Leno is officially the worst. I don't blame him though - as a stand up he used to be funny. But now, he has to write jokes that all of America thinks are funny - unlike Conan who has a much younger and hiper audience, so he doesn't have to pander to them with 10,000 Kobe Bryant jokes. As for Lettermen, the heart attack cut his funny off. Now he's just bitter. And Craig Killborn is alright, but i can't take the smarmy-ness for more than 15 minutes

Leno was hilarious before he hosted the Tonight Show. He was one of the best stand-up acts around. His appearances on Letterman are still memorable. "What's your beef, Jay?" |

If you get TRIO on cable, they've been playing all the old Letterman shows, though with the edits like the show previously mentioned with Bill Hicks, etc.. That Seinfeld interview was Class-A, all around. Lameo actually was funny (at times) on Letterman's old shows - but mostly due to the tension factor, and Letterman's ability to play that up. I have utmost respect for Letterman. He is the Samuel Clemens to the modern Jay Leno's Garfield (closest analogy in nature I could muster).
Oh yeah, and I effing love Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

LBF, I couldn't agree more with you here. I love Bill Hicks too, I figured someone was going to mention his terrific rant on this thread. Here's a partial transcript, since I happen to have "Rant in E-minor" stored on my Nomad Jukebox ( http://www.nomadworld.com/products/Jukebox3/ ) here at work...
quote: BILL: I'm kinda bummed cuz I'm missing right now, even as we speak, my favorite cultural train wreck "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."
[Audience Laughter]
BILL: I'm like a rubbernecker, man, every night it's like the crash of fuckin metal when that show starts. Me and my friends have a little office pool, wondering which episode and which guest is gonna be on the night Jay finally puts a 9MM in his mouth and blows his Doritos-shilling head off his fucking body.
[More Audience Laughter]
BILL: I think it's gonna be Joey Lawrence from the show "Blossom," ahhh...Other of my friends beg to differ and think Patrick Duffy a more likely culprit.
BILL (doing impression of Jay): "So, Hi everyone. Welcome to the show. Tonight we have Joey Lawrence...Hi Joey, how are you? It's good to see you again, boy it was always my comedic dream to be 44 years old and interviewing a little Tony Danza wanna-be every three months, boy, I'm fulfilled as a human, spiritually."
[Audience laughs]
BILL: (continuing Leno Impression): "So Joey, are you 16 now, you're 16 years old?"
BILL (doing Joey Lawrence): "Yeah..."
BILL (as Leno): "That's great, you're 16...you got a license? You driving, you driving?"
BILL (as Joey): "Yeah..."
BILL (as Leno): "That's great, you're 16, you got a license...you got a car? You got a car?"
BILL (as Joey): "Yeah..."
BILL (as Leno): "You got a girlfriend, hmmm? You dating somebody? Anybody special?"
BILL (as Joey): "Yeah...no...well, she thinks so, I don't. he he he he he!!"
BILL (as Leno): "Good God, what have I done with my life??" BOOM!
BILL: His brains splew out forming an NBC peacock on the wall...cuz, he's a company man to the bitter-fucking end!
[Audience laughs]
BILL (continuing): And it all started when he did the Doritos commercial. Here's the deal folks...you do a commercial and you're off the artistic roll-call. Forever. End of story. Ok? You're another corporate fuckin' shill, you're another whore at the capitalist gang-bang, and if you do a commercial, there's a price on your head and everything you say is suspect and every word that comes out of your mouth is like a turd falling into my drink.
Funny stuff! Bill Hicks will be sorely missed.

Hee. I love you Goddess! Jay Leno is just so obvious. I prefer the snarkier grumpier Letterman any day. And you can see he is not really such a crag deep down when he talks about his new baby. He's a softie, but he's smart. Unlike Leno who is just so cloying, IMHO.

No, no. Thank YOU, Goddess. IUMA's upload servers are down and I was in the middle of uploading two new tunes when I discovered this. In the process, I mistakenly removed all songs from that page (DOH!) When it's back up, I'll post a notice for feedback. Thx!

I can't explain why I like Leno. I think it's because he's so cheesy. I really like cheesy humor. I have a very open-ended humor policy. I'm very dark, dry and sarcastic myself, so I love that sorta humor (Curb Your Enthusiasm)...but I also dig obvious, cheesy humor, where the jokes are so bad I have to laugh. Bad in a charming way though, I don't know...I can't explain it. This is coming from a guy who proudly owns 2 class clown awards...I flaunt them.

The same people who watch the horribly banal Leno are the same people watching Murder She Wrote reruns. Leno is a whore. Come on, can you imagine Letterman or Johnny Carson doing professional WRESTLING??
Leno is a hack. He is to comedy what Garth Brooks is to music.
Kilby is OK. Floop couldnt be more wrong about the Ivy league stuff. He is from Minnesota and was a bench warmer on the Montana State (I believe) basketball team. Hardly a blue blood. The smarmy stuff is an act. Often funny. Weak writing though.
Conan is so herky-jerky when he interviews that he is tough to watch. Great writing on Conan, but, Letterman is the reigning King of Late Night. |

I"m with you Dallas. Leno has become a walking abortion, Kilborn's asshole schtick is all an act (pretty humorous, but alot of people take it seriously), and although Conan is the most humorous in my opinion his interviews really are incredibly awkward. I definitely think Letterman's gone downhill in the past few years though

I completely agree. I use to love Leno when he came on Late Night. I use to tape Late Night every night and watch when I came home from school (geek, I know), and I had a rough complilation tape of Leno's appearances on Late Night. So, it's hard for me to understand how terrible he has become.
However, Letterman (while still the King of late night) also isn't as good as he use to be. |

Heh... me too. I still have some of them on an audio tape.
One of my faves is his bit about 7-Eleven's coffee ad ("If it's not fresh, you get it free.") "What are they trying to do, save someone a trip to the dumpster? Will they throw in some stale donuts and curdled milk with that?"
"I had a nightmare flight on the AirBus. What is a bus anyway but a rolling bad neighborhood. What kind of people do you find on a bus? Escaped mental patients, court-martialled GIs, the indigent, the haunted..." |

Conan's herky-jerkiness has really grown on me and I've come to love it. The knowledge that he really is control of it allows me to not be shocked by it but welcome it as a comedic device.
I am especially fond of his recent predeliction for dissappearing, then reappearing right in front of the camera, as well as when he walks out of frame and the camera stays in place and then he walks back in from a different angle.
It takes time I am sure for a crew to anticipate and become part of the comedy like that and that's the beauty of the show.
Jay Leno in his quest to be on TV all the time and work on the weekends has turned into a brain dead sack of gray pudding. Stale...cliched jokes, bowing at the altar of the Lowest Common Denominator. Well, Hicks said it all didn't he...he did commercials and shilled for the company. He is a corporate whore and just takes up space feeding off the fact that what's not "broke" money and ratings wise will never be fixed.
Ellen Degeneres is really really really funny. |

Hah, loved the 'guy under the seats' bit with Chris Elliot. I really thought Elliot was genius back then. Also loved Chris Elliot's TV show where he lived over his parents garage. THAT needs to be on a DVD somewhere. |

Yes it's on DVD. You can buy it anywhere.
I realized much later on another reason I loved "Get A Life".
It seems that Bob Odenkirk was a writer for it. Mr. Show anyone? |

Yes Mr. Show. I got the David Cross DVD the other day, and while some people might not like it, I think it's fucking hilarious. It's worth it for the "squagels" bit alone.
But anyway, Conan does best Leno easily. That TRL guy had a late night show after conan for a while, and even that beat the hell out of leno. Sure, I only watched it once because Bob and David were plugging Mr. Show DVDs, but it seemed decent enough. |

I use to get Trio when I had Directv, but now that I'm using the Dish Network I get no Trio. I was actually a little disappointed in the old Late Nights that I saw on Trio. One they seemed to be the same ones over and over again, and I had a hard time understanding why they had chosen the ones they showed (they didn't seem to contain many remote segments). Or maybe my memories of the show exceeded the reality. I did catch some of the Regulator Guy, which was fun to see again. |

Remember Leno's Beyondo? I think it was meant to be so-bad-it's-funny...you could get a few chuckles out of him, sometimes...likewise Letterman and Conan. The Schwartzenegger thing on C.O.B was quite funny. |

I agree, they were showing the same episodes ad nauseum. But they seem to have expanded the rotation quite a bit lately. Mind you, I don't watch very often though. |

Talk show hosts feel obliged to be comedians...well, most of them started out as stand-ups. It's terrible when they put themselves before the guest and get all egotistical. |
