that's what the film did for me that night.
For books, if I can tentatively second "Barney's Version," count me in. Richler was brilliant, and though I haven't read it yet, I got a peek at about six pages from the girl next to me on the bus a couple weeks ago and just that got me fully hooked....one of these months I guarantee I'll read it and would wager two, nej, three fingers that I'll love it, but right now I'm reading "Obasan" by Joy Kogawa, another Canadian writer. Any book that can bring (anonymous quasi-patriot who lives up the block) to say he's "ashamed to be Canadian," is incredible for that reason alone. It's about the internment and dispersal of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War, which one could easily read about elsewhere, but this author's style is too appealing for any other book on the topic to have the same effect for me. She experienced it firsthand so it's extremely emotional, and her ability to string words together enchants me. I think she got her start as a poet, and this book makes me really want to delve deeper into her work.
At risk of rambling or treading into pretentious waters, I will stop now...

Waking Life is great, tho make sure you're very away and in sponge mode, it can be very challenging, all the cool shit they discuss. =)
Glad people seem to agree on Donnie Darko!
CYE is kinda funny, but i totally agree that it gets really predictable..and thus not funny (for me, anyway.) |

Fave movie: The big Lebowski
I think their's a link between this beautiful, hilarious and strange movie and The Confederacy of Dunces or Dreaming of Babylon (R. Brautigan).
I have seen it almost ten times (in french or in american) and I always love it.
