Years ago, a friend got a video of this old US kids show, 'Gumby'..we found it absolutely hilarious. We later found out he is something of a cultural icon, referenced here and there...he pops up in comedy classic 'This Is Spinal Tap' and was glimpsed briefly in an old coke commercial...how strange! |

I always thought a gumby was a trad metal throwback, with the denim jacket and mullet. I may be wrong.

I always though Gumby looked like a sexual device or an eraser. Never could decide which. Gave me a weird complex about erasers, though.
I looked for a cult to join, then decided to just play "Sink". Hey! I sank WallaWalla Washington! |

What Gumby? The clay animation one? Carolyn's post in this thread is the only one I understood.

I saw a guy getting out of his car, and his plate said "GUMBY." Of course I had to ask about it; he kinda looked at the ground and sheepishly admitted that his wife's car has a "POKEY" plate.

Have ya'll heard of "Davey & Goliath"? Art Clokey, the fella who did the Gumby stuff, did this show as well. It was backed by the Lutheran Church from 1956 to 1973, and it's all moral/religious. Whoa. The dog talks. Kinda weird. I heard they started making new episodes a couple years ago. |

Didn't they spoof it in a commercial recently where the dad drinks all their pop or something?
I have seen it. it's creepy sweet.

The Simpsons spoofed them too.
The pop commercial (cool, someone says pop!) was Mountain Dew, I think. "We got hosed, Davey."

I heard they did a limited edition porno anime displaying Gumby's spanking fetish before the creator got religion. Here's one of the animation cells...

I just think the look in Gumby's eye is so demented in that picture. And Davey looks so damned proud of the whole thing! How vile.

"Pokey in Barbados" is a very cumbersome phrase. I guess I can see why it didn't catch on anywhere else.

He's not known over here...in one scene in Spinal Tap, Nigel Tufnel has a bendy toy Gumby in his shirt pocket...and he's mentioned again by the 'Tap someplace. |

Never mind the Pixies DVD, I want one of Gumby. It could include all the episodes, Gumby live at the Filmore East, backstage footage of Gumby and Pokey plus biographies/filmographies. |

I am. Perhaps Jo can do something about this....it's an absolute outrage that the Pixies are getting their own DVD, while poor old Gumby is all but forgotten! |
