Today's random song of the day is Man of Steel.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
Under the stars each night,
I wonder do stairs go there?
I'm lonely driving behind the wheel,
Can't get no where.
I can't seem to get it right.
I'm only just a man of steel.

Is there a place?

And under the stars tonight,
I wonder if someone cares.
I'm lonely, that's the way I feel
Can't feel no stairs.
I've gotten a real ad-heist
I'm only just a man of steel.

There is a place.

I think that this one sets the record as the song I've listened to most on repeat. One time I just listened to it again and again on the drive home from the lake (for 1.5). There's just way too much cool stuff in this song. And I need to get out more.

Oh yeah, this needs to be brought back live, though I don't know if it could be as good.

A strange, intriguing song, as powerful as 'Massif Centrale' IMO. The music fits very well with the lyrics (and vice-versa).

Epic, mysterious song. I love the outro and the guitar part in the intro going from 3/4 to 4/4.

"I've gotten a real ad-heist
I'm only just a man of steel."

What's an "ad-heist"? Is that a little wordplay between heist, steel, and steal?

Maybe it's a weird pronunciation of atheist: at heist.

The Man of Steel could be an atheist. Questioning the existence of God and heaven -- Is there a place?

Owen - I like that! There was a lot of discussion about this before (damned search function still dysfunctional), but that is yet another wrinkle in the lyrics to consider.

This song is beautiful and powerful at the same time. I'll never forget seeing FB live for the first time, they opened with this tune. I was fucking moved; I still get chills thinking about it.

One of my top 5 favorite songs. Heard this song for the first time in 8th grade on the x-files soundtrack. kind of liked it then and made note of frank black, but never really inquired more than that. Now a senior in college and all about fb and the c's, its one of my favorites. I make sure to it multiple times before cross country meets. The opening guitar is so badass and the first minute rocks, then it goes into the lyrics, which are awesome. and then the final half of the song ("there is a place") gives you chills. unbelievable song, should be put on a major album. anyways, anyone know where i can get oddballs?

Have the lyrics to this song ever been officially printed? Cuz the above might just be someone's interpretation and not the actual lyrics straight from the source. Lemme know if I'm wrong, though. I've always heard that "ad-heist" line as "I got me a real appetite".

This song makes me think of a trucker.

This song has always chilled me and moved me. I'm a bit unsure about the reference to driving behind the wheel, and the 'ad heist' bit, but I have a theory. Could this be a song about the lonliness of Superman, the Man of Steel himself? Stuck on Earth, solitary, hiding behind a false identity (ad heist? False or stolen advertisement of someone who is not as they appear?)...a figure who no matter how depended upon is an outsider who will never fit in because he is different...driving behind a wheel of protection and saviorism he was forced to uphold? Maybe I'm way off, but think about how sad Kal 'El (Superman) must be each and every moment of his life when he looks to the stars toward his home that no longer exists...the last of his race...uprooted with no living lineage. This is the inner emotions of pain and suffering of a Man of Steel.

Catchin' blue in his eyes that were brown

I love this beatiful song. I honestly didn't think much of it when I first heard it, but it grew on me greatly.

I interpret the lyrics as those of a lovelorn wanderer, with more questions than answers. He keep his true thoughts and emotions bottled up inside, maybe for the sake of others, but his penultimate question is "Is there a place?" Whether that be a place in this world for him, or a place in the thereafter, is open to interpretation...

At the end of the song, this question is answered for him. It's actually a very uplifting song, I like to think.

"Ad heist?" "Ant height?" Babies, it's time to clean out that ear wax and put on yer headphones; the man is clearly singing:

I can't feel no stairs (or "stares"--an argument could be made for it)
I got me a REEL AND KITE
I'm only just a man of steel. . .

Wow. hahahahaha! If that is true, mereubu, my first post here looks even sillier.

Oh well, anyhoo, if anyone wants to see the crazy stuff that was talked about the last time this topic came up, I finally found the durned thread:

http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=1237&whichpage=4

edit: I just listened again, over and over and over, and though admittedly, I have had ringing in my ears for over 6 months now, there is definitely an "s" in the 3rd syllable of the phrase in question. Either that, or I'm moving the appointment for my brain MRI up to this week. (just kidding )
