Just read this on Slashdot..
So the dude that played Chewbacca in Ep 4, 5 and 6 is going to be in 3.
But..
..his contract also stipulates he appears in 7, 8 and 9.
So the dorks can get ready to dress up, and the rest of us can get ready to be disappointed an additional 3 times. |

I hear ya. I was watching Ep# 2 the other night, caught the end on satellite. It was during Yoda rescue with the cloans. I couldn't help but notice again how bad the background looked against the acting. You know movies like The Wizard of Oz and you understand the background is just a painting because thats the best they could do back then. Come on Lucas. Anyway that just bothered me all over again. 27 years ago it was all about the acting. I know it was a groundbreaker in Special FX but the story made up for some of the mistakes there were.
The actor who played Chewbacca will probably be dead before Lucas does 3 more. Actually I'd rather they make movies on the 3 Han Solo (minus Ford) books and the 3 Bounty Hunter books. I loved those stories and they tied in nicely with Ep 4 and Ep 6 respectively.

I boycotted (or "Gumped" as my husband likes to say) all new "Star Wars" movies. I like my childhood mythos unadulterated by Jar Jars and N'Syncs and the other BS, fuck you very much, Lucas.

The prequels are crud...Peter Mayhew, that's the Chewie actor's name...contracted to appear in 7,8 and 9...? George Lucas stated he would DEFINETLY not make any more movies, or allow other directors to mess with his 'baby'.

I particularly liked Ep. 1, though I didn't mind 2 it certainly wasn't up to standards. People are always harsh on classics re-visited and while I do agree that Jar-Jar annoys me and that I don't have the same sentimental attachment as I do to the original trilogy, I also have to remember I'm no longer a kid...
Anyway, I just wanted to say I've enjoyed them up until this point even if I do agree that Lucas hasn't quite stepped up to the plate as he did in the first three. I'm still looking forward to three and would be quite happy to see the final trilogy completed as well.
And yeah, the Han Solo trilogy would be awesome in movies, or the Thrawn trilogy for that matter, though Thrawn himself would be difficult to pull off cinematically. I sort of hope that Lucas is more free with the rights to his universe at least posthumously because I think there are a lot of cool concepts to be explored if we can get over trying to sell it to babies.

Yeah, there is that nostalgia thing with the originals...you prefared 1 to 2? Most people think the other way 'round...actually, I think people hyped up the 'improvement over Ep.1' thing...I agree with the general consensus that 2 was better, but I think a lot of movies compared with 'Menace' fare pretty well, no?

With you on this one apl. I have a golden childhood memory of queueing for hours to see Star Wars in 1977. Average age of the cinema audience - 10.5. It dominated playground chit chat for weeks and weeks.
The Star Wars vehicle has been in a steady decline ever since.

ep1 is fuckin TERRIBLE. i wouldn't have liked jar jar as a kid, and i think any kid who does is allowed to watch too many terrible nickelodeon cartoons. (ie, any of them other than Zim, which of course is gone.)
ep2 is better but that's like saying "mouse shit is more pleasant than dog shit, because it doesn't stink as much."
basically lucas is inept, and probably the only reason ep 4 was any good is because other minds were there and actually allowed to offer input. we all know why ep 5 was the best.. |

Ep 1 was decent -- a little worse than ROTJ, but nothing to complain about too much. Ep 2 was just horrendous. It was a huge letdown. How do you screw up (I'm goin' fightin' in) The Clone Wars?
I think the badass Yoda scene could go down as the worst scene in the history of cinema. I'm seriously considering not even watching the 3rd one. And this comes from someone who owned 95% of the action figures and read most of those books y'all're talking about. |

Episode 1 was the fucking worst piece of shit to ever grace the SW legacy. The acting was TERRIBLE by everyone regardless of how well they act in other movies...it was fucking terrible. Gah. I can't even think about that movie. Who knows how #3 is gonna be. Probably more Lucas CGI wanking...look at me! I have a computer! To think there might be 3 more episodes...that would make it much more possible that there will be more shitty SW movies than good ones. AGGGGGGGH.
If you don't think that Lucas is overrated, here's your challenge. Check the credits for Episodes 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. We all know 5 is the best. Check and see who wrote and directed them.

The originals obviously blow the 'menace' and 'clones' movies out of the water. I'm scared of seeing EP 3, but I will see it anyway.
What REALLY bothers me is that Yoda is computer generated in the new ones. It makes him seem so fake. Sure, some stuff looks fake in the older ones, but it doesn't make sense that Yoda looks/and IS fake in the NEW ones. Lucas, you bitch: Get a real actor to play Yoda.

Yeh, see if you can get the same actor who played him in the originals. The green skin, the wispy hair... he was just so perfect for the role.

Isn't the original actor dead? I imagine it would be hard to find someone to play Yoda, because how many people have green, wrinkly skin, big sideways-Spock-ears, and a raspy voice?
Last time I checked there is such thing as makeup artists and they could easily replicate Yoda's face on some little boy. It would look better than computer animated crap.

Yoda was a puppet in "The Phantom Menace," and they sure as hell didn't get that right. But, he was completely CGI in "Attack of the Clones." He still didn't look like a younger version of the Yoda we all know and love, but he still was a step up over the puppet.
Whatever they did to make the original Yoda in the original trilogy, they should just do again. (I would imagine that he was some sort of advanced Jim Henson puppetry.)

I can't find much good in Episodes 1 or 2, except for the lightsaber battle in Episode 1, which was absolutely incredible. The acting in 1 and 2 is lousy, the stories aren't nearly as engaging, the CGI effects are WAY overdone; I can't stand how the actors don't seem to match up with the settings they are in, and there is too much going on in the frames. The space battles aren't nearly as cool; once again, too much going on. None of the aliens seem as cool since they are CGI, there's just something about the movement and the shadows and the way light hits CGI created characters that makes it obvious that they aren't real. The overall mood of the movies isn't as magical, either. It's a real shame. If I had to choose between wondering what the story of Anakin Skywalker and the Old Republic was and seeings they awful films that reveal all that information, I'd choose to wonder. My imagination has been making better Star Wars films than these since I was a child.

Of course Yoda was a puppet.. heh heh. I was just teasing that he was an actor.
Actually I didn't know that. Though I haven't watched the original Star Wars in a couples years so my memory seems to tell me Yoda looked freaking real in the originals. I still think it looks better than computer. At least a puppet actually exists and is made up of atoms.

I don't know for a fact that Jim Henson's company had anything to do with Yoda, but I know that Frank Oz, who did the voice of Yoda, also did the voices of some of the Muppets. Plus, Jim Henson did do some more mature work besides Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock -- he also did the Dark Crystal. The puppets in that movie were amazing. It's rare that you see pupeteering look that impressive, but it can. Sadly, like 2D cartoons and everything else, it seems to have been ousted by more contemporary special effects.

Itch, are you serious?
While we're on the note of Star Wars, for those of you who enjoy gaming (PC or XBox), I recommend you check out Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a roleplaying game by Bioware. It's fan-fucking-tastic...if you even remotely like RPGs and enjoy Star Wars, you'll love this game. It's a lot of fun. I've logged in nearly 15 hours of game time or something like that.

The new Star Wars trilogy has been a major disappointment thus far. I love the originals, grew up watching them and being obsessed with them as a child. It seemed obvious that the new ones wouldn't be as good as the old, but at the VERY LEAST I wish we could have gotten a decent movie out of it. Nothing magical, just two hours of entertainment that was worth the $7.50 ticket price. Instead, like everyone seems to agree, we got horrible acting, dull plots, too many special effects, and generally bad movies. They each had a few good moments here and there, but overall these are real stinkburgers. But maaaaaybe Episode III will be ok. If it improves as much as EpII did over EpI, it might be worth a rental.
Oh yeah...R2 is supposed to be entirely CG in this one. Seriously. |

I don't see why they would need to make R2D2 CGI; he looked perfect in the original trilogy, for fucks sake!
Do most of you guys who think there was too much CGI in the new Star Wars movies think also there was too much in the LOTR trilogy? Just curious. I know alot of people who hate movies like the Matrix, Star Wars, etc., because of the heavy special effects respected the LOTR movies alot more than the aforementioned...they were pretty heavy on the CGI too.
As for George Lucas...I really don't like him. There is no artistic vision left in that man, just a driving force for more marketing and commercialism. I think that he stumbled upon the magic and charisma of the original three (excluding Empire Strikes Back, of course) totally by accident.

I think Lord of the Rings did pretty good with CGI. Plus the CGI didn't dominate or tell the story. The cast/acting, music, and overall enjoyment factor was excellent (much better than Star Wars 1-3 was in those fields).

There was one scene in Return of the King I didn't like at all...it was the part where Legolas tackled that elephant creature and took it down all by himself. Then at the end he slid down the trunk on a shield like he was surfing. I thought that was a bit cheesy and over the top. But that's one of the rare instances I can recall in those films that I didn't like.

George Lucas is a jackass. He writes the absolute worst dialogue ever. The actors can't do anything with it. Fuck him for being such a douche.
The Clone Wars cartoon on Cartoon Network has been pretty good, but that is because it is being written and directed by the team behind Samurai Jack. So fuck the movies and just watch the cartoon. |

That movie really advertises S.W, with Elliot showing E.T. his figures-'...and this is Greedo...' The guy who plays Eliott-Henry something-is in Gangs Of New York as DiCaprio's friend.
