Today's random song of the day is You're Such A Wire.
What do you think of it?
lyrics Why do you hate me? Why don''t you just simmer down? You could be doing great things Instead of just pushing me around Or maybe just be sleeping Even you at times must get tired
You''re such a wire You''re such a wire Look at you You''re such a wire
Look at you Packing it Blasting it You''re such a wire
The world it looks so big But it feels so small I''m snapping like a twig In this dried up, dying fall I think the winter is going to be a real whirligig
Why do I hate you? That''s because I am full of it If all your dreams came true Then you must be completely full of it You won''t catch me weeping ''Cause you know that I''m not a crier
I''m such a wire I''m such a wire Look at me I''m such a wire
Look at me Packing it Blasting it I''m such a wire

I knew the day would come when the SOTD would be You're Such A Wire. I hate this song as much as I love every other Frank Black song, i.e. a lot. Weak lyrics, weak melody, weak singing, weak instrumentation. Making "full of it" rhyme with... "full of it" is ugly.

the full of it rhyme is weak but I tend to like this song was even the first fb song that I learned to play and I recorded it immediately, I was like 14

One of the blander, more timid entries by Mr. Black, perhaps more suited to patients recovering from surgery...

FB sounds kinda bored on this one, but I like the melody of it. OK tune, not great. |

Not my favorite FB song, but I still like it a lot. Especially the "..or maybe just be sleeping..." and "...you won't catch me weeping..." lines. |

This is one of my FB favourites ! I like it, I also like "Can I Get a Witness" and "Punk Rock City" - songs which so many in this forum don't like. I always wonder why ? They are great songs.

I really like this song, for what it is. It's definitely a downtempo mood, very similar to "Can I Get a Witness", which I also like - I think those 2 songs are very close to roots country. It gives me the same feeling that old Willie Nelson and Hank Williams Sr. songs do. I have a hunch that 5 years down the road I will rediscover this song and love it.
The "full of it" rhyming could grate on my nerves, but knowing FB's penchant for brilliant lyricism, I take this more as a psychological twist than an attempt to write a pleasing rhyme. To me, it's a tongue-in-cheek jab where he's playing off of higher expectations, and while doing so, also making a statement about the ugliness and baseness the relationship has devolved into.
Valhalla - the numbers are not so terribly few, my husband and I both love "Punk Rock City". That makes at least 3 of us. ;)

Ok, that 5 years down the road thing just happened. Is anyone else missing time? I had to listen to the song after solidifying my observations, and I heard things I've never heard before. The surf-style steel guitar on the delay (I'm not a musician, so please don't rail at me if this is wrong :)) is supremely beautiful -I never paid any mind to it before. And this stanza is so complex - I usually just skimmed past it as well:
The world it looks so big But it feels so small I''m snapping like a twig In this dried up, dying fall I think the winter is going to be a real whirligig
This part just really blossomed for me.
I like this song oracle thingy!

this is a great song. sounds great on album and live. i like the start of the second verse, "the world looks so big, but it feels so small....". i liken the song to 'I dont want to hurt you' on COR. i happen to like both songs. probably in the minority with my opinion of both. |

I always thought of it is: you are such a "why'er"
like you ask "why" all the time...
which I thought was cool.
It always reminds me of "summer's almost gone" by the Doors for some odd, unkown reason... I guess the seasonal references |

this was my first favorite on Pistolero.. i think the writing is quite excellent actually. the vocal melodies are cool in the "world it looks so big.." stanza. and his singing voice on this song is unique.
short and sweet and beautiful; this is the Salma Hayek of Frank Black songs.. |

what Frank was aiming for with "I Don't Want to Hurt You", I think he more successfully achieves here.
And I actually like the "full of it" rhyme. The repetition makes thematic sense, to me.
Never thought of that "Why'r" thing before. I like it! |

I just listened to YSaW - for the first time for... a long time - and I must say I enjoyed it more than I expected. I guess my French ears weren't ready to enjoy 'country' songs at the time I bought Pistolero. Or maybe your posts simply made me change my opinion. |

That is a pretty cool idea, actually... the why're thing.

I really like this one...the lyrics mostly...I really dig the first verse. I think all the lyrics are brilliant. They're pretty simple, but still brilliant.

I cannot stand the background harmonies....that's the main problem with the whole album (which is why it's my least favorite catholics album). They just don't work!!! |

This and Western Star have always been my favorites off Pistolero.
I drive my wife crazy with this song as I always sing the first Verse when she gets mad at me. :)
Great lyrics and beautiful melody. Frank at his best.

The "packing it, blasting it" part is sung with such ease, but authoritative. It's cool. |

This song finished 131st (out of 157) in the 3rd Annual Australian Frank Black Countdown August 2003(this event involves ranking all songs in order, averaging each others rankings and counting them down backwards....add beer and it makes for a fun-filled day of FB) comprising all released FB songs from FB S/T to SMYT. We were probably a bit harsh on this track - im blaming my fellow countdown participant - he ranked it lower than me. |

I beg to differ with the why'er thing. My guess is that it started as "you're such a liar", but it was too mundane so he changed it...

I hate this song. Apl4eris, I think you shouldn't compare "Can I get a Witness" and "Punk Rock City". I hate PRC, whereas "Can I get a Witness" is one of my favorite unreleased tracks. Of course, these are just personal opinions, and we all agree on one fact : Charles Michael Kitteridge Thompson IV is a genius.
